I agree Nick that prices are dropping across the board....my views exactly.
But to tar all grey imports are Japanese rubbish is incorrect. Plain and simple. There's good and bad in all of them.
IMHO the jap greys have lower milage than their UK cousins and better looked after too!!!
ho humm..
Gethin.

Well my car, according to the CAP black price guide is worth £13,500 (UK98MY, R, 97, 31000miles, 5dr). Paid £19500 for it back in Aug '98.
Didn't expect to £6000 in two years... Lost £0 on the Sport I had for the six months before - aaaahhh, those were the days of the strong Impreza market.
My supposition is that the market is now almost saturated and new model jitters. Leading to crap trade-ins prices.

No hard facts for you Gethin - just the words from more informed people than you.
Simple fact - loads of Imprezas about=greys not wanted .... market forces my man!!
The hard facts you seek will hit you come sale time - then you will see the mystery man from the east was right all the time :-)
Smile and enjoy your jap cars - I think they are great .... just not as great as a top price UK model !!

pslewis,
I do not want to gang up on you, or start shouting (this is not going to be easy) - but...
Your points about abused grey imports without a history are valid - abused uk turbos without a history are equally unwanted. But to say 'loads of Imprezas about=greys not wanted' is just wrong, because the grey car is not the same spec as the uk turbo. Those wanting more power, and not wanting to modify a car themselves, will be looking for a grey import.
And to say they are 'just not as great as a top price UK model' (finding it extremely difficult not to swear here) - rubbish - why aren't they? If they have been serviced and looked after as well, you're suggesting they were inferior to begin with, in which case you really don't know what you are talking about. Even if imports are selling for less second hand, I wouldn't care - they cost a few grand less when new.

Echo the worries re. scooby residuals. I'm trying to sell my 97MY Catalunya at the mo - immaculate condition with 70K on the clock. Accoring to SIDC, it should be worth "£23-£25K" but £14995 isn't attracting too much interest, apart from the daily 'we've found a buyer for your car, send us 10 million squid and you can have his name' phone calls. Strongly tempted to wrap it in cotton wool and wait until prices for the Cats creep up again!

As for the history. I found the previous owners details in the boot from Japan. In the hold where the jack is. There was a letter with his address on it. I wrote to him and he owned the car for 6 months before selling it to an agent who brought it over here. The car was then owned by the manager of a local garage until i bought it from him.
It was for sale at £17k with 20k on the clock and comparing it to all the others i saw, including the u.k ones, i believe I got a good deal.
The history thing is one of those things but i went out my way to dig up as much as possible on the car as I could. The Japanese guy who I wrote to in English (was a french teacher in Japan and spoke fluent English. He e-mailed me a couple of weeks after I wrote to him. I have sent him some pictures and he still loves his baby.
In fact, I might sell it back to him. Anyone got any boats I can borrow
