A myth that's true!

It may have changed now, but the last time I took a sti import to a subaru maindealer( just before the new year) in derby, they wouldnt even entertain anything in the form of help and advice!
But I do find speaking directly to the mechanics instead of going in the front door, you seem to get a bit more in the way of help.

You are best off taking an import scooby to a specialists.

But like I said, this is just my personal opinion.

lol.... I've got to disagree with you there mate! I can actually hear my passengers in the Evo, where there's no chance in the Scoob

Also, the legroom in the Evo is massively more accomodating in the rear of the Evo, where you have to almost be an amputee in the Scoob, although I must agree re the ride quality, but that might be down to my Ohlins on the Evo as opposed to the Eibachs on the Scoob.

Is your car a Euro import Shimy? I've had mine serviced at Beechdales in Derby twice this year with no problems.

But thats an interesting point there though... It may be different if its a Jap or euro import.

I am very pleased with the info given!

I test drove the fq 300 last year, but have never driven a subaru
Im hoping to go for a test in an sti, and another evo soon to gain my own opinions.
I remember being just as impressed with the brakes on the evo as i was with the power, 100mph to 0 in an instant! I have heard the standard subaru brakes are not up to much, this true? how they compare?

The current shape STI comes with a perfectly good set of Brembos, and although the pedal feels a mite squishy as standard that's nothing that a set of braided hoses doesn't fix.

If you really hammer them hard then you may want an upgrade, but there certainly don't seem to be half as many people wanting to change the new STI brakes as there used to be with earlier models.

I recently road tested Evo 260 and STi on the same day, I must admit I prefer the look of the Evo, but the suspension is just sooooo harsh, I didn't think i could live with it.

Hence, I now have an STi, and very happy, fast when i want it to be, will pootle with no fuss when i don't. It's the perfect compromise for me.

Best car i have ever owned, Evo VI, it had it all, Speed, handling and evil looking !! BUT
villians like to pinch em Its the ONLY car i ever got hassle with in Brum, and i'd owned
P1's, classic's STi 7/8's and never got any sh!te.

Currently got a STi 8 PPP with the ad on's(my seconded one) But my original statement
still stands.

Scoob is very common and the Evo very rare, got to be 10 Scoobs for every Evo or higher !!!!

There is an article comparing the Evo FQ320 with the STi PPP in the latest Test Drive Magazine.

Conclusion was: Evo slightly more capable esp at higher speeds, Scooby much nicer to live with as a daily car and has more character. Both great in their own way.

Not an original verdict, but accurate IMHO.

I've had both. Firstly WRX PPP 03 for a year, then Evo 7 FQ 300 for 6 months and now in an 03 STi.

Subaru - Very refined, far superior build quality, excellent on motorways, superb on A and B roads, servicing every 10,000 miles, or 7500 for a classic Scoob, superb handling in all weathers, steering not as direct as Evo, superb climate control.Comfortable.

Evo - Full on rally experience every drive, you have to hold the steering wheel with both hands at all times, mentally noisy at high speeds, annoyingly small fuel tank, poor build quality (many 2-3 year old Evo's have rust under the bonnet, the seams are not treated with sealant) unacceptable on a car so new, notchy gearchange, crap heating and ventilation. (depending which system the car has), Recaro seats wear out very quickly, leaving a sheen on the side where you get in and out of the car!

Well I`ve had a MY03 STI standard (261bhp) and now have a MY04 MR-FQ320 (with 340 upgrade chip)

Performance/Power wise it wouldn`t be fair to compare the EVO would eat it. Power from the EVO comes in at just below 2,000rpm and comes in a massive surge all the way through. Unlike the STI which didn`t get excited unitil 3,500ish rpm. I know PPP irons this out a little but power still doesn`t come in as quick as the EVO`s.

Ride quality the EVO MR is better. I think this is because the EVO MR has Bilstein suspension. The original EVO has harder suspension. I also had Prodrive spring on my STI, to try and improve the ride and handling.

Handling EVO 1 STI 0 nuff said!!

Interior Nothing in it both nothing special but serve there purposes. Seats, well if you`ve got a large **** you wouldn`t have a chance in the EVO and there isn`t a height adjustment which I thinks poor.

Looks, well both look ace. I just got bored with WR Blue and Gold Wheels. When I looked at the EVO MR`s Gunmetal was the only colour for me.

I love the sound arguements - hardly a way to buy a car really...

I had a P1, now I have an Evo.

The Evo to me is everything the Subaru wasn't.

The arguement of running costs doesnt really stack up either. My P1 cost just as much to service over a year as the Evo does, fuel economy is no worse although you fill up more because it has a smaller tank (40 litres).

Well I have owned both, although mine sccob ownership was limited to the lesser models, i.e. MY97 Turbo 2000 and MY01 WRX. I did test drive a MY03 STi but settled for an EVO8 FQ300. My main rasons were:-

a) The styling of the Evo was more appealing to me, I hated the gold wheels and HUGE bonnet scoop.
b) The Evo felt much much quicker than the STi, although this was the 265bhp STi so not quite like for like.
c) The Scoob had become as common as muck, and I like to have something that bit different to me.

On a comarison basis:-

Engine responsiveness : Evo
Braking : Impreza (Evo brakes prone to warp)
Ride comfort
Short Journey A-Roads : Evo
Long Haul M-Way : Impreza
Handling : Evo
Styling : Evo

if this thread was put up 3 years ago the EVO would of been battered .i suppose we have all grown up a bit now and actually driven an EVO or know someone that has or jumped ship altogether like myself.nice to hear real opinions good or bad of both cars.

Which was true of the early cars, and I still managed to get the ~ same range out of my EVO as my STi

I loved my EVO V, maybe even more than my STi, it looked so mean, much more than the current EVO, but it cost a lot more to run, parts were so expensive (£300 for a starter !), servicing was ok, needed doing often but was not that expensive.

Handling was better than a standard pre DCCD-A with yaw sensor UK STi. No understeer yet still stable, however the STi seems to have more soul (odd I know).

Oh and the AC on my import EVO GSR beats my type UK system hands down. Like the artic in there.

I've got a MY00 U.K spec classic which is now standard again, but until recently had circa 270 brake, and an Evo 8 which until recently was standard with 280 brake but now has about 340. Considering that they're percieved to be broadly similar, it's an odd fact that I can't think of any real similarities, at least in terms of the driving experience. Difficult to make a comparison without appearing to run the Scoob down, and that's not the intention at all, as I still love it, but the Evo makes it feel blunt, and in need of more of everything.

In short, Evo steering is spectacularly more efficient at translating your commands, retrieval at the limit is so easy it makes you think you're a good driver, and the off boost torque makes it feel fast when you're not trying. The ride however, is dreadful, something passengers never fail to comment on.

I'll be gutted when the Scooby is sold though, despite its relative shortcomings.

gets me how a lot of people say scoobs are now very common, the escort, vectra, pugs, mondeo, astra, there common cars, arround here anyway.

As for both cars your talking about , make your own mind up. Some people will say this and others will say , i dont aggree with you on that .

At the end of the day Clarkson on top gear tested both cars as you might have seen and the outcome was " both great cars " and could'nt choose one over the other.

At the end of the day get what you want and dont listen to anyone
