you just made my point exactly mate..
yes people/kids may have died in beach/sand hole related accidents years ago (and i am not 60-70 thank you !! 40 years ago indeed
)but did it have a brigade of H&S people stopping us doing it then? No, because the simple fact remained that accidents happen all the time and stopping people digging holes then or now, does not stop accidents happening full stop.
but well done on thinking that my "rose tinted" past has made me blinkered to reality ....sessssh

Are you whingers aware of the rules of gravity, that sand is not going to jump down his lungs suffocating him instantly
its foing to obey the rules of gravity and fall down around hid feet 1st

Kid suffocated when the hole she was in collapsed.
Not forgetting the wally who dug an 8ft hole and sat at the bottom in a deck chair. A Darwin winner no less:
I'm the first to whine and moan about the H&S codes, however in this case I think it's a good idea not to partake in an unnecessary risk like this.
Apologies if the above cases have been highlighted already as I haven't read the full thread.

Buxton, NC: A man died on a beach when an 8-foot-deep hole he had dug into the sand caved in as he sat inside it. Beachgoers said Daniel Jones, 21, dug the hole for fun, or protection from the wind, and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom of the hole Thursday afternoon when it collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach, on the outer banks, used their hands and shovels, trying to claw their way to Jones, a resident of Woodbridge, VA, but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him while about 200 people looked on. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital.

stuck a shovel in the boot and started a hole today after work, unfortunately due to the location i was forced to dig at ,around 5ft down I struck solid rock.Got the rest of the week off though so gonna get to the beach early tomorrow and pick a prime location. and when I'm finished digging the mo fo of all holes I am gonna leave some poisoned wooden spikes at the bottom, cover it with tarpaulin and sprinkle some sand over the top

At the end of the day sand still abides by the laws of gravity
Anyway rather die in a 6ft hole at 24 than in a ****/****e filled bed at 90
When I was a kid a lad on the beach had to be rescused by the Coastguard chopper after he fell into his sand hole head first (he was diggin it kneeling down, with a small spade) and it collapsed around him, suffocating him and half crushing the poor kid. I was only about seven at the time but I can still remember standing there staring helplessly as his mum went into hysterics waiting for help. Not pleasant at all.
Fair play on the council for being vigilant tbh, I wouldn't wish that on any kid.
Its all about vigilance though, if you and your little un want to dig a hole aslong as you are a responsible parent and keep an eye on it whats the problem? Its the folk leaving the kid unattended that need the slap here, not guys like the original author, imho.

Lol,sorry mate no flags on my car.
Alot of things are dangerous if you dont know what you are doing,i am an expert at beach digging,if you look at that hole it is about 6/7 ft across at the top and a ft or so wide at the bottom,it is at the top of the beach away from any water or moving sand and the sand there is sharp and very coarse, solid digging,we dug some steps down into it and when we filled it in none of the sides collapsed and we were jumping about trying to collapse it but it would'nt have it and look at the size of my mates.
Letting young children dig deep holes is not clever and i for one would not let my children do that or come near the hole,it is an adult only sport and you certainly dont want to be digging near the sea or in soft sand or rising tides.
Chill out and take care out there.
