"No discussion of sniping is complete without mentioning the fabulous sniping done by Marine Sergeant Carlos Hathcock during Vietnam. In one instance, Sergeant Hathcock used a .50-caliber machine gun (in the single shot mode) to obtain one-shot kills at a range of more than 2,000 yards."

Proposition to what? I wasn't suggesting it's a sniper round or accurate coming out the muzzle of an AK. I was only pointing on that the calibre isn't that exclusive.

Sniper rifles are cool, but I still prefer the buzz of emptying a 30-round mag on full auto

Now thats impressive; in order to keep his rating as a Sharpshooter my father only had to shoot accurately at about 1750 yards and that was with an accurised .308 No4

Website link doesn't appear to be working for me?

It's about time I dusted my sniper rifle off actually!

It'd be far more funny if he'd used a Smith & Wesson magnum :-

Weight: 2.6 lbs (1.2 kg) empty with 4 inch barrel.
Caliber: .44 Magnum (Can fire .44 Special as well)
Barrel Length: 4 inch (10.2 cm) [629 only], 6 inch (15.2), 8 3/8 (21/3 cm)
Action: Double Action.
Range: 150 ft (45.7 m).
Cylinder: 6 rounds .
Cost: $600.
Made in: America.
Special: "do ya feel lucky punk"

LOL

Here's my best effort with a Ruger .44 magnum. We were mucking about at 50 yds, shooting with factory open sights and firing single action. It really is a gun for amusement purposes only as trying not to flinch is impossible, especially firing single action!

Dirty Harry must have the recoiless version!

Pretty good! The first handgun I fired was a Colt Anaconda .44 Magnum with an 8 inch barrel. Quite an experience for the first timer! The second was a Ruger .22 rimfire!

A long time ago someone gave me a go on their .44 Magnum; it was a huge framed 8" barrel model S&W. I fired one round and then unloaded it and gave it him back. It was like a f*cking cannon with a pistol grip ffs.

The stupid thing is that, despite the fact that the .44 is ridiculous, I was still getting much better accuracy with it than with the semi auto's. The worst culprit was the 9mm Glock, it sprayed bullets all over the place at longer range. Talk about flicky! I Don't know why people rate them so much!

I think the reason the Glock is so popular is probably down to its reliability, you can put 3 times as many rounds down it than most other pistols before anything goes wrong . Plus its pretty safe - internal hammer, 2 safetys, etc.

I fired a 7.62 single shot pistol in the US a few years back - now that baby had recoil - it had the same round as the old SLR. I saw a couple of people knocked off their feet when firing it with bad firing posture.

It's because of the way the barrel is bedded (only at one end), which means the "float" is predictable. Makes the trajectory a bit high, but repoduceable. The Army here used it as a sniper weapon for ages after 7.62 rifles came out, using a rebored barrel for the new ammo.

Holland & Holland do a side by side double barrelled rifle in bespoke calibres. My uncle had a go with a .700 calibre one. It was one of a matched pair and the ammunition came in hand made "cigar" boxes of just two rounds!

It apparently kicked like a horse!!

According to the site they can make the rifles up to 4 bore!!! That's about 1"!!!

There is also a .50 BMG single shot pistol knocking about somewhere in the US, I think it was a one-off though.

...seems there are a number of these beasts!
"birdman" (of biggerhammer fame) also developed a shorter barrelled version, and a very funny promotional video where he managed to shoot a watermelon at some distance!

I used to be able to hit the target at 1000yrds with a GPMG with iron sites on a range whilst doing the gun run so a trained sniper hitting a target with a telescope ain't much to write home about unless it was in a force 10 gale then I would be impresed.

For 'home defence' in America, you can buy what is, essentially, an AR15/M16 pistol! If you were you to use the lower receiver from a mail order company youd end up with a 30rnd fully automatic M16 pistol.....
