AP & Brembo 4 piston brake kits - prices
#31
Well Demon Tweeks sell their Impreza 304mm AP Racing kit for £1750!!!!!
There's no need for any hostility here, but I'm afraid where there's competition there will always be some degree of banter.
Pete has sold 1500 kits and I'm sure his customers are happy.
Mike is selling plenty of AP kits, and I'm sure his customers are all happy (I am! ).
Phil may well sell a few kits, and his customers may be happy.
That's all that counts.
It's a free market, but as long as people are making claims that other people are doubting (licences, lead time, etc) people will be wary.
Perhaps a complete spec list from Phil (caliper style, pads, etc) will help resolve the problem?
Anyway, for the sake of £25.....
Stef.

Having driven cars with both Brembo and AP fitted I would agree with Rob that there is nothing much in it and yes, I also found that the Brembo's have better initial bite but ... thats alot to do with pad choice IMHO. The AP's feel much more progressive as in more pressure more bite My AP's seemed to be taking a long time to bed in but I've been told that you are actually supposed to use them during the 200 mile period !! I am actually finding that I have to cadence brake ... long time since I had to do that on the road.
The AP Racing web site is worth a look ... lots of info on all the callipers, disks etc.

Stef,
Unless it was a typo, Pete stated he'd sold over 150 kits. I suspect that if he'd sold the 1500 kits you suggest, he'd be a lot closer to early retirement or buying an ex-works wrc car for the weekends!

(I would be pleased to hear I'm wrong and that it is 1500 kits...)

Rob,
Thanks a lot for the info. My one experience of the Prodrive/Alcon system was a few passenger laps of Knockhill with Mike Wood at the wheel in the Prodrive demo car last year....
The stopping power coming up to the hairpin certainly scared the s**t out of me
Basically, it seems that all of the options - Brembo, Prodrive or AP - are mighty impressive, and which one to choose is more personal choice than any distinct performance advantage?
Cheers
Alastair

Wheew...seemed to have got a bit heated... most unlike the BBS and new suppliers...BPM etc...
Seriously...I can see the uproar its caused with the two main suppliers of after-market Impreza bits. It may be the case that you have developed these kits and they are the dogs-danglies but why not encourage a little more competition, as sureley its better to prove your products maybee even in a back to back test.
Why doesent one of you donate a mule and fit all the kits on it and do some 'proper' tests as we all know the driver, pads, fluids, circuit conditions all make a difference.
Also, you forget guys that starting out in buisness is difficult. How the hell are you supposed to get a reputation (good ?) if as soon as you say we are doing x,y,z it gets shot down in flames without it even touching a car.
I'm not connected with any of you and I wish all of you the best but sometimes I think the 'red-mist' syndrome decends on the BBS('es ?) as well.
Oh well ! Just my 2ps worth

Basically, yes...
personal opinion is the deciding factor.
I said that the Brembos felt better initially. They are running on standard Brembo pads (cos they are fitted to my car!) and the Alcon set-up I tried was fitted with a harder material pad and the Brembos STILL felt better initially, but both the same after that.
Your choice should come down to who is the most believable and honest of the suppliers. All of the main suppliers out there have a reputation for quality service..
Other than that, for the sort of money that is required to buy these kits, they should ALL be F'in good!!!

Hi guys..
This will probably upset a lot of people... I always tend to do that...
I am not standing behind ANY company.. I do not sell or design brakes.. and I dont wish to.
I believe various companies have spent alot of time building brake kits for the scoob.
If you notice I said KITS.... I dont believe any company has paid/funded a brake supplier to design and manufacture new calipers or disks specifically for the scoob.
What I think has happened is that the suppliers have sat down with each manufacturer and combined off the shelf discs and calipers, had custom machined bells and caliper brackets and chosen set pads ... to form a kit.
Please tell me if I am wrong. Yes GGR do sell yellow brembo calipers.... But arent the black calipers the same as an Esprit type? the same goes for AP kit, if you go to an AP dealer, you can buy the caliper for the scoob. They probably wont know it fits a scoob, but if you give them a part number they should supply.
I am glad of extra suppliers, that can only mean good news for us (the consumer)... but I still value the hard work and time and research done by various companies.. and their knowledge gained during this time.
For ease and simplicity, I would just buying complete kits....
Has anyone compared part numbers/specs of the various kits.. I believe each disc is stamped... each caliper should have a model number?

I agree, which is why I suggested the no.s be compared. At least that way we can see whether the kits are really the same, or whether it's perhaps paying a bit extra for the specially developed kits.
I'm all for competition, but I feel if Phil (or anyone else) makes certain claims that people dispute, it won't help their quest to gain business.
I have AP's 'cos I was asked to test them, nobody else really mentioned the AP kit to me before then, so I may not have got them.
I have no issue on which kit is best. As some of you have said, once you get into the premier division, there all pretty much the same in terms of performance, and I guess they all have their individual strong/weak points.
What matters is that you are happy with whichever kit you've decided to buy, and the service you get when buying it.
Very true about pads as well. I am stunned at the difference that the 'Performance Friction' pads make when I tried them at Donno yesterday.....awesome. EBC can get stuffed as far as the track is concerned!!
