Scoobynutta555,

You were very quick to run Paula Radcliffe down with for making money out of sport with her past extreme successes.

Will you now feel the same way about Kelly Holmes since she is in the starting straight to make some £5 million?

I say good luck to them both, but you seem to think it is wrong for them to be in that position. Or is it alright for one but not the other?

Les

Plenty of armchair supporters posting sh1te...any of you knockers ever competed at any athletic event ever...I very much doubt it?

She pulled out because she was f*kin knackered...it's not a matter of 'quitting' it's a matter of being physically unable to continue. If she hadnt pulled out, she would likely have done irrepairable harm...marathons have that effect, I have seen promising middle distance runners have their careers ended early by over-stretching themselves in a marathon. I dont believe she should have run the 10k, but she desperately wanted a medal for her, and her supporters...she tried, and the marathon had taken its toll

And before you ask, I have run a marathon (3h 15...pretty crap...but not bad for a sprinter), and have trained for a number of years with one current olympic track medallists, as well as with a number of other world/olympic/commonwealth medalists.

I guess I'll just forget the fact that I used to run for my county regularly finishing yes FINISHING cross country events. I ran in the schools championships for 2 years. And at county level averaged a finishing position of 6th place out of approx 200 enterants.

On the track I ran 800 and 1500 metres for my town. Along with other sports I did at the time, swimming and running, I don't recall never not finishing a race (and at the same time letting the team down) because I wasn't going to finish in the top echelons.

Id give one of my favoured limbs to represent my country at the olympics.
Id also give my dying breath to make sure I finished.

I wouldnt (as Paula herself has since said) drop out because ,"if theres no chance of a medal then its not worth continuing"
terrible attitude and in ten years time you can see the scoobynet threads about the state of youth today, wont finish anything!

Entering the 10,000m took courage, definately.
but a distinct lack of realism, she should have just accepted her body couldnt do it.

did you hear that Paula has since started carrying a bag of fun size snickers for lunch...
no way she could finish a whole marathon.
