Most other laws covering, murder, rape, burglary etc etc involve a victim. Where is the victim when somebody exceeds the speed limit? Is there necessarily one?

Seems to have the mental age of a three year old brought up by a single parent on a council estate.

Strangley enough, sensible organisations like the AA agree with you:

Mary Williams OBE, the chief executive of road safety charity Brake, said: "The proposal to raise the limit on motorways is irresponsible and flies in the face of road safety advice and convincing evidence from the USA and elsewhere that raising limits increases casualties.
What utter bollox. Why are these people allowed to lie in public in this way? Can't they be prosecuted or something?

I honestly am disgusted at people that come out with ridiculous statements about speed on motorways - if the current 70mph limit works so well, why do 99% of motorway users travel at over 80mph in good conditions (including coppers). Its because its perfectly safe to travel at that speed in todays cars.

Whenever I travel on motorways now, even just doing 75-80mph, I spend all my time looking for scameras and cop cars, when I should really be concentrating on driving.

What we need to do is educate people to use motorways properly, pull in when they have overtaken, be alert and drive based on road conditions and traffic.

As long as people continue to try and measure safety in MPH we are going to have a problem. There are a huge number of factors that affect safety, the actual physical speed you are travelling at at any given time is only one element it it is not the same for all vehicles and drivers.

It's time for:
1) Better driver training, including separate motorway test
2) Encouragement (lower insurance etc) for drivers to seek ongoing and additional training (IAM etc)
3) More police on the roads using discression and focusing on bad / dangerous driving.
4) Variable speed ranges for roads

Fair point, but if I'm on a stretch of motorway on my own with no other vehicles around, in clear weather, doing 150mph I can only injure myself if any of the other factors come in to play.

I agree on your main points though.
