I was selling an old car, some guy comes along and takes a test drive. He was flooring it to see how it goes then commented on how lively the engine still was after 130thousand kms.

At the end of it, I asked him so you want it, he says "Red is not my colour"

The excuses some people use are class. I was selling a 1989 Merc 230E saloon for £1k. Guy came to see it, and said he just wanted a runaround for himself in Edinburgh as he was a contractor and went home at weekends to Bristol (flew home so didn't need the car for long distances). Just to emphasise, he just wanted a runaround for himself and remember this was a 1989 car for £1k....

So, he test drove it (quite a long distance), said he liked it a lot, but didn't want it as the nearside rear electric window didn't work. WTF!? He only wanted it for himself....said he wanted something which everything worked on. Oh well, you'll be lucky on a 1989 car for £1k!

I'd have rather he said that BEFORE he took me on a wasted 10 mile test drive!

I must be lucky then, I advertised mine for sale here and only here http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=296902 and had two people lined up within a week, one pulled out due to insurance quotes and the other made a good offer and picked it up a week later

SB, sympathise, am trying to sell my Mondeo, 2001 Y, tidy apart from a scuffed door but priced accordingly, I cannot beleive the ammount of Arseholes that have rung about it, 2 have said they were coming never to arrive, why not just say that they arent interested ?

A guy who works near Mr.Scoobypreza saw it for sale and got in touch.
He came to see it twice and had a drive. He said he loved it and said he'd take it.
I should have known it was too good to be true.
He said he just wanted to check on insurance and he'd get back to me next day. That was 10 days ago I've tried to ring him but he didn't answer and hasn't replied to my text.
Fair enough if he doesn't want it but at least he could say so.
Would have liked to have it sold before the baby gets here.
How does it work when you sell it to a dealer?? Do you just go there and they make an offer? I've never had to do that before.
Could do without it all now to be honest I'm 8months pregnant!! Not really what I thought I'd be doing!

I bought it because it was his wifes car primarily and I recall the first time I met him he told me she could get over 30mpg combined from a scooby. I figured it had had an easy 73k miles

Tried to sell my VW Lupo diesel. Posted on here, pistonheads and advertised on Autotrader. I just got agencies despite the ad saying 'NO AGENCIES'.

Ended up trading it in for another car. There was nothing wrong with the car I was just bored with it. Dealer sold it inside a week!!!!

People seem to think private sales are to be avoided and somehow a dealer offers some sort of security??? IMO.

well this is true.

you can sue a dealer if there's something wrong with the car that makes it not fit for purpose (sale of goods act).

buying privately you don't get this and it's sold as seen with the buyer taking 100% of the risk.

Have you seen how fast they clear a forecourt and move on? Nearly as quick as turning over cars themselves!

sale of goods act allows you to do this - the reason why you don't hear of dealers being sued is because they take the car back and refund - they HAVE to. they may put up a fight at first, but as soon as the sale of goods act is quoted, they cave.

as for moving on - yes - some dealers do this (the ones to avoid) - but others have been there for years (often family owned businesses). these are the ones id buy from.

let's put it this way - if you buy privately you have 0 chance of getting your money back if things go **** up. buying from a dealer gives you more chance, if not a total guarantee.
