bland, simplistic, formulaic.....sometimes a nice glass of water is all you need.

grating ****e.......your opinion?

from a guy pretending to care about the rest of the world......i think you'll find he has given more to such causes than you or i

when all he really cares about is himself and his bank balance.......as opposed to us lot who are what? about to ship aid into Africa strapped to our spoilers?

how can SN exhibit chav teenager symptons and sound like your dad talking about music all at the same time?????

Maybe he has given more, but then maybe has more to give. As for 'us lot' in my case I don't, for instance, go around writing songs about the plight of the homeless and then threaten to take off at the first sign of a quasi-socialist government appearing - somewhat hypocritical I think. Remember Tiggs not everyone on here is the same - you have little or no idea as to what charities I might or might not be involved with for instance.

Anyway maybe you're a fan of his or maybe you're just playing Devil's Advocate - either way you're as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

Phil Collins is a nice guy, albeit one who makes records I don't especially like. He wears his heart on his sleeve a bit much, perhaps, but he's given millions to charity. OK, as a percentage of his wealth it may not be much, but it's still something he's done which he wasn't compelled to, and for that he should be given credit.

"Poor little millionaire", you may say "trying to think of ways to spend his money". Better, perhaps, than Mick Jagger, the legendarily tight-fisted and truly undertalented yet lionised old tosser. And perhaps more deserving of public sympathy than, say, Elton John, who's given money to charities but stuck most of the GDP of a medium-sized country up his nose, has never made a good record - reaching an all-time nadir with his ode to stupid non-seatbelt-wearing Sloanes - but is somehow loved by all.

Phil Collins' only crime is that his songs aren't great. Can you think of anything Macca's done post-Beatles that was worth recording on anything other than a home cassette player? Or anything Rod Stewart's done in the last 20 years? Ditto Clapton, Page/Plant .......

Moose,

So you don't like the Beatles or the Stones, but you do like Phil Collins - are you deaf?

You'll notice I said I didn't particularly like Phil Collins' output? It's bland MOR, but no better or worse than, say, The Corrs.

I like some of the Stones stuff, but nothing recorded after about 1980 (maybe earlier) is even halfway memorable. And no, I don't like Jagger.

As for the Beatles ... well, some of it was OK (though before my time) but perhaps an albums worth, no more. Let It Be, for example, is so extraordinarily overrated it's almost laughable, and the reverence attached to Lennon is unbelievable. I can't think of more than two or three of his solo songs I'd want to hear more than once, and the less said about Give Peace A Chance, the better.

Sorry dude, but PC is waaaay better than The Corrs - at least PC doesn't (and couldn't) rely purely on looks/image to sell (totally moronic, sh1te, formulaic, verse-chorus-verse-chorus) records.

As for Stones and Beatles - could not agree more! Elvis I could understand but Lennon IMO didn't write even a half-decent song.

Elvis didnt even write his own songs, he was the original formulaic pop star puppet.

Sorry mate I was only teasing. Agree about Lennon and the reverence thing - strange isn't it?

And you're right, early Stones is the only way to go.

Anyway enough of Jagger, Lennon, Elvis let's get back to Phil 'I've got a social conscience, honest I have' Collins

Oops! Even so he still came across as the consumate performer and his delivery of the material is probably still second to none IMO - that being my point.

I am old enough to say I saw Genesis with Peter Gabriel still singing. One of best concerts I have ever been to (and I have seen most of the earlier groups)!!
Give Phil Collins his due as a phenomenal drummer.

Saw Genesis with Phil Collins as lead and they were superb. Bet half the posters on here never heard of Genesis anyway as they're just young pups.

At least he managed to write, play and perform his songs which is something very few of todays so-called artists can do.

Compare Collins to more modern day icons. No contest I'm afraid.

Nah, thats why John Lennon and Paul Mccartney could sit down and write a song in 10 minutes and earn more money from that song, that any of us would see in a life time, and Phil Collins is a bloody good song writer and performer, sadly some of you can't see it
Cheers

He's a damn good drummer with a very distinctive style. Here wrote on or two great songs (Another Day In Paradise) and had a cracking hit with Phil Baily (Easy Lover). What's the problem? - apart from his potato headed appearance of course.

Cool

As for the John Lennon and Paul McCartney thing - without McCartney there would have been no Lennon. The reverse is *not* true. Paul McCartney is a uniquely talanted individual and would have risen to prominence with or without Lennon's 'help'.

Have a good listen to Paul McCartney - Ram released after the Beatles but before Wings to hear just how good his writing and arranging really is. It's a masterpiece.
