Yep, they are quite slow (relativley). As the engine is about the same in the ST165 , 185 and 205 its quite easy to increase boost to the 250bhp of the 205 (my boost gauge goes off the clock in my 185 )
Beg to differ... the engine set ups from 165-185 and 205 are massively different.
Will struggle to get 250bhp out a 165 without major money spending, 185's really need a FMIC (and a diet) to get any decent power over 250bhp safely. ST205's have been known to be as high as 260bhp out the box, easy for 300bhp with minimal fuss or money.
If you want a cheap 4x4 turbo the 165 is bags of fun

Get a Cavalier Turbo

Very tunable, tons of spares, and lots of toys.

Just make sure that the transfer box is fit for purpose, as it's the weak link in the car. But the potential for tuning is very good, and if you de-badge it, it could become a proper sleeper.

Also a rare beast it the Serria 4x4 V6 Turbo Technic's (correct me guys if this is wrong). I've seen these go for about a grand and they are reportedly running about 240-250bhp.

I'm sure you can get Evo 1's for that price too. But if it's just a run about you are after, I've heard good stories for the little Starlet Turbo's. But I am not sure if these are 4x4's.

I've had a GT4 165

theyre so much fun to drive ... true they aint that quick but with a tweak here and there you'll have em running mid 6s i'd say!

as for the grip ... well throw them round any corner and more or less any speed .. get a bit of 4 wheel drift and look cool into the bargin!

if i was up for a cheap fun car .. i'd def buy another one!

You probably know a lot more than me. I thought that all the 3S-GTE blocks and cranks were basically the same and you can up the boost quite safely without over stressing them. Like the 4A-GE engine, they seem very overbuilt.
The engine seems to run so far away from det too that increased boost is safer than in a EJ20.

The 185's air to air TMIC is a lot less efficient than the 165/205 air/water setup but I dont seem to suffer any problems with my increased boost.

The only real problem Ive got is that quickfit don't do an exhaust and the cheapest system I can find is the Fensport one.

You can get a mongoose/blueflame full system zorst on ebay for under £300 for a ST185.
Lots of differences on the ST205 over the 2 previous versions, Intercooler is larger and more efficient, bigger CT20 turbo, no TVIS, better mapped ecu so can run 1.1 bar safely with no mods etc etc.
13-14psi would be max boost on a 185 without investing in a FMIC/downpipe etc.

Must admit i was going to say Saff Cos or Pulsar, but then saw you only want to spend a grand, think you might have to set your sights a tad a lower.

Congratulations on that huge logical leap. To be fair, I had worked that one out for myself. The title of the thread is:

cheapest 4x4 2l turbo

So thats what we will be discussing. If you are upset that the thread has been resurrected without the original premise then may I respectfully suggest that is your problem. Many thanks however for the massive insight you bring with your post.

I wouldn't touch any performance car under £1000 with a barge pole - let alone one with 4x4 and a turbo, too many things waiting to blow up or break and none cheap to fix.
