In fact and rather sadly an old boy of 80 died when he fell out of a trolley and banged his head. Was reported going wheeeeee down the aisles. This is not a wind up btw. Source D. Telegraph.

Before I got married my workmates dressed me up and wheeled me around the town in a shopping trolley Not the most comfortable of things to sit in especially when they try to get you up and down the kerbs.

The bloke died happy then...

We all do, I know I'd rather go out on the ragged edge than be wrapped in cotton wool all my life.

Roadrunner makes a perfectly reasonable point, and how else could the bloke enforce the local law if the person concerned refuses to comply with his polite request except to call the police?

I don't agree with over the top H&S regulations either, but I think he had a point in this case. The danger is that people go away at the end of the afternoon and leave the hole unfilled in.

this thread has brought back so many good memories.
spent most of my youth living abroad and most of that time on the beach (well we lived 200n yards from one).
My dad used to dig the most almighty holes in the sand and when there was a big aprty of us, all the adults and kids used to dig huge holes that would have made a JCB proud we used to have steps in them, little holes to stash cold beers, everything but a bleeding bed !!

we used to dig holes, put people in them and then fill them up so it was up to their necks, bury people lying down and make comedy sand breasts for them , do the sand traps with the towel etc etc. never had any problems, no-one died or got buried alive and no-one bothered us. absolutely brilliant days..

This country on the other hand is run by H&S and fear of lawsuits and potential dangers..bit like that thread a while ago about how kids of the 70's are lucky to be alive today with all the "so called" dangers that we were faced with..pah !! today's kids are all cotton wooled....

oh i am nearer 40 than 30 and i still do the supermarket trolley thing.
My kids roll their eyes at me, but WTH its fun...and no-one is going to tell me off..just try it

not that i care what people do on the beach...but i think you'll find kids did die, even in 40 years ago in you rose tinted past. the fact you didnt die doesnt mean no one else did.

This bloke has no idea the danger he's in clearly. If that collapsed on him he would be suffocated and crushed to death, no question.

Went to the beach yesterday in South Wales, we dug quite a big hole and no one even battered an eyelid! I guess now is not the time to mention I also buried my 3 year old and my mtes 6 year old in the sand, just like I used to when I was a kid

I still do it all the time, at 39.

Costco trollies are the best, as they're huge mothers - and don't tip over backwards so easily

The other good supermarket 'trick' - even at 39 (or especially at 39) - is to go shopping with the other half (or a mate), and when they crouch down to select a product from the lower shelves in an isle I often just gently push them backwards by the shoulder and watch as they flail on their back on the floor. Always raises a laugh - from me at least.... but the Mrs is learning these days and I'm always warned beforehand!

Oh, and that stupid hole above is virtually suicidal. God knows how you dug it that deep WITHOUT it caving in and finishing you off... Would have been natural selection in this case I guess...

Absolutely. It sounds laughably melodramatic, but that bloke is lucky to be alive.
