What 2nd Cheap + Fun Car to buy?
#37
My 2nd car is a 205 GTi Mi16, most of the reasons for not getting one are untrue.
Insurance, if 2nd car you can get on classic car insurance. 205 1.6 GTi is just over £100, 1.9s under £200. I pay £250 for modded Mi16 doing 20k miles a year on a normal policy.
Reliability, in last 10k miles I've spent £18 on non service parts. Mini service is just oil/filter £30, yearly service is around £100. You may have to get hands dirty occasionally.
Economy, I get 35mpg in Mi16, 1.9 I used to get 31mpg. Its more modern engine/ignition than original.
Sunday jobs, you can get some serious crap in the back, boot space is wide and flat. Those 1m cube skip bags fit nicely and you don't care what you throw in it.
Rattles, mines pretty rattle free. Nope I can't believe it either.
Performance, a standard Mi makes around 160-170bhp in a car that weighs 920kg. Most 1.9s struggle to get 120bhp but are 20kg lighter. Performance between Boxster and Boxster S.
Handling, it was great in the 80s. With modern digressive dampers, new bushes/rubbers, latest sticky tyres its pretty good.
Mines used as a general runaround fun car, do 20k miles a year, use it on the school run, dump at weekend, bikes on back
I can't fault it. Cheap fun
