US Ship: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

CND reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

US Ship: This is the Captain of a US Navy Ship. I say again, divert your course.

CND reply: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course!

US Ship: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS NIMITZ, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW!!

CND reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

Y'know I was thinking of the same thing when I read it. Even thought id look on my mails when I'd got to the end of the thread. 25mins too late

Sorry to hear about the bad luck that everyone has had. Hopefully the costs of the cars will be paid up. But worrying that Lloyds may have a claim on some of it.

You know this just made my day. I was in fits of laughter, as were my colleagues at work. Cheers

I wonder if they ever recovered some of those 100s of new hi-spec BMWs and VOLVOS that ended up on the bottom in a similar incident a year or so back....

Default Black Armbands here

A mate and I have lost 2 EVO's! You may think that's not so bad for a Scooby owner however, we are only private individuals and only importing to fulfill our mad craving of eastern automotive delights

Some people drink their spare cash away we blow it on cars and usually they they are still there in the morning. We're both now taking up diving lessons so that we can recover the rare Evo RS components Seriously tho it's not funny ane we are pi55ed off!!

But you have to laugh! and be thankful that my Scooby wasn't on that boat!

Reminded me of the terrible incident back in the '70s when a light aircraft collided with a transport plane carrying Nissan spares and it rained Datsun cogs!

The ships insurers will certainly declare General Average but this will be indemnified by your marine insurance; you will only receive 80% of the cost of your vehicle though, less all carriage de-reg and port costs. If you used an agent to book carriage its highly unlikely that they will not have included insurance as the cost is low.

Like API David said; shipping is a right lark.

Another car carrier of similar size is currently being salvaged off Tokyo Bay in Japan. Again it contained Hyundai motor cars. Perhaps Hyundai cars will become rarer and be worth more.

From the news report ...

"Prior to the collision, warnings were given to the two vessels by the MPA's vessel traffic information service. The two vessels also communicated with each other,"

I can just see it now.

"Yes we can see you, you are coming right for us."

"OK don't worry we had our chief monkey work out that both vessels will pass within 1 metre of each other - nothing to worry about."

"OK agreed, we'll just steam towards each other as normal. 1 metre is fine."

Default UPDATE:-

We lost 2 WRX and 1 2001 STI7...

Yuwautotrade the main agent automatically insure all cars unless instructed to do so, only cost £10 per car with £250 access. Covers marine cargo + 10% for costs.

We have heard that the ship may not be salvaged as it is in deep water outside the shipping lane, so general average may not apply.

Just filled out the insurance claim form, let hope there isn't any snags!!

The most upto date info is from the Ship owners:-

I never realised ship sinking was so common!

I'll watch where I swim in future.
