No show on my copy, no surprises there, I did not think it would be sent via Courier hence sent it to the house.

Well all is not lost as a copy arrived at work . . . so 1 ISO later we are in business. Hopefully my copy will arrive on Tuesday !

Spotlight is the killer app for me, and the Mini is the first victim or lucky candidate depending on your point of view

Yeah saw spolight running mid week and it looks the business. Tiger seems more memory hungry than Panther though.

Along with the new version of Adobe Creative Suite , Tiger looks very impressive. Just waiting for my own copy.

Oh and yes if anyone is serious about switching then they should contact me as I may be able to come up with a very attractive proposition.

Some good news
Apple finally decided that it would put the release version of 10.4 up on ADC for download, so I grabbed a copy this morning and it's now up and running on the iBook. Looks rather nice, seems a bit quicker than Panther I must say.

Acid test will come on monday when I update my desktop machine, then we'll see how good it really is

Anyone had any issues yet? I did the upgrade - clean install in the morning.

For a start, the Airport software won't recognise the base station. I can DHCP an address off of my DHCP server via the Airport and use it fine, I can also see the Airports MAC address in the servers ARP table. Also, sometimes when I hit apple-n in Terminal, which I use most of the time, occasionally it'll fire up a new terminal for it to disappear straight away. Apps in the Applications folder now have .app extensions. I'm seeing these things on both the Cube and PowerBook, both were upgrades.

Try holding down the control-command and D keys as you move around a Safari web page.

Steve,
Have you run Disk Utility -> Repair Permissions? If not, give it a shot. I did a clean install and everything did seem to run ok, did copy over my existing settings from another partition too.

Repair permissions on my machine did pick up a few things wrong, and I've seen in the past that it can cause odd things to happen.

I'm now trying to work out what other benefits Tiger gives me lol

is it possible to do just an upgrade from 10.3.9 to tiger or do you have to buy the complete o/s?
if you do have to do a clean install how do you go about saving all the bits and bobs like all the itunes songs and e-mails and stuff

scoobyboy,
You DO have to buy the complete OS. The installer for Tiger allows you various install options:

Upgrade = This will update your existing setup to 10.3.9, maintaining all your settings, this is what I shall be using on my desktop G4 today/tomorrow

Archive and Install = this will archive your existing system folder and rename it to (Previous System) then upgrade the OS. This will preserve settings

Clean Install = This will erase the drive, you will lose all your data, but it will update you to 10.4

When you do a clean install you will be asked if you want to transfer files over from another machine, or partition on this machine. This is essentially what I did. I had 10.3.9 on a partition, with all my data. I then put 10.4 on a new partition and copied over the existing data. This means that I have a nice clean 10.4 setup, with all my data. But it also means, should anything bad happen, I have a full pre 10.4 backup of everything

So far I've upgraded four machines to Tiger and all seems to be well (touch wood).

The machines are:

iBook. Performed a clean install of Tiger, and use the migration tool to copy over the data from my 10.3.9 partition

Test G4. Performed an upgrade over the existing 10.4 seed.

Test iMac. Performed an upgrade over the existing 10.4 seed

G4 (My desktop machine). This was the biggie. Upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4. As said, touch wood, it's gone very well. Mail is taking a while to import all the messages, but that's to be expected, mainly as there are 40,000 messages, plus Spotlight is doing it's thing in the background.

The test G4 seems faster, but that could just be me. iBook seems about the same speed, and I'll report back once mail is up and running and spotlight is complete, on how fast the G4 feels.

I should also mention that my upgrade procedure was not as simple as plonking in a DVD. Most of the test machines, and my desktop, do not have DVD drives. So what did I do? well, I had a cunning plan lol.

I took the dvd image I'd downloaded from ADC and using Disk Utility I perfomed an erase and restore onto a spare partition on the iBook. I then put the target machine into Firewire Target Disk mode, booted from the 10.4 install "disk" and then installed from there.

Why not just FTDM the machine and install from the DVD? well, a) I didn't have a DVD of Tiger, well not yet, b) I don't have a DVD burner on any machines here , and finally c) I had tried this previously with one of the seed DVD's and it took a heck of a lot longer to install than the whole 'erase, restore' method. This might have been due to the dev seed dvd not being optimized and it was looking all over the dvd for the information. This is one of the nice things the finalisation does, puts all the data in the same place. Even still, FTDM from an internal HD is quicker than from a dvd drive.

Very nifty little procedure and has come in very handy
