also how much of a pain is it to get it the a/c back in and working again. im not planing on selling the car but id still like to know. i think both of the twe eyes on my 93 are part of the chassis. im think ill pass on cutting one of them off just to save 100g!

scoob+bike=fun.... note taken but what do you mean FWIW.

quite straight forward to put back on if you can remember how you took it off

Adam is quite right so make sure there are no government agents with gass testing equipment around when you do it

degassing is dangerous if not done correctly. and it is illegal to vent to atmosphere.
taking off air con and replacing is apiece of p1$$ though.
if you get any where near leeds i can degass and help you remove though!

Regarding the a/c unit I removed this on my sprint car in total and sold it, the rhs radiator fan is past of the system so that went, behind the glove box is an alu radiator thing which was also removed, one heavy weight is the battery which can be replaced with a smaller motorsport item also noted that the cat is rather heavy when I swop it back for the MOT.

Happy stripping, would be interested to know what you get it down to , will weigh my 97 RA and let you know.

How have you done the plastic windows, I wouldn't have thought it possible as they are frameless.

how have people taken the front seats out? is it a case of simply diconnecting the battery.....waiting a while, carefully undoing everything and removing??

My car is an 03WRX and ill looking to get it down to about 1280-1290kg which means front passenger seat, rear seats, speakers, door cards etc.....but im just a little vague about how the front seat can be removed without disturbing the airbag thats in the side of it.....

any help would be appreciated.

Why don't you take out that ugly silver thing from the middle of the picture? That's got to save weight!

So basically the AC system weighed 10kgs with a bit extra for gas/fluids..? lol

I'd rather leave 10 litres of fuel out. After all, the extra drag from having to have your windows down in the summer heat will slow you down more than the AC weight and drag put together..!

BTW there's more to be saved from cutting the unsprung weight, ie smaller alloys and tyres..!

in all honesty (ive owned the car 9 months) the only time i have used my a/c was when i bought the car to see if it worked. so the way i see it i may as well ditch it.

must admit - i have gone beyond the roadcar stuff, its surprising how much the sound deadening weighs in at along with carpets etc.. but jesus when you take it out the din in the car!! now I know why they need intercoms.

next stuff out for me is probably the air con, then it gets a bit more complex - and expensive!! there is a lot of weight in those doors especially with motors for both electric windows and mirrors, I want to lose all of that and replace with carbon door cards and WRC mirrors - but then how do you wind the windows down LOL. I also want to lose that big box that sits as a console for the switches and dccd controls

Yes mate i weighed it all on a set of bathroom scales.....not OVERLY scientific but you can get the idea...

the top of the rear seat is 11kgs
the bottom of the rear seat is 4kg
the rear door cards combined were 4.5-5kgs.

so theres 20kgs straight off

nice one neil.

gravel express id imagine youd take the window winders from a impreza GL or whatever.

front fogs came out today didnt weigh much as hoped (only 1.5 kilo) but im hoping they will earn me some extra cash for engine mods .

yer what that guy said. also if you remove the a/c youll remove the a/c radiator too what sits infront of the coolant radiator. temps should be a little cooler with out sat in front. BUT thinking about it before anyone else says... what happens when you go front mount intercooler? i dunno... also subaru put a top mount intercooler in there too. very silly. was that a good idea or the plastic expansion tanks? no cars perfect and thats why most people modify them.

So is the second fan only used when the aircon is switched on, and at no other time ?
