im a staffy fan, ive got two bitches from the same litter, they are completely bonkers, wreck your house, dig up all your garden, chew anything and everything thats not made of concrete, but apart from that, they are such kid-friendly dogs, i wouldn't part with them for anything!
BTW If you get a rottie, get a bitch, as the males can be a bit dominant in the house, I did have one, but he died aged 7.
Thats another thing, the larger the breed, the shorter the lifespan...ie average lifespan of a staffy is 14/15, for a Rottie, its around 9
oh bugger, I knew I should have read the whole thread lol

Funny when that happens.
What I'm thinking is, who ran a search on a dog thread and dug it up! I was expecting someone to be saying "what did you get in the end" but nope it was just a standard reply !!

Id recommend an alsation/german shepard or a staff.German shepards are great for guard duty ,they have street cred, can be good with kids and are very loyal. The same can be said for staffs except id say the staffs are a lot better with kids.
Ive currently got a bitch staff(irish) and a male english bull terrier. The staff is brilliantly trained and has a lovely temperament ,shes very big for a staff aswell which i reckon would put most burgulars off.She is also very loyal and wouldnt think twice about protecting her owners, shes also great with kids, although a little heavy for small kids laps .
The english bull is.. well.....a nutter .We had a police trainer try and help train him and after a couple of weeks he just turned round and said he was the most untrainable dog he has ever come across!Im not even sure what he would do if someone broke into the house,he is very stubborn and if he doesnt want to do something ,he doesnt. But hes still part of the family and we make allowances for him being so....special!

Bulldogs are renowed for being family dogs, pi55es me off though when you walk him down the high steet and people pull their kids away, hes probbaly the most friendliest dog they'd ever meet yet his ugly looks (or gorgeous which ever way you look at it) scare people, (which is good for the protection thingy). tbh I really think as much as a softy he is he'd protect any1 in this house until he was layed out himself, Superb dog. couldnt get much more faithful

Saw a different side to him the other day though.
Normally the most placid dog in the world - never any hint of agression.
Gave him a bone the other night. He refused to come in and then went berserk when anyone went near the bone. growling, teeth showing and bite my brother on the leg - had to be locked up for 3 hours - then still growled at my brother the next morning. Very very scary - he reminded me of a lion -saw a different side to him.
Back to normal now - cant believe his behaviour the other night - wouldnt leave him with small children any more - dont trust him 100% - did before.

Got two Rottweilers, six months old this week.
The pix at the bottom are from about two months old, the middle pix are about three and a half months and the top row are last week!
15lbs ish when I got them, 75lbs ish now, going to be in the region of 130lbs. Excellent family and guard dogs and relatively easy to train!
