My insurance is quite reasonable actually, i get 4 doors, my car doesnt look like a bread van, i have double the torque (if not more than double) than a CTR, over 100bhp more, huge brakes as standard and the last ctr that wanted to play (showing off to his girlfriend ) was left for mucho dust (he was about 100m behind me after 400m )
He did try the same thing again though, with the same result, he gave up after that lol! (and i wonder why i only get 24mpg )

Can I just say that I am utterly embarrased to be a CTR owner after reading ScrappyDoo's comments . I've never heard such wishful, naive, schoolboy hogwash, and I want to make clear that he is not representative of the CTR owner population.
I've owned my CTR for nearly 2 years. I think it's a fantastic car which does everything it says on the tin. It's very demanding of the driver and, when driven properly, is very rewarding. It kicks *** with others of its own class and will keep up, even beat some of your basic AWD turbo Scooby's, but never STIs, P1s or EVOs and certainly not anything bearing an AMG badge.
I would characturise an AMG as being a supercar in a suit. Their performance is up there with the likes of 911's. The sheer brute force means weight is less of an issue. I've had the pleasure of witnessing an SL55 AMG off the lights and it was devastating . To compare the CTR with an AMG is like comparing Frank Spencer with Mike Tyson. Another thing to remember is the type of people who own AMGs are middle aged, mature company directors who have nothing to prove to a Japanese hot hatch. Are they going to bother trying? I think this was the case with you, Scrappy Doo.

This thread seems to be getting a tad vitriolic considering the light-hearted way the banter began. Don't spoil it by turning it into a slanging match.

Lastly an E55 is everybit as fast as a Skyline R33 GTR (in the book). Keeping up or even beating them - I don't think so.

take yer burberry cap off and you might see that it was more likely to be a 'badged' E Class that you were beating, unless your just spouting total rubbish and you didint beat it at all!!
an E55 is probably the fastest car that i have been in and comparing that to the CTR is like..... well..... you just cant! when someone in an E55 puts thier foot down its as if you have pulled in at the side of the road!
as for 'minor mods' to get a CTR up to 240/250Bhp he's having a laugh! you can get it up to that N/A but it takes some doing and a lot more than a few grand!
its not impossible to reach those heights tho cos there are a few lads on www.civictype-r.co.uk that have them supercharged AFTER getting it up to 240/50ish so they are now pushing out around 300Bhp!

Test Drove a C55AMG 2 weeks ago.
Ars*d ended it in a roundabout with the sale man and my dad in the car.
I could afford the car, couldn't (or wouldn't afford the depreciation!!!!)
Still not very good build quality for a £50K car, so ordered a WRX PPP. and keeping mr C220 CDI as well....
Logic there somewhere i'm sure..

Fact of the matter was i raced him, he blitzed me off the lights, i caught him and overtook him, he pulled up next to me and gave me the thumb. End!! Can we all leave it there now. Corr, kids eh?

Scrappy, I cant believe you still want us to believe that you blitzed an amg 55 in a 'slightly breathed on ctr. My 'standard sti 4 p*ssed all over a ctr and trust me, he WAS trying. So by believing what you are saying, my car could destroy an e55 amg. I dont think so. Its so funny when someone starts to say his car is quicker than anyone elses, oh and that their k*ob is bigger too!

I just had a race with an Enzo and blitzed it in my 996!........Does this seem reasonable?
This is just as likely as a CTR doing the same to an E55 AMG, without exagerating, the difference is about the same.
Not having a pop at you scrappy, but if you read the top line and think about it for a few mins, you'll see why everyone as reacted the way they have. Food for thought fella

Chris i dont care what you believe tbh
Have you all forgotten that there are 2 versions on the E55 AMG. One with 476bhp and one with 354bhp. Anyone who has driven or been in one have probably been in the newer models. The 354bhp model aint exactly light weights either weighing in at 1642kg. Thats nearly half a ton more than a CTR and puts the AMG in the Evo power - weight territory. Imagine dropping a gear and trying to acclerate carrying that weight around. It aint the best i can tell ya.

Remember that an STi is 1470kg, with the PPP its 300bhp, that will eat a ctr for dinner, nearly the same ptw as the AMG but i doubt it would keep up that well (the 354bhp one).

The quicker you're going the more power/aerodynamic drag is the issue rather than power/weight... so at speed the Merc would have an even bigger advantage with more power and almost certainly less drag (I haven't checked but large saloon cars generally have much lower drag than small cars with a bread-van vertical rear).

From a standing start it will Tony, but when you drop the gears to overtake i dont think it would mate. I tested it with my mates evo 5 two days ago and he slammed me when coming off roundabouts etc but when we came up behind another car and both had to floor it was equal all the way, couldnt believe it

Even the W210 AMG (the normally aspirated earlier car) still has double the torque for each kg he is carrying (and at far more usable RPM) compared with the CTR. He also has an autobox and will barely notice the number of gears he has dropped.
Despite having more than double the power to weight and nearly three times the torque to weight ratio of a standard CTR, I would never underestimate any AMG, especially at speed. I've come across a few, and you have to work to pass. CTRs on the other hand (not tried the Ruf variety LOL) - I honestly can't tell if they are trying or not. Even if I leave it in 6th gear at motorway speeds they still lose, even on the low boost setting.
As I said, teenager's cars. Or for people who are trying to save money. I'd rather have a Skoda vRS, oh, in fact we did given the choice of that or the rather appalling Type S. Salesman told me how it had all the lessons learned from the Type R whilst I was roll induced understeering it around the bends LOL. The early CTR I tried a few years ago was gutless and did hang on better in the bends, but it is a cheap hot hatch, no point in pretending it mixes it with AMGs when the driver actually has hit foot on the floor.

Come on ladies and gentleman. Scrappy doo has his opinions and i'm sure he believes what he's saying. End of.
The only problem i've had since reading this thread is I was to race and beat every CTR out there. Whether they won't to race or not

A couple of videos of CTR versus Scoobs @ Knockhill. First one is of me against a 260bhp classic
http://type-r-scotland.com/files/cal_scooby.wmv (only 10 meg)
This ones of me against ( I presume) a standard Classic.........
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/thedougster/Cal.wmv ( only 7 meg)
I know this was originally about some AMG horse**** story but i merely wish
to educate a few peeps in here that the CTR is v.quick round a track and can easily
keep up with some scoobs.........
Cal
p.s. last time i posted these clips on SN there was an eery silence so your comments are welcome please

Nice vids Cal. The first one shows that in the dry you are cornering at a similar speed to the Scooby, but he is pulling away out of the corners and on the straights I thought, which is what you would expect? The second one had the car in front quite twitchy in places, I thought he just slowed down at McIntyre's for some reason, he was going quite well until then They show more about the driver than the car. Looks like you have quite a tidy style.
It validates nothing about the relative performance of a CTR and an E55 AMG though!
