dont get me wrong the evo is superior in just about every way to a scoob but it just isnt as much fun to drive hard. to drive the evo really hard it is just too hard to feel whats going on imo (que everyone from the mlr tearing me to pieces about how ****e a driver i am) thus its just a not as rewarding perhaps due to the yaw control although i am getting used to it. maybe its just me but despite the evo having the most direct/responsive front end of any performance car ive driven it just feels a bit twitchy when pushed hard where as the scoob although understeering every time you pushed it hard felt very predictable and rewarding to thrash.
as far a s scoobs being too common i have to agree cos thats the main reason i bought my evo. but there are plenty rarer models that those in the know will know! type r type ra etc. in out and out performance/handling the evo will always beat a scoob but they just dont get me as up for it as a good scooby.

NEXT CAR 22b definately!!!!
Now thats what i call a constructive opinion. Can we have more comments like this please. If the thread started like this then there wouldn't have been a slagging match.

I'm not saying Evos are bad cars, it's just not the car for me.

As they say it "horses for courses" if you like Evos then buy an Evo and vice-versa if you like Scoobs but for someone to say I don't want a scoob now because they are for chavs so I'm buying an Evo is ridiculous (go to the MLR forum and the same thing is said about Evos getting too "chavvy"

By the same token you shouldn't by a Porsche as there are lots of crappy 924/944's about owned by pikeys, take it a step further and you could say I'm not buying a BMW because too many coloured people drive old knackered ones (and thats an awful thing to say though I've heard it a lot)

As someone else intimated before "If you're happy with it drive it, don't worry about what others think"
Hi Pogue. No I d'ont own an Evo, nor do I dream of one. I have owned 4 different Scoobs over the last 8 years or so but d'ont drive one at the moment. I was'nt trying to have a dig but just get tired of the 'Scoobs can never be critizised' brigade.I think we agree that its horses for courses,we just happen to be different horses!

Not all classic shape impreza's are the same!
Yes well obviously I wasn't meaning a 276bhp STi when I said that, I was referring to a UK 96-00 Scoob that so many more of us can now afford.
But I am willing to bet that it wouldn't be too far behind you over a lap at Silverstone, so mabe 2 notches instead of one
Don't get me wrong, I love the classic shape (used to have one) but I never once considered it a "performance icon".

This thread is an all time classic. It's rediculous that you firstly think like this but then to share it on the forum and advertise yourself as a total knumpty! Indeed I did have a 'classic' scoob up until a few months ago and never once did I feel like a chav driving it and only once did I see a chav'd up classic scoob.

As a number of people have pointed out the fact even a WR1 only costs 29k does not make it a supercar, the lowly VW Golf GT TDi I drive daily now cost 23k and does 0-60 in about a decade but it's my choice! Yes I would like another scoob (several P1's, STi's and 22b's take my fancy) but for the moment I've decided to sit tight and invest my hard earned cash in other things, another flat and much needed cash-flow for my growing business.

Like many have said indeed the Impreza is a desirable car for many and yes it will draw attention to you and the very fact that people have opinion will make sure everybody draws their own opinion of you, big deal!? If you want road status buy a DB9 not a rice rocket scoob or evo

I am afraid you have got it wrong Trem... there is no possible way you can say that an Impreza broke the mould and paved the way for others in the 90's. The Impreza only evolved because of the Escort Cosworth.

as some one who is looking to buy a p1 in the near future i find this thread more suited to a max power forum so some scoobys are going cheap they are over 10yrs old now and some chavs are buying them so what who you trying to impress the 15yr old school girls??? sorry to say it mate but unless you are a track driver i really dont see the point of an evo as you will waste/kill an amazing car by driving it on the road everyday if you wanna be exclusive then buy a db9 it sounds to me like you aint going to be happy no matter what you get

nice thread,
Was it STIG that said that the scoob is a boys car and that the evo is a mans car
Myself i would go for a RS6 if i wanted to be exclusive.Loads of people have bought scoobs because they look great, sound great with great performance. The evo 1234 are under 10k but not as desirable as the classic scoob and hardley any in the country anyway.when it comes to the 5678 they are still high in price! not in the CHAVS REACH YET!

I must say that top gear has not helped matters.on the performance board the scoob does not come close to an evo.

LOL at blaming top gear...

Maybe its not very good ?

Personally don't think much of the scoob, very boring to drive and not a challenge at all. Never driven an evo to comment on tho.

I really don't think the Escort Cosworth is considered an icon. Sierra Cosworth yes, Escort no.

It really depends what is classed as an icon, an escort cosworth in the street will turn more heads as they are rare, where as a scoob is common as foook.

There is 3 on my street LOL, mind you there is an intergrali evo to, now thats an ICON

And again -

DICTIONARY QUOTE DEFINITION OF ICON "An object of admiration, esp. as a representative symbol of something".

The Escort & Sierra Cosworth fall in here, as does Impreza, EVO but also Nova, Saxo, Fiesta etc if you include its widest definition.

I tend to agree with you about the Lancia Integrale being more of a basis for the 90's icon, which the Escort Cosworth started slightly before Mitsubishi. The Impreza came much later! Don't forget these 'hot hatches' were going into production as rally cars and road going versions. The Sierra Cosworth of the 80's was based on a family sedan and thus had some inertia problems whereas the Lancia was much more compact and versatile. Ford Motorsport came up with an alternative and the declared ambition to beat Lancia. This alternative was the Escort Cosworth.

Just how does the Impreza qualify for this? Surely not just because it became a mass produced car?

Sorry Lynne, but you're wrong.

The Impreza broke the mould BECAUSE it was a mass produced car in it's class, and has continued to evolve. Other cars mentioned, including yours, are doubtless great, and in many ways more groundbreaking cars, but were nothing more than fairly expensive short run homologation models.

As such, I would consider even things like the Renault Espace and Megane could be considered as both groundbreaking and icons.

I presume we are still talking about icons?

I doubt Subaru would agree with you Josh, they were quite happy to continue with the Legacy until Ford and Mitsubishi got ahead of them in the early 90's. We could then digress onto the subject of heritage but keeping on topic, I can't see how anyone can possibly disagree with this statement

I am sure Subaru have used and still do use the words legend and icon in their promotional literature.

Common is a Mondeo or an Astra - Subaru just do not sell the numbers to make them "common", ie available to all.

Has no one noticed that the guy who started this thread told us back in October that he'd sold the Scooby?

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthrea...98#post3826798

Oh, unless he had more than one, in which case if he wants to sell it and buy something else then good luck to him. He should just go out round all the car dealers and take a lot of test drives. It's great fun!!!

Just read through the thread & tbqh some peoples heads are up there @rse's

My 2p's !!

I bought a MY04 Sti this march & totally loved it being only 24 at the time it was always my dream car & i always said i WOULD get one which i did, i dont wear burberry or any of that other ****e, instead its clothes with the red label & the orange label's , unfortunatly i had to sell the scoob as my relationship broke up & i had to buy another house, now the impreza was everything i could ever want, my little lad (5) loved it along with me & it was my prized possession as i would damn hard to get it ..... the day i traded it for a corsa diesel broke my heart ....... then last month i got the chance to get myself into another JAP tin can ('cause thats exactly what they are) ..... so i plumped for the EVO VIII 260, got a few extras added & away i went puttered about until the 1000 mile service, then gave it large ...................................... & have a guess what i was away looking at on friday ................ a MY04 JDM Sti ....

Now i am not going to go into a slanging match but the Scoob is miles better i took the evo up roads i went with the scoob & i felt the scoob a better reassurance & felt much more driver responsive ... now i no i have only had the EVO for about 5 to 6 weeks but its just not the same

I also know its only the 260 but its still the same

So back to scoob ownership it will be ............... well if the figures add up & i dont see an R34 i like

Got to also say that were i stay there is .......................... 2 scoobs in a 20 mile radius that i no about ......... so they aint common

My 2p's

How about the other meanings for icon and not just the one you choose?

"An important and enduring symbol"

Would be another meaning for the word icon.

I suppose its how you look at it personally. I see the Golf GTi as an icon, also the 205 GTi, also the Cossie and also the Impreza.

I see all the above cars as important and enduring symbols of modern day cars.

If people were to ask me some of the most important performance road cars of the last 20 odd years I would not say Saxo or a Nova. If I did I feel I would get laughed at.

"Hey Trem name an important and enduring symbol of performance road cars of the last 20 years"

"erm....well......the Fiesta is the one that springs to mind....no wait!....Saxo!!!"
