Hi

If his suggestion was anything to do with the way the tracker transmits (I expect it is) then PM me as this is my area of speciality.

Cheers

PS - Dreamweaver - I have seen cars nicked with removable wheels - they use a set of mole grips

Not exactly comfotable though is it - in a choice between car with wheel and car without, they would take the wheeled one. Not sure how they get the maulgrips on though - with the wheel off, the circular bit is about 2" across. Must be big grips.

Yoza,

I got half way through the thread, read one of your posts that suprised me, sent you a PM, then rear the post about not sending you any PMs, DOH! I don't mind if you don't reply, though I would appreciate a reply if you get time.

From 32 PMs sent, Ive had none back expressing that this technique use is flawed.

Ive had plenty of 'feckin ells', and 'Well **** me', but no hard evidence of whether YES is can be done, or NO he was tellin lies.

Surely the tracking companies should have thought of this.

Sorry Im no good with names, but can the guy from the alarm fitting company who said he would check out the story, get back to me.

Cheers Yoza

Any electronic system is vulnerable to someone with the right knowhow and tools. It is therefore hugely important that you do not display anything which says what alarm/immobiliser/tracker/other security system you might have protecting your car. The thieving b@stards are getting more sophisticated, so don't give them a head start by telling them what you have protecting your vehicle. They know that insurance companies often insist on trackers, so don't advertise what you have or even which company fitted it. Their ignorance creates uncertainty in their minds and might make them think twice.

I guess the natural evolution of these things is to adopt military spec protection for electronic systems to resist the type of technique I'm guessing yoza is talking about.

Another step in the evolutionary war will be the introduction of biometric security systems, so a fingerprint/retina scan etc would be needed to verify your details before you could start the engine. If you intend travelling to the US after October this year then you will need a new passport which has a chip with your biometric data on it. So this type of technology is already here. Add to that a distributed security system so that the many chips around the car each have a piece of the security jigsaw and you have a system which is very hard to circumvent.

I'd recommend you guys have all the security you can afford fitted to the car, also give the installers time to install the units. Dont rush them......I was without my MY00 for 3 days sorting mine out.

A good installation makes all the difference!

A friend of mine had his Daimler nicked by a gang in north london. No fuss at all, they just turned up in a recovery truck and loaded it on. A copper passing didn't even blink, just had a laugh that it had in his mind broken down. He had the presence of mind to take the details of the truck.

Just a thought... and no offence intended.

How do you know the thread owner here isn't in fact the car thief looking for some advice on defeating the tracker system?????

I used to have a mini that I loved like my right hand. As it only cost me 80 quid I couldn't really spend 500 quid on an alarm (pre tracker and commercial immobs) - I got a switch plate with 12 switches - wired 4 of them up to vital electrical bits and then cross wired the other 8 so that the car would only start if all 12 switches where in the correct position. 4000 odd combinations shoul have slowed the ******* down - when they discovered they couldn't get it started they slashed all the seats, broke the windows and **** all over it. I had £100 excess on my insurance :bummer:

as far as removing bits - my m8 had a Nova - every night he removed the steering wheel and rotor arm. Car got lifted by joyriders who crashed and burned - When they put the guy out they found he had three steering wheels, a couple of dozen rotor arms, a selection of spark plugs, a few HT leads and a spare battery - when my m8 told me my first thought was - why did he steal all that stuff, but he pointed out that it was his toolkit

Surely with an ECU security must be easy! If the ECU won't let it go then it's going nowhere. (Unless it's towed) I honestly think the car manufacturers aren't bothered - lets face it - if a car is nicked thats potentially another they will sell.

If a manufacturers car has not got a good security then it will go into a higher insurance group

I just got this from www.thatcham.org

Thatcham’s role in vehicle security testing has also led to new vehicles with good security being rewarded through the group rating system. Security devices fitted as standard are reviewed against the pre-determined level of security required and the group adjusted accordingly. These include alarm/immobiliser systems, high security door and ignition locks, mechanical immobilisers, visible VIN and glass etching.
