I'll not disagree that for a new car, the clio is argueably the best value option around just now.

Default hmm too old for this lol

Yo all...

I should really know better than to reply to this - ya know, family man and all that !!

I have a MY04 WRX PPP and i have posted before about the car and why I love it and why I bought it over a 10 year old modded WRX, new STI, new WR1 etc ... thats old news....

I have never been beaten by the following cars ( honest)...

911 turbo
Nova (modded in some way)
Evo 6
Clio sport
F 355
330 csi ...

why - ? cos I have not raced them !!

I enjoy the WRX because.....forget the bollocks about new WRX are crap or what ever..... its a fast car .. OK??? Its fast .. got it ?

not as fast as many - but faster than most ....

It holds the baby, it goes to the dump with rubbish, it goes on holiday with four people .... it sounds BETTER than most cars I have driven ....

********************

I'm not into racing - but I am into life (and keeping it). .... I'm an average driver. A clio might be faster ... fine.... but in real road conditions if we are both racing on a carriage way and the clio wants to get into the left hand lane in front of me .. then it can. The reason being that if I hold out then both of us are going to come to some grief (perhaps)..... there is so little in it that the 'crazy' driver will win....... its different for a 911 turbo ... it will gain enough to 'safely' go in front of me and pull in ....

********************

It seems to me that many of us are unable to compare like with like. Its all about speed. The clio is lighter and smaller - sorted, there is nothing more to be said ...

my car might well **** over a Bentley Turbo (say 0-60) ..but the Bentley comes in at over 2 tonnes, 150K and only the best sportsman av em ... so what am I proving then ??

***************

So . here ends a ramble .... I love my car ... its BLOODY fast OK ... but I also love the family, the baby ..... I hate the mortgage, but I love the wine, I play the guitar ... I love my job ..... I love a good old '****' with the wife (yes it still happens ! ) ....

the car is not the be all and end all for me .... and therefore it pisses over everything (if ya get what I mean) ..

Nice results for the Clio and it was convincingly better than the Scoobies.

However, you are comparing what looks to be a well setup and driven Clio against what look like pretty badly setup and driven Scoobies.

My first and only event at Crail (having done one ever 1/4 mile timed run previously in another car last year) with my Scooby running standard engine internals and bolt on modifications is also silver but did low 12s at 121mph, and is an also ran compared with the best UK Scoobies now. I am only an average driver with only four trackdays under my belt and this is my first car over 128 BHP...

So nice results, you convincingly beat a few rather poor Scoobies. Pick on something more interesting next time, otherwise it will be like last time I was at Crail - no one but the R1 would go next to me

John do you not have like 400 hp tho?

The red Scooby on the first run got a 1.9 60 ft and saying the guy can't drive just sounds like a convenient excuse to me, along with "rather poor Scoobies". Face facts a 215-240 hp Scooby is going to seriously struggle against a Clio Cup with some cheap mods on it. Also I thought taking on a Impreza WRX on the 1/4 mile strip was "something more interesting" but obviously not.

you never know what you are racing on the 1/4 mile,I have been beat of a corsa and a rover before, maybe thats why i like the sport so much, you can take a pile down to the strip and embarass a load of people in your shed,I would not mind doing this myself! My best for the 1/4 is 14.3 on a very hot day at scooby shootout for a standard 97 turbo, if it was colder and my starts were more harsher this would have come down a tad. I did not think it was worth braking the car for a little bit faster time as it only a bit fun.Just watched the videos on this subject and have got to admit that the scooby drivers for the vids were pants they seem to hit a brick wall going into the gears and kangaroo up the run way,my lass in her bravo would beat the white one.Thats a fast clio though,I got to admit it.

In standard form or badly modified form - as so many are, Scoobies are not quick at all, Clio Sports should be able to keep up or beat them. There are a lot of poorly modified, poorly maintained examples about with wildly unrealistic power claims, particularly old WRXs now they are so cheap, there are some real sheds about. The range of ability from the worst to the best is huge. Beating a Scooby with a similar PWR and no lag on a well modified hot hatch is not that surprising really.

If it wasn't for the modification potential of Scoobies, there is no way I would have kept it this long, they are far too slow.

Chucked an old fridge freezer in my Wagon today and took it to the local tip. Had to go see the attendant to sign it in (What!) and couldn't get away - kept me talking ages about Scoobs and how he and his son loves them.

I thought it was funny considering it had a 6ft+ fridge freezer in the back (how many other cars can turn up like that and get so much attention) - do that in a Clio.

Plus it's a JDM so 250PS.

Did I see right on the 2nd video that the time was 17.78? Damn I could do that in the missus Beetle lol

That was the time for the previous car, you will notice the silver one brakes in the first run vs me about 3/4 up the strip (***** - cant take a beating!) The second run he was very reluctant to pull up next to me but when he finally did I slapped him again.

I find it amazing that a light FWD drive car with that power can beat a 4WD from start. I know launching mine isn't easy and I can certainly smell the clutch afterwards - but get it right and it is awesome. Get it wrong and it's awful - as I've found a few times pulling out....

Would love to have a go in a Clio though....

Interesting comment - from a fast car lover, or someone that likes mods, or someone who drives a 911: I can perhaps see your point ....

However, I can not really see how the standard WRX , MY04 for example, is far too slow? I my book any car which, for example makes 0-60 in 6 or less (yes I know its not just 0-60 that matters) it pretty fast compared with .. what???? 90% of cars on road ?

Granted, standard WRX compared with a WR1, F355, 911 turbo might be 'slow'.

But a standard WRX compared with a clio sport, a 147, a octavia turbo, mondao man, BMW (< 330 csi), and most other 'bog standard cars' is going to be 'fast'.

And I perfectly accept that a modified saxo for example (I had a standard VTS some years ago ) may walk over a standard WRX. However if I ever got grief from such a driver who said they had 'beat' me I would simply shake their hand, then remind them I have a large house, a wife, a baby, a wall of expensive guitars, drink fine wine, am 'old enough' to hold me drink, am successful at work and so on ......

On the track one can compare one car with another ... on the open public road its a less valid comparison. Some people are just into cars 'its their life' - good luck to em. Others want a 'fast car' to go with everything else they do in their life.

With Scoobs (and a lot of other marques I guess) why do owners feel the need to BS so blatantly about power claims. Ultimately they always end up with egg on their face, but never seem to learn and move from one car to another bragging ridiculous power.
Was an STI V on Ebay last week - had had an engine rebuild, std capacity, no ECU work, std turbo, IC - std everything basically - guy was insistent it had 365hp.
I'd much rather play down power......

Still, back to the post, Scoobs are slow

Clio cup is a very good car, weighs a lot less than a scoob, I think the cup is only 950kg or so, so almost 2/3 the weight of the bugeye. Plus no turbo lag, great chassis etc. The only thing that lets it down is the small size and passenger comfort etc, but then if you have been in my car you would think the Cup was comfortable!

As you keep harking on about... new car, warranty, blah d bleeding blah... you are comparing the best that renault (clio) has to offer against an old scoob, in which you generalise as all subarus. If you put it up against a newish 03/04 model which are faster than the 00>02 models, you be in for a shock let alone a new STi which would probably make you look rather silly indeed. and why do you keep harking on about your 944 turbo as your best car... nobody gives a shi7. Or is the porker forums that boring you have to talk about it on other forums to get noticed.
The renault clio is a great little car, a fun car, but doesnt offer the practicality that some people need. Hence like I stated before some people need 4 doors and want performance and the New scoobs offer just that.
And as this thread started out “A lightly modded Clio”... - well a lightly modded Subaru (new - as the clio) would be better option for me.

I remember a post a while back about 0-60's and everyones arguement was that the 1/4's were a better gauge of overall performance. Now it seems that the 1/4's do not apply or the driver was rubbish. Does it matter that a Clio had the better time ? The number of people abusing the clio, as a shed, its French, cheap crap etc etc is a bunch of sour grapes. It seems that if the Scoob is rated below anything a 20 page thread breaksout. This BBS attracts so many people from a varity of motoring backgrounds that is of great benefit for balanced discussions and information but WHY do so many Subaru owners defend their cars as unbeatable. As for the constant reminder of the "Twisties" their are a fair number of FWD and RWD cars that would not loose any ground in the dry (on the road) and wouldn't be much behind in the wet and not have to worry about lift off.

I thought the older scoobs were quicker due to less weight?

Get out of here are they! Same car, same weight, "few" more bhp...still slower than an older scoob. I had one I know!

The earlier scoobs were cool. Lighter, raw. You put your foot down and you thought this is fast!!

The newer WRX's are Zzzz Zzzzz performance but good as a day-to-day shopping run around I suppose.

Best scoobs?? Late nineties as they were fast AND affordable. New ones are only performance cars if they're the STi or other such motors.

WRX is like what the Impreza Sport was 8 years ago.....a "good car".

Jase03,

I think you need to take your Subaru blinkers off. And why on earth should non Subaru owners not be on this board. That's what you're implying isn't it?

If you put it up against a newish 03/04 model which are faster than the 00>02 models, you be in for a shock
No I think you'd be in for a shock. An 00/01/02/03/04 car once rolling is slower than a Focus RS/Alfa 147GTA/R32/330i - similar to an RX8/A3 3.2/Clio Cup/330d and not much quicker than things like a Golf PD150 or A4 2.5TDi.

Junior

Thats why I like the 944 Turbo. People look and think "my car's quicker than that"
We get that in the Westie too

If it wasn't for the modification potential of Scoobies, there is no way I would have kept it this long, they are far too slow.

the classic shape scoobies weigh 1235kg that equates to 174bhp per tonne for the uk versions (215bhp), thats quick by any standards!

Best scoobs?? Late nineties as they were fast AND affordable. New ones are only performance cars if they're the STi or other such motors.

WRX is like what the Impreza Sport was 8 years ago.....a "good car".
So why is it that the Classics (unless well tuned) cannot sit with my mildly tweaked 03 WRX (it's got a backbox and filter) - and I have at least 10 witnesses to that on here .....
- A "good" Car! It's nothing like a Sport you old duffer!

944 Turbo SE is the only one that stands up to any modern opposition, and an 03/04 Sti would have fun toying with it!

Bad driver perhaps?? One off examples can be had for anything beating anything.

About the 944 Turbo, thats gotta be the quote of the day. lol. Are we on a normal A road? Track? Twisties? Gravel? Ice? Mud? Snow? Uphill? Downhill?

Is the air temperature exactly 17.4 degress celsius to ensure peak performance? Is the STI suffering Heat Soak? Boost issues? Power drain? Is it your outlap or inlap? Is it running Optimax?? Have you openend the bonnet and scratched your head whilst shaking your head looking dazed and confused at the...err...windscreen washer reservoir? Is it raining?? Are those tyres new??
