agreed WTF are people getting so irate with them? Would views be different if they represented a different country? I agree that the flag is probably flown by everyone from decent genuine fans and patriots to extreme racists but it seems everyone is generalising and taking a negative view.

Erm...

No need for insulting names because someone doesn't agree with you, it's not necessary

I think the general problem is the perception that the English flag has been hijacked by football hooligans and it's this that leads to the negative reactions.

Despite protestations to the contrary, there are too many fans who abuse the flag when following England. You only had to watch the news last night to see some muppet, pissed out of his mind chanting some crap about how the French would be Krauts if it wasn't for the English - surrounded by English flags and assorted heckling fans. Is it any wonder people react negatively to flags protruding from various bits of cars?

Good Point Mr Fair Sir. Only the other day I saw some lunatic in a Subaru driving like an idiot - swerving through the traffic, tailgating the car in front and gesticulating and shouting wildly at everyone who got in his way.

Obviously Suabrus are now the work of satan, to be driven only by downmarket individuals. I will be selling my WRX forthwith!

And just think - before the flags were everywhere, noone had any idea where all these hooligans were from!

to suggest that these items are launching themselves from their window positions and decapitating all sorts of innocent victims I would suggest is a slight exageration. I must of seen hundreds and never once have I seen one fly-off??? #cue all pillocks who want to suggest otherwise LOL#

Could you imagine somebody in Brazil in the middle of the World Cup saying "right everyone stop displaying their flags" PMSL
Thanks AndyBrew, my best-selling novel is due for release next May. There was a hint of sarcasm in my post, although I must point out that I never mentioned decapitation (unless you're including the dove metaphor there)!

I must also say I'm tired of political correctness and find it utterly absurd when people insinuate that those flying the flags are racist. I agree with Lord Shrek's view of the "PC Brigade". They are distinctly more irritating than the flags, it's a shame we can't lose some of those out of the window at high speed (in a cartoon/animated non-life threatening sort of way.)

Why do you have to have some obvious visible sign that you are proud of something?? Why do you "have" to display the St George Cross to show you are proud of England? Do you go round with a Flag on your car or wearing a T-Shirt with a picture of your kid on it because you are proud of them? I would have thought most parents would be considerably more proud of their kids than of England, maybe I am wrong.

LOL@ bungle drinking *****

Of course you're worthy, unless you're flying one of those tacky flags with England written across it.

Patriotism isn't about displaying some cheap flag every now and again, it's about pride in England, one of the best countries in the world IMHO.

England now and forever- and here's to stuffing the frogs on Sunday. Or at least drawing with them.

Same reason some people wear Tshirts with band names on. Or designer labels. Or even drive Scoobs and log onto SN. I think psychologists would call it needing a sense of belonging. Humans are essentially pack animals - we just tend to display it in different ways that's all.

If you dont like anything about our country, flag or customs why are you still here? there's always Cuba.
LOL, Krade, don't be a tit narrowminded gimp indeed

Have you no sense of humour? Its folk like you that can't see the funny side that cause all the tension (racial and otherwise) in the first place.

Oh, and in case you didn't catch on, I'm Scottish. Therefore the work produced by those you proclaim to be anti-british and ashamed to be English is all the funnier on this occasion.

Lighten up mate, you might actually find that life is more fun that way

Sorry, but these sort of images being beamed round the world are the reason why I am definitely not proud to be English. Still this is only the prelude to the main event of course - the ceremonial trashing of the bars and hotels and the England thugs vs. the police on the streets of Portugal.

I know it's not the real fans and I know it's only a minority, but this is what the rest of the world gets to see and associates with England.

Very sad.

Talking

Your point about racism and patriotism is even more ironic given that we Scotts are possibly one of the most patriotic nations on earth

Hell, half of America and Canada proclaim "roots" to Scotland

**** knows why, mind you, we're crap at everything - especially football..

So, let me get this right - the fact that the media seize on a few drunken nutters and flash their pictures around the world affects your whole sense of national pride...? Hmmmmm......the media are so well renowned for their balanced and unbiased coevrage of such things..... I'm not denying that holligans can get us a bad name - but they're really not going to affect any sense of pride I feel in being English!

I think the roots for my pride go a little deeper than a few drunks and a game of footie.....

No that is not correct. To be fair my sense of national pride is almost already completely eroded by popular English modern culture (don't ask me to describe it as I think you know what I mean). The problem is that the football hooligan thing is one of the few images of England that our foreign cousins rightly or wrongly regularly get to see hence their few of the English as a bunch of yobbish thugs always drunk and looking for a fight. The really sad thing is that if they were to visit any English city or large town on a Saturday night their view would only be reinforced.

Just as a matter of interest and I'm not trying to be funny here - what are the roots for your pride in being English?
