I'd third the comments on the Saab 9000 Aero.

What about a Mitsubishi Galant VR4?

Saw a VR4 here in Plymouth yesterday. Very nice indeed. Didn't they top a survey not so long ago as the worst depreciating car available when bought new?
Don't really get that but all the same an awful lot of car when bought 2nd hand.

I'm pretty keen on something like a VR4 but when I was looking into the option between a VR4 and Legacy GTB the insurance would have been a killer due to the fact that they are imports.

Zafira GSi I was defo looking into. Do you know what put me off...commments made by 'EVO' Magazine regards its handling and the fact that it is 2WD as I would probably want to tune it and get all the power down without pure wheelspin. Have you had any experince with the car?

I haven't had any experience of them. I know they;re tunable, at least 240bhp with simple chip tuning and is based on the Astra chasis, but as MPVs goes, I'd say its still handles with its stiffened suspension. Afternarket springs may improve the handling buy lowering the ride a littile. Despite what Evo say it is an MPV afterall. Take one for a test drive before dismissing it. I considered one when my twins arrived but were too expensive at the time, so got an audi Avant instead. Definitely a a sleeper, ignore at your peril!!

Aaquil have you consdered and Audi S4 or RS2? I just picked up my RS4 and it's de-badged which should hopefully make people think its a 1.9Tdi with snazzy arches and fancy bumpers >Stealth mode on!<

As someone says the Volvo's are good value and very fast but its gonna need lots of front tyres - just accept it pay the price?

RE RS4 - mine has sports exhaust/cats & is remapped - 470LbFt torque Basically it has a phenomenal engine that oozes quality & balance with a high pitched 'race like' HUGE 450bhp stomp (as opposed to the Scoobs bass throb). Engine & power is way, way ahead of the Scoob - I'm hangin on rather than going 'go-on'!!!
Handling/grip/poise/balance is currently short of the STi; it also tramlines like a b@stard on certain roads - although the huge phat wheels look nice in the car park 'Very clever' ESP is horrible and kills all slippage when drifting it wide on the power. [You can switch it off but that kills the 'anti swap ends' mode as well as TC...)

Judgement reserved so far, although I am still smitten and realisticly expected it not to live up to the Scoob's dynamics.

D

PS mate, did I mention MBNA doing 0% loans till Aug 2005...

A bit confused, but aren't RS4s and Merc E55AMG targets for the worst kind, professional car theives who steal to order using extreme measures to get what they want?

I imagine expensive looking/new/prestigious cars are the most likely targets for carjackers. Various newspapers, have reported merc, porsches, bmws. Only recently there was carjacking where the owner of an audi TT was killed for his car.

jonc thanks for the input and I was not being sarcastic before I just wanted to know if you knew any specific cases yourself and what had happened etc.

That's awful (Regards the TT driver) ...I say a life for a life. The scumbag should be executed if he ever gets caught.

So basically if I'm willing to take the risk of car jacking and theft then go for an RS4, M5 etc. if not forget it and get an Skoda Octavia 1.8T 4X4 tune the hell out of it and hopefully if it looks reasonable standard its less likely to get stolen.

But compared to all the car jackings and stealing keys via break ins (then the car) with Impreza's are these other cars (M5's, RS4's etc.) as desirable to scumbag theives as Impreza's?

I think it can depend on where you live. I would love an RS4 or M5, but if you live in an area where crime rate is high, I'd stick with something less flash. I would say that imprezzas, especially the specials, eg 22b, P1, etc are just as much a target as a Merc, BMW, Porsche etc. for getting carjacked, stolen, keyed, etc just depends on where you are. Though carjackings are still rare, thankfully, compared with other car crimes, it is growing. I am a bit of a petrolhead, but I also have a family and therefore considered carefully what car I'd buy as a family car, so no Evos, Imprezzas, M3s, S4s. etc.

jonc considering your last sentence and the fact that you are a petrol head and have a family what car would you consider?

Well I considered getting a Octavia 4x4, Zafira GSI, Mondeo ST200, Accord TypeR, Bmw 328(e36), but settled for '99 Audi A4 1.8T Avant Quattro, and then chipped it. Bit of a sleeper and even supprised a Focus RS where I managed to edge away from one between 80-100.

I'm defo considering a Octavia 4X4, Zafira GSI or Type R but I think I would like the security of 4WD so and Audi may be a consideration. What's the handling like on your Audi and what torque/BHP figures is it pushing out? By the way thanks for all the replies.

My previous car was Cliosport 172 which IMO is great handling car, but I know the Audi was never expected to be as responsive or as adjustable as the Renault. The 172 is hooligan and can be flicked in to bends with little understeer and controllable liftoff oversteer. The Audi obviously isn't as nimble, but supprisingly is quite a neutral handling car, perhaps down to the Quattro system. I had my car chipped by Upsolute and they quote 211bhp and 227lb/ft for my model and you can definitely feel the difference. This is my first AWD car and compared to all my previous FWD cars I don't think I'll ever replace the Audi with a FWD family sized car. I thought a car like this would tend to understeer, but instead feels as though it drifts 4 a piece, no more front wheel scrabble or lack traction off the line.

Good choice, their 1.8T engines are tuneable to around 220-230bhp. Definitely a stealth mobile. A few people on this forum have moved from Imprezzas to Octavia vRS and 4x4 and are quite happy with their decision. The 4x4 rides slightly higher that other Octavias but aftermarket springs can sort out that out and improve handling. Check out www.briskoda.net for more info if you haven't already.
