I have nicked my husbands login to have my two peneth worth.
As an ambulance driver i can assure you that we do not intentionally force people off the road or up kerbs. If people had a little bit more forsight in general and didn't panic as soon as they here us coming we would get to calls with out causing to many problems.
At the end of the day we are only driving transit vans standard ones at that, they do not have uprated brakes, gear box etc but weigh at least 3.5 tonnes and certainlly don't run on nitrous as most of joe public seam to think they do. If in any doubt indicate left and STOP leaving us enough room. I'm sorry you kerbed your wheel but as the ambulance didn't actually hit you there is no proof of the incident.
Last point in Essex you have to do a three week driving course as part of your basic training.

With apologies to non-fire service readers I have to rise to this one:
"(in fact I've probably stood on a branch longer than you've been in the job!)"
I don't doubt it, I'm more likely to be inside doing it than outside watching others do it.
As London have been judged furthest ahead in the 'modernisation' process it's likely we'll get your beloved pay 'award' before you will, so it's not us holding it up is it?
"Take it from me mate they are no better than the average driver!! In the fire service we get no advanced driving instruction, so i would doubt that the am/service does!!"
There are, currently at least, 50 brigades other than your own, not doing advanced driving yourself isn't exactly confirmation that noone else does is it?
Not to mention that you say above that your Brigade now does EFADS, so what you said isn't even true.
What qualifies you to speculate on the Ambulance Service, about which it also appears you know very little as it seems your wrong about their driver training too?
"Well said Mrs Tim. If half the people driving on the roads today, drove with as much forsight as we do!"
Um, didn't you say originally that 'we' [sic] are no better than the average driver?
Surely what you meant is that YOU are no better than the average driver?
Famine, having been there myself I know that the trucks look like they're going blinking quick but trust me there's not a fire engine in London that could accelerate to 80 on the Fulham road without being dropped onto it from a great height!!
Joking aside, they do look like they're going quicker than they are, have a little faith, we are after all driving to arrive in a fit state to do something when we get there.
If you do feel that you've seen an emergency vehicle driving dangerously then you are well within your rights to complain. Emergency vehicles belong to the public in a roundabout way!

I can sympathise with the original poster but unfortunately you seem to have met a bad un, but as other people have said they might have been going to something slightly more urgent than normal, I teach A+E emergency driving and even I will admit that on certain jobs (kids mainly) you tend to be slightly less tolerant with ditherers of which we see a lot. This is still no excuse for pushing anyone into something they dont want to do, you can only "plant the seed of suggestion" by positioning the vehicle as to where you want them to go, it can be a fine line sometimes and it sounds like this time they crossed it. There has been a lot of fire service contribution and it wouldn't be right not to have a pop in the interest of inter service rivalry at their lack of training in what can be lethal machines with the momentum of the water they carry, I spoke to a "trainer" locally a few years ago who suggested that they thought they would offer to do our training until he actually found out what we did and then came over all quiet for some reason until he admitted that they do "2 days!" during which time they try and fit in some blue light work! Not nearly enough for such a highly funded service.
The accident statistics I saw a couple of years ago stated that mile for mile the ambulance service have a lower accident rate than police and fire services added together,

As I said in my original post I probably would'nt stand a chance of getting a wheel out of them and I'm not even gonna try, but as a couple of people have mentioned on here about the way some of them drive and I fully understand that we had to get out of the way but it was just the in the manner it happened, I myself know what it feels like to need an ambulance, when I was hit head on my a drunk driver at over 100mph and I nearly died, thanks to the skill of the paramedics, firemen and police I thankfully came out of it alive only just mind you, and thanks to the guys who have given good advice, but no thanks to the guys who just slag you off.

not sure if my license applies there but from my nderstanding RED LIGHT means stop IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO. and green means GO if it is SAFE to do so. note that the law implies strongly on the word SAFE.

its a shame to see replyies to posts like on this thread. Im a better driver than you culture.... I’ve been in the fire service longer than you so I should know better.... Gez, these are petulant replies you would expect on a Max Power forum with baseball caps as icons.
Colin asked a simple question and didn’t get too many courteous replies, if people want to start slagging each other off then move to the Fight Club!
As for Colins wheel, life sucks. £50 should get a full refurb. £50 is £50 I know but if a stone flicks up from the car in front and splits your windscreen you still have to get it repaired (ie £50 excess). Its a bummer I know but thats life. These things happen.
Hope you get you wheel sorted out soon Simon. And forget some of these earlier posts from certain people. Its really not worth rising to it.

Jaf,
I've never felt the need for any kind of rivalry with the Ambulance service, it's kind of hard to compete when you don't do the same things!! The emergency part of the driving course in London is 3 weeks long, so as with young misty you can't make a blanket criticism!
It's not that we're so well funded, it's that you are guys are so badly funded.
Any vehicle can be a lethal machine and most fire engines carry alot less water than you'd think.
"The accident statistics I saw a couple of years ago stated that mile for mile the ambulance service have a lower accident rate than police and fire services added together"
Well, that's not really a surprise, is it? Add two services together and it's not unlikely that they will be more than one service??

Next time do what I do.
I only move if there's enough space and I never rush just so that they can get there quicker.
If there's any chance of me either putting myslef or my car.......... soon to be a WR1 in trouble I then never move.......... let the cluckers hit you, then you can claim.
Looks like this time you should have done an emergency stop, then dragged the driver out............doing a quick Vinny Jones on his head and warn him/her about driving like a ****.
I find that anyone driving an emergency with blues going, amb, fire, police they all think that the rules of the roads don't come in to play, pigs are the worste.
I never move for the coppers, they don't like it but can't do anything about it, the rest by law, I only move if it's safe for my car, no curbs, ditches ect.
The most important thing to remember................................
YOUR BABY COMES FIRST

Yes Clive, people like you are the reason ambulance staff have to wear body armour. As someone who drives a Subaru it's safe to assume you flagrantly ignore the speed limit on a regular basis, so who is it that really thinks that the rules of the road don't come into play? Emergency vehicles are exempt from some of the rules that you aren't.
If you genuinely believe that your car is more important than people in trouble I'm amazed you have the mental capacity to get enough money to buy a WR1.

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr Ian, welcome to the real world............as if anyone with half a brain would do the Vinny Jones thing................ I bet you there's loads out there that think about it when they have been cut-up by either the sales rep or the blue's going off.
Show me a scooby driver that sticks to the speed limits and I'll show you a chocolate fire guard that works, what do you drive your sisters go faster scooter.....lol
Sounds like a pikie with cap in hand,,, what don't you have the £££££££££ for a WR1.
It's all depends on who the person, but why would anyone put themselves or their baby in trouble for anyone else........ Number one comes first, then when all is safe you can move on.
Could be saving another joy rider, drug dealer, ect,,,,,,,,, mind you it might be a big accident that has been caused by speeding police car chasing you on your sisters scooter.
If it was a Vet's car with the lights going............... Green.......... I would move everytime and try extra hard to get out of the way.
People like you think that we the people are the most important thing,,,,,,,,,,, sorry BOLLOX............ that attitude is so lame.... animals will be here long after you and me are gone... people are the cause of all/most of the problems that are out there.
What will be will be, what goes around comes around.
Animal burning = save
Human burning = to busy saving the animal that the idiot human set on fire.

Who is this to55er?
So next time your house gets burgled/is on fire/a relative is having a heart attack, you wont be whinging about the time it took them to get there.
If you deliberately obstruct them you could get done for careless and inconsiderate driving. I hope I meet you one day, coz I'll have great delight in booking you up.

before everyone.......... some of you start to cry like little baby's, Daz & Imsbman.
First, Daz,, if you don't think there's any karma out there, then your sadder than one would think with a very narrow mind, Birmingham.......... need I say anymore......... enough said....
Imsbman (what the *?_~* is that name) let me put it in children's terms for you................. you should not move out of the way if it's going to put you or the car your driving in any danger, you could end up causing more problems on the road.
I never said that I obstruct on purpose, can't you read......... obviously not English and your having problems understanding. That's ok there's child care out there for you.
I would expect nothing more from someone from your background to offer me a booking up.......???????????................ what kind of English is that.... prat !!!!
Conclusion::
Move, under your own steam to a safe position for other traffic users, yourself and your car. If you can't do that then don't move at all. They will find a way around and lets not to forget that they are trained to deal with situations like that.
No one, I mean one would expect anyone out there to smack their own car so the blues can get to the coffee and donuts first, fire and Ambulances we have a lot more consideration for.

Yes I can thanks, what the **** does
mean then?
Rule 194 of the Highway Code states:-
You should look and listen for ambulances, fire engines, police or other emergency vehicles using flashing blue, red or green lights, headlights or sirens. When one approaches do not panic. Consider the route of the emergency vehicle and take appropriate action to let it pass. If necessary, pull to the side of the road and stop, but do not endanger other road users.
Now, if you were as good a driver as you think you are, you would be looking out for these vehicles and be able to plan ahead in plenty of time, without the need to crash you car. No-one is asking you to dent your pride and joy, but a little bit of observation and planning would alleviate the need to do this.

I've kicked my husbands login again and find this attuitude of letting an emergency vehicle hit and you can claim complete BullSh*t. You would be endangering yourself and the crews of the vehicle. Don't forgot blame would still have to be estabilshed. So god help you if you ever need an emgerency service i.e if & when you stuff your beloved new car. Just remeber one day it could be you or one of your family that needs us. Also the attitute of abusing & assulting someone IS why we are being issued with stab vests. Which is a sad state of affairs when all we are trying to is help someone who is either hurt or unwell.

one assumes the ambulance drove into the path of oncoming traffic at the lights? so why didnt you....i doubt with a flashing van behind you ppl would have just ploughed into you? because they didnt plough into the ambulance did they?
