Meridian- The whole issue about vitamin C in particular was raised in a hospital ward full of spinal injured patients. I remember it was at the same time the findings of Leicester university were published.

Several patients refused to continue taking vitamin C because of the findings. The Consultant however wasn't amused as every patient there had 1000-1500mg/day and said it was necessary.

The patients that refused were back taking them in a day or so.

People have taken large doses daily for many years with no ill effects. Maybe that's the luck of the draw, who knows?

The doctors and consultants that I know still seem to encourage, certainly the vulnerable, to regularly take vitamin C.

That's more like it, give that handbag a good hard swing!

And it's a good job too, because for a moment there I thought you were upset because, as you said in this thread:

Dragging things back to the subject matter....

A quick way to relieve pressure on the middle ear is to drink a hot beverage (lemsip is ideal) and hold your nose at the same time as swallowing... this forces some of the liquid up the eustacian tube (links the back of your throat to the middle ear) and this helps drain the gunk that blocks it...

You really shouldn't fly with a head cold (I worked for British Midland for 9 years, and we were always banned from flying if we had a cold) 'cos it hurts like buggery if you do...

A memory doesn't involve cutting and pasting. Face it, you're a stalker.

I've seen it now, excessive vitamin c intake can cause paranoia, short temper and loss of humour.

You might (or might not) be surprised what consultants will encourage patients to do when the consultant feels (for whatever reason) that there is nothing that can be done. This could be because he/she consideres the condition untreatable, or because he/she thinks the patient is lead-swinging. Doctors in general are great believers in the placebo effect, and will often prescribe things that are little more. The vit C might work (although I doubt it), but don't assume the consultant is prescribing it because it actually does anything.

As a post script to this thread , I have come across an alternative cure.
Some bloke years ago established that the cold/flu virus enters the human body via the ear !
His recommendation is to put a 3% solution of Hydrogen Peroxide into each ear for a few minutes at the earliest signs of infection. This kills the virus in its tracks apparently.
Now I did'nt have any HP , but I did spend a bit of time yesterday washing out my ears under a hot shower.
Today I feel better!

SSSHHH!!! Don't tell Spoon, he'll end up perforating his ear drum!!

In all seriousness, do you really believe that nonsense? The virus, usually via aerosol transmission, is inhaled through the nose or mouth, or it enters via the eyes, then down the sinuses.

I would recommend you do NOT rinse out your eyes with hydrogen peroxide!!!

Now you have the cold it is in your lungs, so washing out your ears will have no effect even if it they were the entry point!!

I've just been through this - and I felt such a fraud having to go to docs - but had been ill since August! Basically I kept refusing to lie down and take it easy and let my bod recover - upshot was I fried my immune system so what was a pretty regular infection/ virus combo just got worse and worse and worse.

Only remedy was bed rest, lots (and LOTS >2.5 litres per day) water. The antibiotics were only helpful for the infection and the paracetamol relieves the symptoms and cures nothing! On top of those (as I was very run down) I took a high dose multi vit and ate loads of veg.

On recommendation from the company nurse I also tried Bachs Rescue Remedy (I was so desperate I would have eaten toads and newts if I'd thought it would help!) - it's not a cure, but it relaxes you and helps your body recover. Like you I was stressing out cos I wasn't getting better (Sadly I love my job and it's in the food industry and colds and the food industry simply don't mix!) - it was no miracle cure, but it did helop me chill out and take it a bit easier. You can get it from Boots in the Homeopathic remedy section.

Hope you feel better soon - but try and relax and take it easy - you have to give your body a fighting chance to recover!

I guess your ears must have been burning Spoon, and not just because of the hydrogen peroxide!

New game for everyone - see if those people coming to work back quickly from colds have extremely blonde ears.
