Not directed at me but the roots of my pride in England are as follows

Our contribution to the world of sport ie inventing almost every game worth playing

Our bringing of civilisation to the less fortunate populations of the world (dodgy ground this one but I'll stick my neck out and say they are better off post colonialism)

Our great inventions

Our freedom of speech

Our fantastic beer!

Just as a matter of interest and I'm not trying to be funny here - what are the roots for your pride in being English?
Wow - you really need to ask??? Ok - here's a few reasons for starters:

The countryside
The VAST majority of the people
Our poets and playwrights - Shakespeare, Wendy Cope, Wilfred Owen etc
Our inventors - Clockwork radios etc
The lady with terminal cancer who cycled from Rome to Leeds
We have an enormously varied culture with people from all over the world living together and getting on brilliantly (despite the best efforts of the media!)
The music, the fashion, the parks
The right to free speech
The beer - the pubs!
The sense of humour
Crazy golf, fish and chips, roast beef!
Hell - even the weather!!

We have such a tremendous heritage and so many wonderful things which the popular media seem fixed on destroying.

If I wasn't proud to be English then I'd probably not be very happy living here!

Only the old fellas drink mild these days. I have to say though I have a weakness for some of the stronger Scottish ales like a nice 80 or 90 shilling.

What a load of old crap, let people fly plastic flags on their cars if they feel the need to be part of something, I wont be bothering, I will just support England in my own quiet(ish) way, I support the right for individuals to fly the flag without being dictated to by the do gooders because it my offend somebody not of this country who happens to live here, so what if I were Portugese, Spanish, Pakistani, American or whatever, I would quite like to see flags flying to remind me where I am and add a bit of colour, cant see who would be offended apaprt from PC white types who are always treading on eggshells in case they say the wrong thing which to me is probably as offensive as racism because it draws attention to a difference that most would not bother mentioning.

I am not proud to be English, British, White or whatever, I just am, I could have been born in Bangladesh or even Wales and feel the same, I wouldnt fight for my country, I would fight for my way of life. Dont get me wrong I like living here but I dont do the rampant patriotism thing as I haven much to compare it with, and besides those flags are so CHAV !!

Mr Working class done good in his 3 series, er isnt that a GERMAN car with two plastic St George flags waving in the breeze ?

Quite right! Most people never 'chose' to be British/English etc. they were just born or raised here. If they were born in Germany or Argentina or China or wherever they'd be 'proud' of that nation.

Personally I think there's no problem with a bit of national pride, bit of a laugh supporting the footy team etc. but you can only take patriosm so far. As a nation we've done some great things but to claim credit for these we also have to take responsibilty for the crap that we've done too (and 'we' as a nation have done some evil stuff as much as the next nation)

That would also have the benefit of removing many of these people who drive around with england flags on their cars (I love the way these threads come round full circle )

Calm down, calm down, these tacky flags will soon disappear when England fail to get into the second round.

I lost count of the amount of people who cried at us arriving in Sierra Leone telling us how we (Brits) had come to save them.. and rule them again.

1974 they got independance... few million dead later from civil war and a tag of one of the poorest countries in the world.. and you can see why.

What about the other 53(?) Commonwealth of Nations? All volunteer nations who are proud to be part of the old colonial advantages thay they reap today.. Pride for some, but real benefits for others that would see them disapear into anarchy.. Zimbabwe anyone?

Just make sure that if England do win, then dont bother going to the airport to welcome them home unless you are a fully paid up season ticket holder at some English club, or attend matches regularly. Otherwise you will be accused of not being a proper supporter and just going along cos you are jumping on the bandwagon - see this.

I shouldn't worry - no chance of that happening whatsoever unless awards are given out for having the most unruly thuggish fans of course

Not until they stop making prats of themselves and consequently the English nation.

As an aside good to see you're getting the hang of moving threads to the right forum at last.

Good on you,

tiggers.
