I would just like to send a big shout out to 50cent and the G Unit Crew. Them boys is phat and slaughter the likes of Hayes Squad and those other ***** groups Blazin Squad etc.

There is a huge amount of crap on the market at the moment. Hip Hop and Rap is very select. Used to hate it when I was younger, now I really like it. Ice Cube, Dre, NWA, Eminem, 50, D12 are superb.

Too much Will Young comercial crap at the mo. Hardly buy CD's now. Nothing of interest. Just buying old CD's I missed out on.

I was ready to post a thread up at 20.10, I'd had enough by then, Darkness getting band of the year and Busted covering Teenage Kicks, WTF was that, you don't cover a song like that especially when you have very little ability, the cover of Love Cats was pure dross, surely Robert Smith didnt agree to that.

Muse were the highlight for me, the usual excellant performance. three guys who can really play their instruments, by far the best live act there.

The Darkness were the Darkness.

Before the award for Best British Breakthrough act as voted for by radio 1 listeners came on I said to the missus I wonder what the age group is that listens to Radio 1 these days, 12-25 maybe, well when they announced Busted I had to change that to 6-16, I know the choice wasnt great but FFS!!

I think Le Bons voice has become stronger but sounds a little like Glitter !! "You validate us" LOL good luck to ya, it amuses me that everyone and his dog are like "Yeah Duran Duran, great band" when they were at their peak they were regularly slaughtered in the music press and the record buying public treated them as the Take That/Boyzone/Westlife et al of their day, now through some quirk of fate they are the band to go see and name drop, we used to go to Duran gigs at Hammersmith back in the day, purely because of all the Fangitta on offer, pixie boots and *****

As others have mentioned the British music industry is alive and well and the Brits is just a showcase for the big record companys to vote for their latest creations, the nominations said it all really.

My 2p's worth

Thaught it was the best slection of winners the Brits has ever had only busted and lemar made it from the crap pop list. Muse (the best band in the uk IMO) blew the stage up I thaught the arrangement of Kiss was fantastic helped along by Alicia Keys stunning voice though not sure what Gwen Stefani was doing there. You either get the darkness or not its comedy overblown ROCK and I think they are a great TV band but would never buy the album. The only problem the darkness had was Muse should have finished the night and there was know way the darkness could follow them.

"Darkness getting band of the year and Busted covering Teenage Kicks, WTF was that"

well their teenagers.....and very successfull popstars, you may not like it but any muppet can see why they sung it.

"you don't cover a song like that especially when you have very little ability"

lol- these kids have been playing in a band since kids, isnt that what everyone wants? ie. not made for TV.....and they have enough talent to be the one of the most succesfull groups in the country.....are you one of the best in the land at your job?

"the cover of Love Cats was pure dross, surely Robert Smith didnt agree to that."

i liked it

"Muse were the highlight for me, the usual excellant performance. three guys who can really play their instruments, by far the best live act there."

not my cup of tea, just a wall of loud noise, is there a tune in there?

T

ps- i think you'll find jamie cullum can also play a few notes...oh....but he's dross isnt it!

Fortunately I missed Busted ruining Teenage Kicks (surely they'd have been renaming it to Teenage ****** - more appropriate?), but I did wonder why I bothered watching the rest of the show at times.

The Love Cats rendition seemed good in relation to the rest of the dreadful performances on there, but compared to the original... rather poor.

Duran Duran, while we all liked to scoff at them during the Eighties, they've proved now that their tunes have stood the test of time, and that they have their own sound. Made the majority of the current acts look even more useless than they themselves had already achieved.

Muse were brilliant... The Darkness were on form too, though very much tongue-in-cheek as ever, one hopes they'll encourage talent spotters to turn their backs on the kareoke singers like Gareth Gates and co, and get some rock / metal acts back into the charts.

As for the "stars" of the moment... Jeez, what a load of crap. Beyonce - should be named Big-Poncey. Some young version of Tina Turner without the vocal ability, just shakes her ar$e about on stage to her only hit, with a troop of dancers, obviously chosen because they are heftier than Beyonce herself.

50 Cent - has to have some pathetic attempt at a Police escape scene shown before he jogs on to stage, to perform a (c)rap song that is a) unintelligible and b) blatently lacking in any form of music.

Oh well... at least Cat Deeley was on display...

Well i thought Jamie Cullum was excellent when doing Love Cats. And even better on the after show program on ITV2 as he was totally battered !!!!!!

Duran Duran were disappointing i thought.

And as for 50 Cent. LMFAO.

Of course *this* the the nub of the problem. When 'the people' are asked to vote for their favourite act all the little kids (girls) get active and send their text votes in and "hey presto" some pre-teen bull**** wins the poll. Trouble is, these little kids don't have any disposable income to go out and buy what they voted for. The next thing that happens is the record industry gets all upset because 'pop dross act X' sells no singles. Obviously no grown up is going to buy it.

Then excuses start..... "illegal downloading is the reason for falling sales" etc. When are they going to realise that their merchandise is rubbish aimed at an audience of small children, and that's why nobody buys it - nobody wants it.

No I dont. There is a lot of young talent about. Its just that I think acts like 50 cent are just more hype than talent.

I dont think Duran Duran were was aimed at 12-22 yr olds. In fact I expect most of this age group switched channels when they came on. My kids thought they were crap anyway. They thought it quite funny that we used to listen to them in "the old days".

im sure he's hyped all the way to the bank with the millions he's making.

fact is - plenty of people must think he is talented, or he wouldn't be where he is.

the biggest selling british band of the year with I think 2 million sales.
But that's nothing compared to, say, the early 70s. They were talking about Alvin Stardust (yea I know) the other day he sold 2 million copies of *one single* in just a couple of weeks

Makes you think....

Typical of society today. They were banned from "blacking up" in case it upset the ethnics.

Just becuse he's making millions(which he probaly isnt. His managers are though) doesnt mean he,s talented. After all look at things like The Bay City Rollers, Milli vanilli.

And Alvin Stardust.

50% ain't making millions. He's probably spending millions against his record company advance though. Gotta have that 'bling ting' after all.

sure it does. by definition if he's successful then he must be talented in some way, even if it's just "standing there and being marketable". you just don't see it and appreciate it.

just because you don't like something, doesn't mean that the person doing it isn't good at what they do. accept that it's not your kind of thing, but that millions of other people do like it and pay money to see it.

don't confuse your individual taste with an ability to talent spot.

the fact that 50 cent is there, selling records and topping the charts, means he must be talented, even if you don't like him.

No it doesnt mean he,s talented just because his bank balance is getting bigger. It does mean he's got a good team marketing him.

No different to advertising on the TV. People go out and buy whatever is rammed down their throats whether its good or not.

If someone is as you say "just standing there behind marketable" then where is the talent in that.

Take a few years ago we had Eddie the Eagle. Poor bloke was just pi$$ed on by the marketing people who made buckets of money out of him and then left him destitute. Didnt have any talent but was for sure a good tool to be marketed.

there is talent in being marketable. natural talent that not everyone has. simple as that. if it were easy, i'm sure you'd probably be doing it, raking in the money.

he might not be a world-class classically trained musician if that's what you're getting at, but that's not what he is trying to be - he's an entertainer. and he seems to be doing well at entertaining people. thus, he's a talented entertainer.

a & r guys don't just market anyone. they pick people with marketable talent, which 50 cent and the other people you've classed as "talentless" clearly have.
