i owned both a 1.9 gti and a clio 16v for 1 year each and found the clio had the edge over the 205. i made the mistake of getting a rs turbo fiesta after the clio and found the hanndling wasn't as good at all(understeer city!).

for a stripped out track car an mi16 205 will be a good choice but you will pay for a good one.

Is a 1990 XR2 your thinking of a MK3 shape?

Better off with a MK1 or MK2 XR2 for fun and speed plus they are more simple and thus easier to modify and repair. And the advantage that you would get far better response from engine mods (zetec upgrade etc).

The Mk3's are alot heavier - better chassis, and slightly better handling and manners, but if your after a MK3 then there is only one type to go for IMO:

...The RS1800 with the 130bhp engine (engine code RQB or RQC) as the XR2 (1.6 CVH and 1.8 105bhp zetec) versions lack the nessercery grunt to get it moving.

My step day had one and said it handled like a dream. Said it was like driving a go-kart until he wrote it off.

get the 205 - they handle like a dream
errrm...... not if you lift off mid corner they don't!

first time you are out on track with the car pick a nice wide corner with plenty run off, give it some into the corner then lift off.

make sure there is no one behind you though

they are great once you learn not to back off on the corner but sometimes you have to if you are up behind the car in front, the reason i said go for the clio is they don't have this problem as you will know, if you back off on a corner it will just slide out.

if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the pug???

do you have any photo's yet???

pleased you didn't get a golf, don't like the way they handle at all!

Jonny,

I'm planning to go to Bedford on the 26th Feb (SIDC day, call Phil Stephens for details!!) and run it there. I understand there's plenty of room, just in case I get it 'wrong' . It'll give me the chance to kick Gangsta Smurfs' @rse as well

At the moment, I have paid 175.00 for the car. That's before Lord Lucan pays the cheque in. Have you done that yet J?? Lets just say all parties are VERY happy

How about a 309 Gti? Same basic mechanicals as the 205 even down to sharing the same doors, just about as quick, and it handles better than the 205, eliminating the 205's habit of lift off oversteer.

Ed - will do it tomorrow... knew there was something I forgot to do today...he he.

Ed paid £675 which was approximately what the car owed me. I bought it from here in Oct but the job I bought it for fell through. Yes I could have sold it for a lot more, it really is a good one, 1 female owner for 10 yrs !! But Ed will do what I would have loved to do with the car, plus I didnt have to advertise it etc etc, was such an easy sale to a top fella....!!!

I have even got a pax ride in the car promised from Ed if I make Bedford.

Now dont you wish all car sales were like this...

chalk and cheese really, i wouldn't consider the xr2 as a good track car in standard form but i would the 205.

better to be safe than put it backwards into the tyre wall, after all, the idea is to have fun

Lift off oversteer - thats why I bought a Cup ! On a track it will be a plus point.

Eds 205 is very hard to get the back out, I put it down to the 4 new F1s on the car...

I have an XR2i Trackcar

1990 8v version

it may only have a 1.6 cvh with 110 bhp but with it being sat on coilovers and having huge cosworth brakes it handles like a dream, i've put a few higher powered cars to shame at donnington, including a impreza.

i must admit though, the cvh does lack the grunt required when on the straights, however, due to a recent engine failure its now got a 2.0 zetec going into to it as we speak .

oh, cost me £200 in march this year, spent 3k since

definatley a golf, the pug will break - as i've seen many times. I track an '86 audi quattro (sometimes), and it just keeps going @190k miles i know the engine is a 5 cyl but its based on the golf's 4 and thats just as strong. Every track event I attend there is atleast a couple of people who have to fix something on a pug. If you buy a golf get a pre 1990 model, no engine electronics and they're cheaper.
