IIRC it was based on a carrier (I seem to remember dog-tags being thrown into the sea?) The F14 is a carrier based plane with swing wings, while the f15 is land based.

I could be completely wrong I have not seen it for atleast 10 years

carrier trivia......one of the pilots who flew the real F14s in the flick has since risen to being in charge of the actual carrier in the film.

also- peter pettigrew was the real "viper" (he played charlies date in the bar) and he shares his name with a baddie from Harry Potter!!!! ohhhh!

Just to add the F-14 Tomcat (as in the film) was built by Grumman, whereas the F-15 Eagle ( the one Jeremy Clarkson threw up in IIRC ) was built by McDonnell Douglas.

The supposed Mig 28s were Northrop F5 Freedom Fighters

Now where are those Top Trump cards

I love Top gun - got it on DVD but still had to watch it on tv last night. Everyone who was a kid when it was released wanted to be a fighter pilot.

Even today those massive aviator shades and cheesy lines still bring a smile to my face. Pulp Fiction is a great film, actually one of my faves but so is Top Gun.

You have to admit that the flight scenes were very good for the time - Im suprised they never went for a sequel but maybe thats a good thing.

Simon.

I was based at NAS Mirimar shortly after they finished filming Top Gun.

A single British military pilot in California. It was a tough assignment but somebody had to do it

So did every pilot start use "she's lost that lovin' feeling!" line after the film?

"I hate it when she does that!"

I watched Pulp Fiction on my honeymoon in the states (Jackson Hole, Wyoming) and then went back to the Hotel and got medeival on her *** (well not actually her ***, but you get the point)

Top Gun was when I was at school, 'Take my breath away' at the school disco, unrequited lust for Louise Shipton, cruising around on my racing bike thinking it was a Jet Plane.
