I'll forgive him this one time. He's always been very good in the past and has saved me a lot of money. Going by the experience of friends finding a perfect accountant is not easy. A mate of mine spent over 10k per annum with accountants and with both he's ended up paying fines for late returns/payments. One of them wanted a backhander for some dubious accounting!

Sent mine back nice and early as usual and the tax man wrote back and said he doesn't see a need for me to have to fill in an anual tax return any more - result!

Just done mine online. Couple of things I was a little unsure about, but too late to do anything about them!! Eg. asks you about income from interest on money in the bank etc?? Surely the tax has already been paid if its money in UK accounts, and how the hell are you going to find out how much interest youve earned from all your accounts over the tax year anyway?!

Edit: what a muppet, Ive just realised Ive put down my employers tax code as my tax code off my payslips - oh well, sure they can find out my employers tax code easily enough, but still a dumb error!

Pete - you need to either get tax certificates from the banks or just phone them

Pete, the tax paid on bank accounts/share dividends etc is paid at standard rate (25%) if you're a higher rate taxpayer your owe them a bit more....

If anybody is still sweating about their return call 08453051000 lines are open til 10pm tonight. Its the debit card payment number for your tax return. AFAIK* as long as you pay the amount due they cannot fine you if you hand the form in late. Tax has to be paid today though!

* Do not take this as 100% accurate as im not an accountant!

Ive just paid mine this way, have your NI number handy also.

Hmmm, I got an email from the Inland Revenue titled "Successful Receipt of Online Submission", yet when I log onto their site and I check my tax return status they say they haven't received it

Looks like I'll be giving them a call, I'll will be most upset if they say they haven't got it after all the last minute hassles I had to complete on time

UPDATE: owing to the volume of self assessment returns their records on their website are not up to date, it will take a day or so to update all the records. They confirmed my return was received on time <phew>

Tried doing mine online yesterday, and the bloody IR website wouldnt let me do it. The reason that I left it so late was that the tax office never sent me a bloody return in the first place, though they where thoughtful enough to send me a reminder to fill the poxy thing out.Had to make an hour and a half round trip to present the bloody thing in person at the nearest tax office( after I got a copy form off my accountant.) So much for computers making it more easy!

The reason I left it so late is cos i'm a numptie, and if I hate doing something i will leave it til the last minute.

I have to say this year though, the IR website has been a nightmare. It was like being back on dialup waiting for it to save the results, and often it wouldnt.

tax return for life......no, why the hell would they want to look at your return if it makes them no money.

as soon as you get to a point where you think a return is pointless (retired, leave work, less pay, whatever) let them know...they will prob agrre with you.

There was an internet rumour a while ago that you get this infomation by spending 20 seconds on the phone to your bank.........sounds like a scam to me, i always phone Tescos instead.
