best engine noise (this will be interesting ;-) )
assuming you mean a STANDARD exhaust system that comes with the car, once you flick my M3 (e46) into sports mode, it sounds better than any standard exhaust on a scooby, Can't comment on any other cars.
Sounds way better than my M3 (e36) and the MY00 I had
Back then I stuck a full scoobysport system on the MY00 and fell out with my neighbours :-) but it was worth it!!

This is absolutely top ... I've heard this bike in the metal and it's unbelieveable.

Honda's 1966 RC149, a 125cc 5-cylinder 4-stroke racer which won the 125 World Champs that year. 33+bhp at 20,200rpm.
Car-wise, a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T with the 427 Hemi. If you stand behind it inbetween the two exhausts, it sounds like it's got twin engines

Anyway, I think a few mentioned in this thread should be on the list!!!

Edited to add: I had an M3 Evo with scorpion exhaust system and custom intake and it did sound pretty sweet! The M5 also deserves a mention with a modified exhaust system. The stock exhaust mutes the engine badly, but open it up and that V8 sounds incredible, especially at high RPM!

Induction is carbon isn't it?
To be honest I don't think any of those are the best sounding.
Murciellago, Pagani Zonda - they sound awesome for current production cars. SL55 Merc does too, most TVRs sound great. Westie XTR2 sounds pretty fooking awesome and scary from the cockpit - hard to beat the sound of a throttle bodied Busa engine at 10k revs, 18" from your head

I remember the BRM V16 at Silverstone at its first race when it twisted the drive shafts like barley sugar when the starting flag dropped. BRM used the wrong material to make them. It went alright in practice though.
The engine sound was truly amazing, you could hear every gearchange as it did a full lap.
I also remember Raymond Mays doing a demonstration lap after it was no longer eligible for GP's. He was getting on a bit then and every time he put his foot down coming out of a corner, the rear wheels kept spinning halfway to the next corner.
Truly incredible machine!
My own racer used to sound quite busy too, I used to wind it up to 11.5 K under pressure

A 215mph flyby in a Nissan Skyline GTR 34 V-Spec II. Tuned by Top Secret with 1015bhp flying thru the Bayshore Expressway tunnel towards Yokohama. Sounds like oh sounds like nothing on Earth. Trust me I have heard it.
Erm Kindah like a Podracer I guess, just to be silly. We were doing 80 in a S15, may as well be going backwards.

Fit the Porsche Sports Exhaust system to a 996 and it totally transforms the car. My neighbour has one and it sounds great when he fires it up in the morning - just like the Porsche Carrera Cup racing cars
The Lanica Stratos rally car I saw (and heard) at the German Rally is pretty fab too

All the listed cars sound fantastic but I`m another fan of the sound of a V8 (with open headers preferably). So, out of the list I`m gonna have to go for the Ferrari instead (that high revs scream sounds amazing)
None of the above...
The best automotive engine sound to this particular set of ears could really only be heared back in the 1960s. Top of the list ... a 'works' MV Agusta GP machine ridden by the likes of Surtees, Hocking, Hailwood, Agostini and all, closely followed by the 'works' GP 4 and 6 cylinder Hondas of Redman, Hailwood et al. Best car sound, again from the 1960s, the "Breadvan" Ferrari and their other works Le Mans sports cars...exquisite sounds.... back in those non-namby-pamby days, induction venturi and exhaust manifolds (often one complete pipe assembly for EACH cylinder) were really tuned with open megaphones to produce really beautiful automotive sounds.
Another superb "Transport" sound: As a very small boy back in the 1950s, I remember standing on Tamworth Low Level Railway station as the Mid-day Scot went through at speed pulled by a Coronation Class Pacific locomotive "City of Bristol". With eight power pulses for each revolution, at speed those exhaust beats merge into a most beautiful sound rarely heared from a steam locomotive. Many years later, speaking to retired locomotive drivers who actually drove those Coronations, all told me they were never able to get the things flat out anywhere ... railroads in this crowded island were just not long or straight enough. Even so, they didn't hang about. Unforgettable experiences for a small boy in post-war years impoverished 1950s Britain .....
Before my time, Italian motorcycle makers MotoGuzzi introduced a 500cc V8 for the Grand Prix in the mid 1950s..... never saw or heared that ... but I have a recording of it .... superb!
Modern machinery are far too suppressed for induction and exhaust notes to resemble anything like those delightful sounds of bygone years... Yes, they really were that good.....
So when some old fogey goes on about those good old days ..... believe it .... and you could do 100+ mph with the Police waving you by... just imagine that today ....
Youngsters today ... dont know theyze born ...

Can I suggest a Lister Storm GT car?
Remember a pair of them testing during a track day at Donnington Park. Stood on the pit wall with them going full bore bore down the straight - amazing and bloody loud!
