That's smart! Was it a 'good' deal? (any more?)

Sometimes if I dont very deliberatly change from 3rd to 2nd the 5 speeder I have it will go into 4th! This is due to the engine/box mountings unwinding from the twist of the engine torque. Brings a new meaning to Bogging Down coming out of the bend very very flat..
Thought of using the same design of mounts for the engine?

That'll be noisy, IE pass transmission noises into the frame. Not a worry, but you might think there is something wrong with the transmission........

I'd think quite hard about doing something similar to the engine mounts as the whole deal does need a degree of compliance or something else will break. We used to drill through the engine mounts and fit a not quite tight nut and bolt through the hole, that way the stretch of the mount is limited.

Sump is £100.00 exchange regardless of what the web page says.

Good luck looks like you'll be going again quite soon. l'll pass your thanks on the 'API parts girl ' Clare, she'll be chuffed.

Cool

Thanks David!
I have now trained myself to 'think' hard when changing gear in the heat of the battle though nearly blew the trans last weekend when my clutch foot was out-of-sync wuth the hand shifting....that 6 speeder gets closer....

ps: I thrashed the engine soooo hard hill climbing chasing that bloody EVO and all is PERFECT, though not too much of a surprise eh?

Regards, Graham.

XK-R Had the O ring and used sealant on both water & oil pumps.

David, I have to admit I'd thought about using a bolt in the engine mount, or packing the gaps.

Graham, when the car is fixed I'll give you a tow, that should beat the evo.

Can anybody tell me what size the ARP head bolts are?

Depends on which versions you buy...IIRC the ones that go straight in are 12mm, and 14mm ones are available if you're prepared to machine the block to suit

Oh and I assume you meant head studs?

Mark:

I think you will get your bearings from any good bearing supplier who deals with SKF/Timpkin etc.

Even D Tweeks sell them.
You will have to strip one to get sizes etc, but expect they will be metric.

Fitted the Group A gearbox mount, fiddle around with the heads and started fitting the engine studs. Removed A/C which should save a few pounds.

Week off from Wednesday and the wife is away in NY so should have a chance to do a far bit.

Mark

Got some pics of the mount which I'll post later.

1 thou = 25.4 microns or 0.0254mm, so:

Inlet = 0.2032mm
Exhaust = 0.254mm
Tolerance = +0.0254mm -0mm

A few pictures of the engine build, sorry, but poor quality as the wife has the camera.

All together and timed up I think. If anybody spots anything please let me know. And no it's not attached to the Merc

Lt hand cylinders timed up

Rt hand cylinders timed up

Just noticed that one cam wheels stick out much more than the other, need to investigate. Nice red wrinkle paint finish. I've done two lots of cam covers, new and old style & 2 inlet manifolds, phase 1 & 1.5 Excellent service from Frosts, £7 a tine and next day delivery.

"Group A" gearbox/rear engine mount comared with orginal

Prodrive & API need not worry as I'm the worst engine builder. Project delayed by two hours while I picked up all the cam followers when I turned the engine round without the cams in place , then washed them, and sized them up with feeler gauges etc. Still won't do that again.

Lol @ dropping all the followers. We've all done stupid things like that. I remember torquing up the rockers on an 'A' series engine and noticed that I'd got the pillars wrong somehow and I bent the rocker shaft like a banana

Looking good Mark. At this rate you will have it back into the car inside of the week.
Are you using the 2 litre flywheel/Lateral Paddle (5 puck?)?

What about the rest of the spec for the injectors/turbo etc?

I really want to see how you find it on a sprint/hillclimb situation.
That mounting looks solid and with the engine moving about on rubber it will try to crack the crossmember. Just something to consider. One end of the trans tied down tight and the other end flapping about relativly speaking.
This was why I was considering fitting the box and engine stiffer mounts together, as Gerry has talked of.

Look forward to the next report. So bored I'm painting the garage doors now!

Graham.

Thinking of stupid things happening:

I mounted a hilman Imp steering rack into my Y Type Ford Hot Rod years ago, welding from the underside.

Fitted the steering wheel and the wheels turned in the opposite direction to the wheel....

Disorientated of the West Midlands.

Cheers Graham,

You're not the first to mention the engine mounts & cross member, David API said similar things.

Turbo will be a Andy F 20g when I get round to posting it off to him. I have a 16g FE which I plan to sell to get some of money back.

Injector I have 550cc with adapters by Carl, but having read Bryan's thread slightly nervous about using them. (The injectors that is, nothing to do with Carls work)

Brought a few bits home with me as I can't get back to the car till Sunday. Want to open out the Gruppe-S headers slightly and the inlet manifold.

Do you have an oil pressure gauge and if so ever read it while hill climbing? just worried about surge and wondering if it's worth buying a baffled sump?

Mark

If the injectors have been tested you shouldn't have any problems, once the engine is in and the injectors fitted look for the following with the ignition on but not running.

set the pressure of the reg, I take it you have an in line gauge fitted?
switch off
switch on
check the pressure again - it should stay the same if not do not start

If the pressure drops you know you have a problem, I only found this out after the hydraulic lock

If you need any more information drop me a pm.

Bryan

Sorry Mark

I bought 2nd hand 550cc injectors fresh out of a running car. All ok. The fuel pressure drops over about a minute.
All seems well, 25 mpg ona motorway run.

I have my sump at half way full Mark, never had oil issues, but on a flowing race track, maybe.
Don't think a winged baffled sump worth it imho for hill climbs.

Engine will be 400+ x 380?

Graham.
