Only a bit of canoeing to be fair but loads of nights in hammocks with creepy crawleys for company ....

Anyway just to get you monkeys back on topic again I still say a well driven cup would keep a new age WRX at bay easily through the lanes and probably do the same with a classic too ...

Does this mean that all the boy racers, joy riders and thiefs have got it wrong. They pinch Scoobs because they are quick or so we thought. Also will this mean insurance companys will lower our premiums. We are misguided people. 16 days to go.

Same goes for any well driven sports car. Even a well driven Astramax van. Some of them drivers must have no fear what-so-ever

Got a 182 and in day to day driving its gutless compared to a Scooby. Maybe in a straight line drag the Clio is Ok, but I know that I will not overtake in the Clio where I would in a Scooby. The power band is narrower than Kate Moss's wrist.

I have a MK1 172 and a WR1. To get the most out of the Clio you have to be viscious with it and red line it in every gear. If you do then they are incedibly nippy. I don't think I would get away very fast in the WR1 on a tight twisty back road from a well driven 172. Mind you on longer sweeping curves the extra power of the Subaru would see off the Clio, as would a straight line drag. The main problem with the WR1 in the drag is getting just enough revs. Not enough and it bogs down really easily, tooo much and you fry the clutch!! I think it's a little sad that we are comparing a £15,000 Clio with a +£22,000 car. Considering the price differential I think the Clio is a cracking little car and great fun to drive. Don't knock it.

Well you'd hope so when a clio costs £13k off the production line, and STI is pratically double the money! Very good for the money though. Westies better value though

Cant be arsed to go through every page :boring:

The best time the modded clio managed was 14.1+.

Anybody who can half drive can consistantly launch any classic scoob in 13s (inc 208bhp uk cars).

Dont see the point. The clio driver beat the (rubbish)scooby driver(with fluffed gear changes). The modded clio is not faster than any classic scoob. End of.

BTW my lowly powered UK classic with de-cat and map ran 13.4s with a cooked clutch...on my 1st visit!

Not knocking the 182, thats why I bought one. As you correctly point out you need to wring its neck to get any performance. I'd also agree that on a tight twisty road it would give an Impreza a hard time.

Comparing a Scooby to a Clio is a bit silly. I still dont think a Clio can live with a Scooby in the mid range, which is where most of us need solid power.

After reading through this, there are some valid comments and some pointless arguements. So what if a clio beet a scoob? Does it matter - apparently to some people it really does! You can't compare the two cars - they are in different classes. I can load my waggon up with a two weeks of camping gear, drive (confident that the car will not fall to pieces) to the south of France (matching the Km/ph speed with M/ph if I so wish) in comfort. Then have a sports car to take advantage of the luvly roads once there.

Would you want to drive 1000 miles in a clio? Would anyone?

Yeah, MPG ain't too bad over a distance at cruising speeds. Was getting 350 miles out of a tank while driving to SOF last year.

"Would you want to drive 1000miles in a Scoob?"

Do this and more at least 3 times a year in my classic Impreza. It's comfortable and able to keep up with the general flow of traffic believe it or not.
The only downside are the tank refills every 300 miles or so otherwise it would be a great motorway car.

The Clio (brothers 172)is noisier and less able to deal with road surface imperfection than a scoob and is thus a much worse motorway car. Better mpg though.

Been in a mates 172 on the motorway, and it's one of the most noisey and rattley things I've been in. Glad it was for only 10 miles.

Than a Clio 172 for sure, as is your 944 turbo, the scoob is also faster than a Clio Sport (any variety) in most situations. It also carries more payload, is more reliable and costs more to buy run and insure.

Not sure what's so "lol" about the comments of motorway cruising, someone said "would you want to do 1000 miles in an Impreza" the answer is "yes"- it's quite well suited to the dual role of cruise and bruiser.

As we are going off topic I reckon the Clio would win the race to see which vehicle ended up back at the dealers undergoing warranty work and also the race to the scrapyard!
Nice quick little car though and when bought from a Supermarket 12K for a UK sourced 182 with cup spoiler and suspension is a bargain (guess what car my girlfriend is getting!)

The "lol" comment was that after all the "twisties" and "wet roads" and "real world" driving that the Impreza is apparantly so good at, you end up arguing that it is a better motorway vehicle! I don't doubt it either!

I haven't ended up arguing anything, I'm just stating the facts as I see them. I haven't talked about wet roads or twisties. You must be confusing me with someone else.
I will say though that from my experience a classic Impreza (even a standard UK car) is better in almost every respect than a quick Clio as you would expect from a car costing 8K more.

BTW the Girlfriend has a 182 with all the goodies on order right now, so I'll be able to give a more informed opinion in 4-6 weeks.

Yes! Went to Scotland for the weekend (friends wedding) last year - 488 miles each way!
Took wifes Clio for fuel economy (which was good - 37mpg at an average speed of 88mph.
- Never again - it was noisy - uncomfortable and twitchy at high speeds ..... sod the fuel consumption - my 03 WRX is almost silent at 100mph
