Did you not notice (or just choose to ignore) the parts where I've said the reputation they do have (whether you like it or not) is mostly unjustified, should be no reason to put him off getting one and indeed it would be good for him to do his part to reverse the wrong reputation they have?

I'd love to hear your reason as to why a studded harness is better for the dog ffs

d.head.
i wasnt being agressive perhaps defensive this reputation you talk about, wheres this come from then?

(dont quote me on this) i heard from a friend whos a vet, the harness is better for their shoulders and breathing.

Our Spaniel has always been a bit funny with other dogs, cant be trusted off the lead when other dogs are around so that trait isnt unusual, just a Staff ould do more damage, any damage is not acceptable so I exercise caution.

Alas, sounds delightful, in fact like having another kid, will check them out.

Thinking about aggressive dogs, my mums Chihuahua was the most aggressive dog I have ever seen, wouldnt let anyone touch him apart from my mum, attacked anybody who came round, was fun fooling him that it was my mum stroking him when sat on her lap, if he found you out he would chase you for ages, intent on revenge, all the time you end up laughing and he gets you, right nasty bite on him as well for a small dog, that was only part of it, he was like a Komodo Dragon in that his bite was infested with Bacteria and Halitosis.

I know about about Staffs, I lived in Feltham for 4 yrs
Some staffs can be aggressive and i agree, but i certainly dont find them more aggressive than other dogs.
There are many dogs which are aggressive ie labs, gsd's,yorkies, springers etc etc etc and i could go on all day naming other breeds.
Anyway the only reason i replied to your post cos you put they will attack another dog which is clearly not true.

Btw harnesses are recommended for staffies as they are known to be big pullers and of course it doesn't impede their breathing like collars can and i reckon,if there was a pulling championship for dogs, they would win hands down.

The dog in the film Turner & Hooch is a French Mastiff. When I saw the film I thought is'nt it great what they can teach that dog to do. Now I realise that the sh*t that dog got up to during the film is what they do normally.
Saying that mine is hilarious. You keep going to tell him off and then burst out laughing. Like when I was trying to paint the house and each time I went up the ladder he grabbed my shoes. Eventually lost patience & started chasing him to put him in. He runs round the house grabs the paintbrush and runs inside - tail wagging all the time. Eventually we had to bribe him to get the brush back without him painting the inside of the house red cedar.

**** owners who don't know how to look after any dog, let alone a Staff. Like I said before the one's who get them (or Rotties, GSDs etc etc) as macho statements, the ones who actually enjoy the fact they've not socialised their dog properley and it's got problems with aggression as a result.

(dont quote me on this) i heard from a friend whos a vet, the harness is better for their shoulders and breathing.
Yep, but not studded particularly

Like I said they're lovely dogs, he just needs to be aware of the reputation they have got, make sure he does his bit to reverse that and hopefully it'll be that little bit further on to more people realising they are great pets.

I got a staff off someone on here and its a great dog needs attention and to play but has loads of character and no problems what so ever with other dogs. Its also solid as a rock jumped out of a car a forty mph last week and hardly a scratch. It loves to go out in cars and is a top guard dog in that it has a bark that sends shivers down your spine but is never the slightest bit aggressive towards visitors delivery men etc.

Thumbs up good choice

Hi new to this scooby net ..

Have keept staffs for over 17 years ... i have had 3 ... 2nd one died @ 9 months old ... 1st one she was 14 when she left us ... and still have one she is 8yrs...
all what every one has said is so true ... amazing with children

They are a peoples dog ...and its a good idea to have some1 about for the 1st few months to avoid chewing ..

And only other issue is never do all the tugging on a rope, holding there body weight ... some here may say .. its never done my dog any harm ... but what happens if the dog does get into a scrap? it will have learnt how to hold on for dear life ...

They are powerfull dogs ...treat with "Respect"
I have always keept other larger breed dogs with my staffs.. they all have got on fine...

1 other thing i have found they are prone to running off as young dogs, they have zest for life..

Good luck, i am sure you will not be disapointed with choice of breed, most loveable..

i had my staffy from 5 weeks old till she was 8. i found her to be the most loyal and loving animal i have ever met.the only prob i had was her getting too humanised, she needed more attention than i had time to give

she was brought up in a happy lively household, and i would trust her with a new- born baby!!

as for meeting other dogs, staffs are great. they will bound up to another dog with no fear or agression, and always wanting to play.the do NOT attack other dogs, they will always turn their face from an agressive dog and will ony fight if attacked!!THEY DO NOT ATTACK OTHER DOGS, unless attacked first

sadly i had to re-home my girl to another scoobynetter who owned a spanial in february i did not have the time and energy to keep up with her. it broke my heart to do this as my dog was only half way through her life, but i did what was right for my dog

staffs have a massive love of life, especially humans and need a lot of love back in return, so if you are getting one, be prepared for about 15 years of MADNESS, in the nicest possible way

good luck,...........and a word of advice...........buy a sensable harness and it will be like taking a feather for a walk

I chose my words very carefully, I said they would be aggressive towards other dogs, I did not say that would attack other dogs.
I agree all dogs can snap at other dogs, but if you read the history of the Staffy you begin to understand why they are good natured towards humans and "aggressive" towards other dogs...

It was me that had sarasquares dog btw and its having a great time charging around fields after geese etc. It has had one or two rucks with the spaniel all of them started by the spaniel but no serious injuries. TO either dog.
I can't speak for all staffs but twiggy is the least agressive dog we have ever owned it has no agression what so ever towards other dogs but how this applies to the whole breed I don't know. We have friends come round with their dogs and they run around and play together no problem.

I hate Westies, I know their game, look cute but are pure evil, a mate of mine used to have a huge (by Westie standards) male and it just used to growl and snap all the time, therefore for me they are more aggressive than Dobermans as I have never been bitten by a doberman, bruised, battered, slobbered on and mounted but never bitten.
we have a westie, its never botherd the kids, but it did snap at my ex birds face for no reason (which could have been a bonus because i now hate her with a passion )

ours is just plain daft, hates cats, but wouldnt bother with kids, on the other hand, a mate had a westie and his was blatently the king of the household, it had no fear at all and would attack anybody for anything, they got rid of it when the daughter was pregnant, the new owners reported that the dog was racist ??? and that it wasnt very happy amongst anything at all, so they were wanting rid of it as well.

wouldnt recomend them for kids (although ours is fine)

Lot of passion on here, I can seee both sides, any Dog like any person deserves some respect and a full understanding of their temperament, you cant take any chances with dogs, especially something as powerful as a Staff, only small but power to weight wise its Caterham R500 territory, Even Labs and Retreivers can be aggressive in the wrong hands so anything with 'terrier' in its name needs a little more attention and care, I still want a Staff as there has been no negative feedback but I think I need to let my kids get a bit bigger, the youngest is only five so I think he needs to be about 8 before I consider it really, and I still have the wife to convince.

Thanks for all your replies, confirms the Scoobynet creed of being first and foremost a car BBS but its real purpose being a an animal lovers Board.

Attack, aggressive theres not much of a difference IMO,especially when dogs are involved and as i already said, yes they have a reputation, but it doesn't mean they are all going to be aggressive towards another dog.

I leave a open invitation to come and see my old girl and perhaps i might change your views towards staffs

I too have a staffie. Odin is 1 year old, and he's gorgeous, mad, daft and soppy. He's just got over the "running off" stage, and is sooooo loyal. He goes to my mum and dad's every day whilst me and the other half are at work, and bearing in mind that they are in their 70's, they take him for a long walk every day. He doesn't pull with them, and knows that they are too old to play rough with him. Play time is only at home.

He's great with kids, and like someone said earlier, he knows that he has to be gentle. He will protect those who he knows, and he has NEVER been agressive to any other dog. He just wants to run around with them and play. We come across a rather nasty little terrier sometimes on our walk, and he just looks at it and turns away. I'm sure he'll never start or finish anything.

Is someone can tell me how to post pictures, I'll put a couple of him up.

My advice, get a staffie, you won't be disappointed, lonely or unprotected as long as he/she lives.
