Creosote in the fuel tank??

I thought these cars had lockable flaps??

Thats bad news and someone must have hated you a lot!

Still the other 2 Engines and 5 Gearboxes cannot be simply put down to bad luck??

I have owned my Impreza for 5 years+, treat it with respect, but play sometimes, not modified it at all (Subaru know best!) and it hasn't missed a beat in 59,000miles. It's even got the original brake pads and discs. Original exhaust, Turbo, Clutch, Engine and Gearbox ................. I am hopeful that I will pass 150,000miles with no trouble.

Now, I look after my cars and can drive properly ...... abusing my cars doesn't even enter my head - thats pathetic and childish IMO

bloody hell do you use a parachute and air brakes instead

With even moderate driving I would expect you to get through pads at 20k and disks at 40k

I use the gears generally to slow down, still no complaint from the gearbox

I rarely push the Engine over 3000RPM - at motorway speeds of 75-80MPH its nicely sitting just under 3000RPM.

I get around 28-36 MPG and use Sainsbury's Super at 85p.

The car is NEVER revved at all until about 10miles have past ..... if the Turbo has been spooled up I will allow it 5 minutes idling to cool.

Quite why people would want to abuse such a great car until it breaks, and then do it again, and again, and again, puzzles me somewhat??

personally- I use 105C/110C as a warning sign to ease off, as from here it rises very quickly.

IIRC, on 22b it was mentioned that 120C+ is where the danger factor comes in.

I prefer to play safe as I dont have a fortune stashed away for a spare engine just like that.

Thats just incredible. I rarely stay under 3k Turbo doesn't work properly till you get over 3k.

But, hey, if you manage to enjoy your car driving like.

Where does it say in the handbook, "Drive like a wally at all times!!" ????

It doesn't!! Take it over 3000RPM when you want to play .... but don't hold the thing there for more than you need!!

Why do people want to max out their cars on public roads? In my view, they're irresponsible if not actually missing a few screws. If I was thrashing my car to see how fast it would go and it went pop, I'd say to myself: "Whoops, you daft ****, you broke it." I would not say "These engines are ****." Scoobs are NOT aerodynamic and they have permanent all-wheel drive. This is not an ideal set up for attempting to exceed 160 mph.

How many extended 160mph rally stages are there in the world?

I'm certainly not afraid of having mine close to the redline when I drive it (unlike Pete) but it's brief, because I change gear. Let's use them for what they're designed for, eh?

hmmmm... so what are they designed for... an off roader maybe?
It sold as a performance car, and should be able to meet the manufacturers claims with out going pop.

What they definitely are NOT are motorway-munching limousines. They are meant for spirited B-road driving. And top speed means ONLY that; it does not mean suggested cruising speed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Subaru have never used top speed as a selling point in the way that Supercar manufacturers do.

I'd agree tieh krazy. If a BMW 2 litre can cruise all day at 130, then my scoobie should be able to as well. I have UK relaxed gearing, and more power. Should be able to do that.

If your car cannot hold its top speed for more than a few minutes, then there is something seriously wrong with it. All imo of course.

What a lot of people seem to be forgettingis that the car and indeed engine in question here, is a long way from a factory set-up, i agree that we should be able to mistreat factory spec motors with a degree of reliability, but as soon as you go away from standard, then no-one should expect the same level of reliability....

Or am i missing something??

That's a sensible view.

Except you shouldn't expect to "abuse" or "mistreat" something and expect it not to fail. If what you mean is to drive it hard within manufacturer's tolerances, then I agree.

I'm just interested to know what mods you had on your car to assist with your 1.1 of boost?
I've got the ususals like:uprated petrol pump
uprated fuel filter
uprated fuel regulator
BIGGER turbo
550 injectors
Unequal headers/de catted
parallel fuel feed
Front mount intercooler+uprated radiator
All mapped on a GEMS ECU, I am around 1.32 BAR at the moment.

I'm just curious as there a couple of different lumps out there, did you get the USA STI lump. Keep us updated, as I would be like you, if it all goes bang again the car is getting stripped and I would go to the dark side and never buy a scoob again.
Sorry to hear your bad news, and good luck which ever route you take

Cheers Kevin.
I wouldnt worry too much. Mine has a 2.5 running 1.3 bar and not had any major problems with it at all, the odd mior one like blowing exhaust gaskets but the engine has never missed a beat. And im around 11,000 miles I think

imagine buy a 200 odd bhp 4wd car so that you can keep it under 3000 rpm and see how long you can make the brake pads and discs last for , i never heard such a wuss in all my life!

I am currently trying to save for a scoob so that from time to time i can enjoy the car the way it's meant to be enjoyed, ie driven reasonably hard from time to time, and testing the brakes rather than just using engine braking! (no chance of your brake light bulbs blowing!!!).
As for the issue of speeding, if a road is empty, and clear, whats the problem of redling in 2nd??? or 3rd??

And how the hell does your engine start with all the cobwebs in it??
