I used to shoot targets at 1,000 yds with a 7.62 quite regularly (not people though obviously ;) ) still, not a bad shot for an American! :D ;)

EvilKyote 12 January 2005 03:53 PM

what? you mean americans actually shoot people other than their own side?

davegtt 12 January 2005 03:54 PM

I cant believe they are being awarded for something like that... strange if you ask me

STi wanna Subaru 12 January 2005 03:57 PM

The first bit reads like a Mills & Boon for gun freaks! They'll be knocking one out over that

hes been credited with it...not got a prize!

and its his job so no different to any other...he's done it very well so his own industry is selling "look, this was good work"

davegtt 12 January 2005 04:00 PM

lol.. surely getting credit for killing someone from long range is the prize ;)

ozzy 12 January 2005 04:02 PM

The yanks do get it right every now and again. Firing a sniper rifle is one of the coolest things I've ever done, but again only at targets. It does seem a bit bizarre when it's for real.

My father was a 'sharpshooter' when he was in the army; he used, I believe, to regularly qualify on targets at out to 1700+ yards using a .303 No.4 and later a .308 Winchester (7.62 Nato) conversion No.4.....

Now I can see why so many were killed in friendly fire:

''...squeezed a few pounds of pressure to the delicate trigger of the M40A3[/b]

mj 12 January 2005 05:48 PM

Taff107 12 January 2005 07:11 PM

Pah.........x20 scope!

Do the same distance with iron sights and I'll agree him being a good shot!:)

Probably couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo without it........

Yeah, that was kind of my point, 1,000 yds is nothing special on a target range, and this is using aperture rear sites!

Funnily enough, I used to shoot the good old 7.62 Enfield no.4 at school. It was amazingly accurate for such a simple piece of engineering!

Never had a chance to shoot the original .303 unfortunately, but a lot of the old timers said they preferred it....

Jamie 12 January 2005 07:20 PM

Nah wish it was me ;)

Simon C 12 January 2005 07:21 PM

I think thats way out of date, IIRC the record is over 2000 yrds at the mo, set with a Barrett .50 in Afganistan. A sniper hit a target at over 1900 yrds during Gulf war 1.

mj 12 January 2005 07:23 PM

my grandad reckoned he could shoot the light bulbs out of german sentry boxes at 3000 yds with his bren gun - I didn't believe him when I was 10, even less so now :)

Tidgy 12 January 2005 07:26 PM

as far as i'm aware (corect me if i'm wrong), the barreta 82 had the longest confirmed kill? at something that was measured in miles?

Tidgy 12 January 2005 07:27 PM

damn beat to the trigger lol

Is that a Beretta/Barret handgun/rifle hybrid? ;)

Apparently the conversion piece used to fly out with the spent case if you cycled the bolt too enthuiastically..... I believe that accurised No.4's were used for a long time after the Bristish army adopted the .308 round, Im not sure hed take to being called an old timer just yet.

Tidgy 12 January 2005 07:36 PM

lol, .50 sniper rifle as put in a previouse post

John Catlin 12 January 2005 07:40 PM

Remember back in 56 - 57 hitting a couple of cows @ about 5 miles with a 25 pounder !!!!!!

Jerome 12 January 2005 07:41 PM

For the record, the .50 cal rifle (cannon?) is now legal to buy in the US again (according to the 60 Minutes programme). The only restrictions are on armour piercing, explosive and/or incendary rounds (ordinary armour piercing rounds are fine thank goodness). Quite what a sports shooter/hunter would need with a .50 cal is beyond me...

As for the record kill distance, maybe the operative word here is "confirmed"?

GC8 12 January 2005 07:43 PM

For the coveted prize; the Elk in Second Chance body armour.....

mj 12 January 2005 07:43 PM

seems odd, if you can see em' to drop the crosshairs on them you should be able to see the space where thier head used to be?
