Uniquely among the nuclear powers, AWE covers the whole life-cycle of nuclear warheads, in a single organisation. This includes initial concept, research and design, through component manufacture and assembly, to in-service support and, finally, decommissioning and disposal.

The Government's Strategic Defence Review in 1998 emphasised the continuing importance of AWE to the nation. While highlighting the need for progress on arms control, it confirmed that the United Kingdom continues to require a credible and effective minimum nuclear deterrent.

It outlined AWE's tasks for the future:-

To maintain the warheads for the Trident nuclear deterrent safely and reliably in service.

To maintain a capability to design a new weapon, should it ever be required.

To complete the dismantling and disposal of redundant warheads replaced by Trident.

To develop the skills, technologies and techniques that could underpin future arms limitation treaties.

Trident, a submarine-launched ballistic nuclear weapons system, is currently the United Kingdom's sole nuclear deterrent in both the strategic and sub-strategic roles.

If Pslewis's claims of working for the technical side at AWE(rather than driving the bus) is true, is anyone else really worried about the state of our nuclear weapons
BTW Pete how is the yellow badge?

To stray into a serious answer in a PSL post (rare, I know ). "Nuclear Registered" means nothing, as pointed out earlier in the post. However, sites do need to be licensed. For civil nuclear sites, this is granted by HM Nuclear Installations Inspectorate - who are state run and effectively part of the HSE. To maintain the license, there are large numbers of conditions which the operator has to demonstrate meeting. Sites directly under M.O.D. control are IIRC handled a little differently.

You could try asking for a nuclear site license at the post office, but I suspect it would receive blank looks.

From memory, I don't believe that a prescribed on site speed limit is directly a license condition (though I can't claim to know the Nuclear Installations Act in detail). However, a well enforced speed limit may form part of a safety case demonstrating that the risk of a foreseeable accident occuring (i.e. car on site crashing into the worst possible building at speed) is reduced as far as practicable.

None of the above was cut and pasted from anywhere, as I still have control of my wits, possibly unlike certain elder statesmen on this board?

The fact remains that driving at 20mph is soothing and relaxing

I vote that we introduce a 20mph limit for around towns/villages/cities

and 40 elsewhere - 70mph on the motorway is fine

BUT, enforce it STRICTLY with £100/6 point fines and LOADS more cameras!!

Those who do 50% over the posted limit are banned!

Lets END speeding once and for all!!

I'm assuming from your first setence that you're suggesting 20mph isn't actually a site license condition after all, then?

I think Pete bases his "speed kills" theory on the fact that if we all went at zero mph then no one would ever get run over! Extrapolating that up then going just 1mph could in theory run someone over, which is an infinite percent rise in fatalities over going zero miles per hour, hence speed kills....

Hence the national speed limit should be ZERO mph!

How's that Pete? Loony enough for you?

That's the big problem with democracy - even PSL gets a vote. The benefit is, so do the 40 million people in this country who are elligible and in better possession of their faculties.
