Forgot about the squealing brakes on the Fiat, mine did it, how 330 mm (or therabouts) sized Brembo disks manage to be so crap is beyond me.

Budgie, not sure what you are on about, prob have missed the point but its fun all the same.

If ure a gambling man buy one, if your not don't, there great car's but not the most reliable of thing's (FIAT: fix it again tomorrow). There great fun to drive, with lift of oversteer and the noise and acceleration's good, but budget around £900 for a cambelt service at your main dealer (it's an engine out job) and check it's had all the recall work done (aircon hose routing + plenty more) i heard of a few early one's catching fire due to problem's with the wiring loom's. Gear box's can be a problem (the oil seal's pop out and drain all the oil) the first thing you'll notice is the clutch slipping, about £2000 for a new gearbox and clutch, but apart from that nothing to worry about. Go and buy one now.

Me too. Wouldn't quite say it was the funniest, but funny all the same.

M5

Simple really, buy a well looked after Coupe and you'll love it. Good looking car, quick as standard, very quick when tuned to 280-300bhp, if you know anything about cars then you'll be able to overcome some of the over-exagerated comments written above. I think there will be a fair few good examples running at Santa Pod on Sunday, come down, have a chat to a few owners and a look around their cars, then make your mind up.

J4CKO,
get the impression you didn't like your coup much.

I bought a 20VT about 4 months ago... have it chipped, strut bar, drilled airbox, K&N filter, Eagle F1s etc. etc. There have been some very valid points about maintenance and dents on doors, however, I absolutely love my coup. Everytime I look at it I smile.... everytime I get in it and let it loose a big grin spreads across my face.

I've driven tons of cars from Skodas to Bentleys and I have never had as much fun as when I'm driving the coup... who wants to drive around in an arm chair?... who wants to drive around in a sports car that doesn't actually give you the chance to drive... just to point it in the right direction?

I'm not saying it is the best car ever.... not sure anyone can claim that about any car... but some guys like blondes, some guys prefer brunnettes... yes I've had a scoob and I liked it, but I prefer my coup.

From the original question... want to do high miles.... I agree with the other guys.... TD the way to go... had an Audi A6 2.8TDI... loved it for the motorway cruising.

So would that M3 with 121,000 miles be significantly cheaper to run than a M5?

Default Fiat Coupe

Dear o'dear, there are some funny posts on this thread

The Coupe turbo is just like any other 'cheap' turbocharged performance car, take your time and buy a well looked after example, and it will reward you with an entertaining reliable driving experience.

There are lots of coupe's which have needed nothing more than the routine servicing through their years. Have a look at the FCCUK forum, there are several mint (limited editions) available right now.

For years, they were the fastest FWD production car , and in some respects they still are with a 1/4 mile of 14.5 secs standard.

There are also more tuning parts available, and yes you can see 300bhp+ quite easily with, like an imprezza with a large turbo and remap.

If you like the cars, just come on the forum, I'm sure a local member will be happy to give you a run out in the car, like the most charismatic cars, its a love it or hate it affair.

And we thought a scoob was expensive

Not anymore, they can be done with the engine in situ for abour £400. Like DoctorFrag says, a well looked after one shouldn't give you to many problems. I used to have one and had no problems with it at all.

Default Fiat coupe

Yes, I've just had my cambelt done for £300

Servicing costs about the same as my friends Imprezza's, depends where you go, the FCCUK forum has many group buys, I've just run one on brake discs for instance, and as said for many the car costs the same in maintenance as your average ford focus.

As far as performance, a recent chap with just an upgraded turbo and plug and play chip, is running 300bhp and 13.2 1/4 miles, now considering this is a FWD car, you can imagine what the in gear acceleration is like.

I've built my car for trackdays, and make no mistake she goes very well indeed, the car being very stable at speed, and very predictable. I've lapped faster than many a modified imprezza, and this is not to start a vs argument, as I really like imprezzas, I'd just like to change some of the usual preconceptions people have against FWD cars.

I think have a ride with one, if you get a chance get to drive one, and see what you think, you may come away hooked!, we have two E46 M3 drivers whom sold their coupe's to get an M3, and then sell again to get another coupe, (not for financial reasons), just because it is a bit of a love affair!
