Sorry I used to the term loosely. I meant to say camera detector.

The last time I checked, the Valentine did not pick up KA band - some mobile cameras. Have they changed the Valenine now?

Sorry thats not right

Road Pilot and Micro Pilot only warn you if you are exceeding the speed limit

interesting that,

last time I checked origin had patented that feature, in which case they have either licensed the patent or the other companies are infringing.

Origin B2. Bought mine off ebay @ £329, so did several mates.

Snooper S4 is also good, but display isn't anywhere near as good as the origin.

Can't see how they could patented a feature like that IMHO

BUT ITS A GODSEND

Many a time had I sat 10 yards in front of a camera in a traffic Jam with my Road Angel going nuts

Road Pilot quiet as a mouse, In theroy of course you should never hear the road pilot

Yeh right

Phil

are you sure?

I looked at the road pilot,

Ability to set volume of audible notification

Ability to set contrast for the screen

Selection of MPH or KPH for speed readouts

Analog or digital speedo

Ability to enable or disable voice notification which will give beeps instead

Set time and the ability to select country and whether you are in daylight savings time

Option of selecting the language to be displayed on screen

Enabling or disabling of the Mileage Manager

Setting of Mileage Data Length (allowing for oldest data to be overwritten)

Ability to set warning distance on Speed Cameras and Waypoints

Ability to enable warning of directional cameras/waypoints if cameras are on other side of road

Ability to enable display of directional cameras/waypoints if cameras are on other side of road

Auto Ranging changing the range distance for notification depending on speed you are travelling at

Speed Sensitivity allowing you not to be notified of cameras if you are below the correct speed limit

Ability to set Early Warning gives you an extra audible warning when entering range

Early Warning Speed Sensitivity allowing to be warned early if you are exceeding speed limit!

Having looked at these features the closest thing I can find is the bottom one, which is not the same as not altering you if you are not speeding.

Origin b2
Autocar - May 28, 2003
Origin has placed the emphasis on subtle installation and the extra minutes taken to set it up are more than compensated for by the finished effect. The unit is slightly bigger than a pager and designed to sit on a holder like a mobile phone. It can be removed for security. The well sized LCD display is easy to read, displaying need to know information while the features are hidden yet easily accessed. The warning sounds grab your attention - it's very loud - and are graded according to whether you are over or under the limit . Every camera and speed was detailed correctly and satellite lock was constant. The speedo however, was slow to react to change.

I take it that it will be quick enough to react to the speed of a Smart Car? lol

Phil,

you can definitely patent that, trust me, I am a patent attorney

I can only assume they licensed the invention, either that or they failed to get the patent.

I'm planning to get a detector of some sort when the new car arrives. Was thinking of getting the Road Angel as can have it fitted by Subaru which is convenient for me.

However, I'm beginning to be swayed by the Road Pilot. Anyone know if this can tell you whether a speed camera is actually active or do they all do that? Just curious as I assume that if a speed camera is not active you don't get any warning but if that's the case how do you know the thing just isn't playin up?

You can tell I've not had a detector before eh!

It's simple, honest:

Best detector: Origin B2

Best detector with Nav: Road Pilot

Best non GPS: Valentine 1

Easy

Nope, not yet. My order is in at the Colchester dealer, second on their list. Last I spoke to them few days ago they had no details and were still saying expect car sometime late May or June.

Okay, I'm virtually sold on the Road Pilot judging by people's comments on this thread and others. Slightly confused though from stuff I have read on the Road Pilot web site in the past.

I didn't realise Road Pilot had NAV. Is this new or is there more than one version of the Road Pilot (ignoring the Micro one for now).

Does the Road Pilot actually detect cameras or does it work solely off GPS? Does it pick up someone standing on the side of the road pointing a speed gun at the car for example.

Thanks all.

WR1

All the GPS units have a database that stores where each camera is located. You updated the database via the Internet. They can't tell if the camera is active or not & they can't detect "safety vans". I understand that origin B is working on a detector that links to their GPS unit. This means in theory that if the detector picked up something, it would check the GPS database to see what it was likely to be.

So this is why so many people have two units in their motor then I assume. Would the best bet be then to have the Road Pilot GPS along with some sort of detector as well. If so, anyone got this set-up that can guide me as to the best way forward.

Actually, thinking back I remember a while back Phil Stephens posted a picture of his set-up of a Road Pilot and something else. What was it you have Phil if you don't mind me asking, and are you still happy with the set-up?
