i remember coaching a kid that was 8 and looked like a mini lee haney!
Fair enough, i've not had that kind of exposure. But i'd be *amazed* if swimming was the one athletic event that blacks were unable to excel at. We'll see, but i know where my money would be...

I remember seeing that greek guy at the last olympics and thinkin "wow a white guy winning the 200m!" but now I guess we know why.

However plenty of the african-american-caribbean-etc folks are taking performance enhancers too....perhaps with some races the drugs work better?

And the comparative lack of prize-money as an incentive of course, Tiggs...

I've seen plenty of good sunny summer days here and seen local kids skulking around the shadows smoking **** while a huge green is unused. it's telling that the only kids out taking advantage of the weather are asian kids playing cricket.
When I was growing up in Oz rain hail or shine we got outside and played any kind of sport.
If we're changing tack, then the perceived lack of sporting success is due in part to cultural issues but you have to remember that Oz has a far better sporting infrastructure than the UK and sees sporting success as a reflection of national esteem. They also spend far more as a percentage of GDP on sport than any other nation and you only have to look at the Institute of Sport to see where all the former Soviet Bloc coaches ended up.

This is why Australia punches far above it's weight in sport and if the UK was to do the same, given our larger population you'd be surprised how well we'd do. I remember when Gough Whitlam started the ball rolling 30 odd years ago and now look where it's got them. Just look back to the last Olympics when GB athletes finally had some decent funding from the Lotto and what a coincidence - we started to win more medals.

now that is a social thing in part. go to a kids gym class and 95% are girls to start with. You would have a job getting a young black kid along to a club where most are girls and none are black

Hmm...money works up to a point but it's also attitude. How many sports don't have any sports institute support and we have people at the top level of American sport....Basketball and Baseball. I find when you greet someone here if you get a reply then it's more along the lines of 'could be better' or 'not bad'. At home it's usually 'good' or 'fine' or even 'great'.

Mental toughness goes a long way. Lookit how old Timmy goes up and down like a roller coaster...actually look at most British athletes besides redgrave and that distance runner bird I can't remember her name....

HAHA - you ever rowed 2000m? Pretty explosive. 5-6 minutes of pure anaerobic power.

Just been talking to somebody who knows a lot more than i do on this.

Can anyone verify that black people's skin is physically different from white people's, in terms of its water retention abilities?

Being told this is a major obstacle to being effective in water. True?

Odd.
India just doesn't focus on Olympic achievement. They don't have any kind of infrastructure to nurture talent either. The biggest problem the Indian media point out is that corporate sponsorship is very hard to find outside of Cricket.

China on the other hand has worked very hard to achieve medals in the Olympics, more so I suspect because they're a communist country and like the former Soviet Union believe excelling at sport reflects well upon the ideology of their government.

And a spot more googling provides

"It's really hard for minorities to get the facilities. It's a very expensive sport. My goal is to get more pools built." from the BBC
