Dad's done a similar thing. Neighbour cleared out her garage and handed all the BBQ stuff to us, so one evening when we were down at my parents, we decided to partake.

Mum & I set up the BBQ and start the charcoal burning and then in wades dad with BBQ Lighter Fluid.... Unfortunately the bottle was old, so the plastic cracked and sent fluid skooshing into the BBQ with resultant flames leaping towards my dad.

Quick hose down later and the paint has been flambeed from the BBQ, dad's slightly warm and the food has turned into charcoal lumps....

So we start again... MINUS the lighter fluid this time.....

After years of two-bob charcoal BBQs I invested in a Weber gas grill. The things chuffin amazin'. They come with bars under the grill so the fat drips off, vapourizes and gives you loads of the BBQ flavour.

Very good for cooking fish as it tastes lovely and you don't stink the house out.

Well I've got one of those big cement precast ones from a French DIY place, complete with chimney and food prep area.


I'm bringing another back for use over here when I next take the trailer.

Cost is about 2/3 of a smaller one bought here!

parents have a gas bbq. The gaspipe got disconnected from the bottle somehow & it shot across the garden & almost into the house wall

it was a joke, ok? i'm sure a man of your means could afford one of those "living flame" gas efforts.

'course i have central heating as well. i used to live in a house that was *soley* heated by solid fuel and i can assure you it was an utter PITA and you were cold 90% of the time for at least 6 months of the year.

i still love the look of an open fire, though. and on a cold evening, nothing (for me) feels better than sitting on front of a good blaze. actually, i don't have anything against gas bbqs either - i just enjoy the ritual of the charcoal thing.

I must admit i do miss my charcoal burner especially now i have my gas one, there is just so much fun in running for your life when the flicked match is just about to land on the heavily soaked in petrol charcoal then a huge boom and a mushroom cloud of flames and smoke billow up, irresponsible i hear you say?? what the hell if you know what to expect

We have a gas outback...use it pretty much all the time in the summer. Including my English Breakfasts

2 reasons:

1) It's creates less mess in the kitchen and is easier to clean (if it get's too greasy I take it to work and get the truck wash and steam cleaner on it )

2) It doesn't stink out the house with cooking smells

OK, you don't get the flavor, but it tastes better than grilled food - don't go into the physic of it should taste the same as grilled ...It DOES taste better

We do have a charcoal one somewhere, but it never gets used...why? Firing it up just to do my sunday breakfast, or a sossy sarnie for 2 or 3 people is a bit pointless and would take forever to heat up.

The charcoal one only comes out if we have a party in the garden and run out of space on the the gas one. But to be honest, it never gets used I just can't be bothered with it really.

Simon - get a Gas one - trust me on this - you will not know the difference in the taste of the food and you can get completely pissed and not kill anyone with

a) The stray flame scenario
b) undercooked chicked
c) heat exhaustion (once did a BBQ for about 40 people on the old charcoal machine - cooking for about two hours and my **** very nearly melted and I thought I had got a wonderful tan - I had infact been cooking all afternoon !

Admittedly with charcoal you're not gonna get the gas bottle bomb - but i think that was an exception

You will not regret the investment in a gas BBQ - unless it rains for the next 3 years

As stated before - we were all cavemen until the clever ones stopped being cavemen
