I had a chat with a car thief today.

I believe that each device you have, simply reduces some of the risk of having you car knicked. An alarm, tracker, some kind of visual deterent, parking in a safe place when left, etc etc etc simply could mean that they move onto a different car.
At the end of the day, if they want it they can get it, so it is pointless kidding yourself that it is totally safe. What does worry me is where cars/keys are taken by force from the owner. Those kinds of thiefs need shooting.

Hows this for a country that has enormous crime rates especially Hi-jacks and car theft,in South Africa insurance on a Scooby is not that expensive because they never get stolen or hi-jacked.Criminals don't use them for other crimes hense no hi-jackings and the market for them in our neighboring countries is virtually non existant hense no theft. I personally think think its bizzare but hell I" not complaining!!!!!

The tracker monitor got my car back within 90 minutes of it being nicked using my keys nicked from the house yesterday, i then recieved another phone call today from tracker asking if i new my car was moving, it was on the low loader this time though!
Ok i don't really want the car back, but if these were fitted to every car, alot more of them would be recovered and our premiums would be cheaper!

I once had an XR2 nicked which had immobiliser, one of those yellow handbrake locks, and one of those long steering things that bend through the wheel.
No idea how they nicked it, no glass, no rubber etc.
Found the empty shell in Liverpool (sorry Yoza) 6 months later. Was nicked from Blackpool and was a mint 57k mile D reg I bought from my auntie (she had it from new). This was back in 96.

as to a PM on this, ignorance is bliss. I have enough probs sleeping as it is

You could have a device that 'senses' or 'detects' a tracker device to locate it. I assume it sends and/or recieves a signal which could be 'hacked'. A car is only so big and there are only so many places a device can be hidden.
By all means, make your car more secure, but as previously stated, the serious thieves will nearly always get your car. It's their 'living' so they aren't gonna stop just because the security is harder to brake. Might well stop many kids or joyriders though.
Needs tougher punishment. Especially as it's all usually part of a large organised crime, not just one bloke trying to deceitfully make a few bob.
Mk2 16V what? - I can only assume Golf. What else is there a mk2 16v version of? similar to referring a pug1.9gti as just 1.9gti I guess.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: hidden kill switch of your own design. It could be located anywhere and disguised and it would take them far to long to find and disable to be worth their while.

Dracoro - s'pose it could have been an Astra... But you're right, the Mk 2 16V Golf is the only 'Mk 2 16v' worth having or nicking...

I remember a device back in the early max power/fast car days (when they were good) called the interceptor or something.
It was a kill switch which you wired up to any screw or metal component in your car. To start the car, you needed your finger on said piece of metal which would complete the kill circuit using your body and allow you to start the car.
Always thought it was a good idea, as you could choose any dashboard screw.

My feelings exactly!
Tracker/RAC Trackstar.... its just makes your insurance company's life easy if it gets robbed. 99% guarantee to return it if it gets stolen.. but what if its been smashed up.... you'll probably loose any no claims you ever had for the repairs.
I've resided myself to the fact that once I need a tracker to get a decent insurance quote the scoob goes.
If my car got knicked I wouldnt want it back.

RichWalk - I know where it all is as I helped remove components and trim. Put it this way - compared to most installs - he tripled the lengths of wiring (having used identical stuff to OE) and we removed most of the interior to do it (I think that's all I can say). Put it this way - the transmitter is very cleverly hidden - I had to "hollow" something out to fit it .....

Like everything 'where there is a will there is a way' .I found my tracker in my old Subaru very easily.
The thing they do now is park the car up somewhere and go back in a couple of hours.I was in a pub in Preston Brook (Runcorn) when a Police car drove in and sat next to a 330 coupe BMW which was taken in an armed raid 3 hours earlier. The Policeman had no idea why the car was left locked in the car park until i politely told him it was left to see if it had a tracker fitted and his presence was enough for them to leave it as they where probably sat in the pub watching.
He had been sent by his control to sit with it,not very good in my opinion as they could have sat and watched from a distance for who went back to it.

No steering wheel, your car is going nowhere, you may think.
I used to live in an area where one rouge managed to get his hands on a sling equiped vehicle, which means where ever he fancied a car & it was more or less convenient to move, he'd be in there & no one would approach him. His main target area was the NEC car park, he had loads.
I'de still go with the zero steering wheel option.......

Get and Aftermarket ECU and remove the map to your laptop every night, imobilizer, tracker gearbox lock and a hidden hydraulic handbrake v/v should take them a while. Also chain it to a lampost for good measure.

I think the thing to do is to plant some decoy tracker bugs in the car - that way, the tracker will lead the police back to the next stage of the car theft. I'm going to ask my alarm fitter to put some decoys in.
however, saying that. anyone can find the tracker device pretty easily once it has been activated using a bit of kit that costs less than two packets of ****.
It always takes the theives a few years to catch up - but I do not see how Tracker are evolving.

The top of that page should read "what's missing from this web-site? - any sort of contact information, link, address or phone number"

Mine has a tracker but it's no longer active.
I don't want some sh#tcake nicking my car for a bank job, then Tracker recovering it for me, only to find it's had it bowels pulled out in a chase.
I'd rather lose the car and pay the excess.
BTW. I've had 3 attempted breakins at my house while I've owned 3 different scoobs!!
Is there a lesson for me to learn?
Sad but true.

Car thieves - kneecapping is a wonderful thing!
This thread is quite disturbing guys to say the least. Had an M3 before the new STI and some scumbag tried to have it away. I was woken and "suggested" he not tamper with the car "please".
After 2 weeks in casualty/hospital he came out and hasn't been seen since.
Anyway, I digress, what is the deal with the tracker? Like most of you I too have to have a tracker fitted before most insurance companies will even consider providing a quote never mind agreeing to insure the damn thing.
Are they all fitted differently or fitted in a random fashion, OR is the whole thing a load of bollox and as per usual the insurance companies are using it as an excuse to hike up the costs?
At this rate we'll have to start building nuclear bunkers to park the bloody things in at night.
