olly - i don't think it's a contentious point. i don't think anyone would actually argue that it was better to smoke than not to smoke, it's just that the chavs are too weak willed to give up. there are lots of things that aren't illegal but are still detrimental to health and happiness.

I'm not saying it's right

It's the wrong thing to do in my opinion

As said earlier, if society and the law deem this action to be acceptable within the boundries of law, however damaging to the mothers health and the baby's health then we can't do anything about it.

We need to try and educate these mothers-to-be more

I personally agree with the first post made stating it looks awful seeing a pregnant mother smoke, I totally agree.

I was just trying to balance the issue a bit regarding the basic rights of freedom.

I have spoken to quite a few people who genuinely belive it would be MORE harmful for them to give up smoking having smoked for a number of years than to carry on. Yes that seems irrational to you and I, flat earth brigade as it were. But there are plenty of others out there who belive there is no God and that anybody who does belive must be mad. Some people will not accept, belive the evidence presented once they have made a decision on somethings. For others it is just pure ignorance.

women are not morrons..they know the risk- my wife smoked with our first two (has since quit) and they are fine....i also drive a bit fast when they are in the car, live a little!

theres some nonsense on here...if you are so passionate about helping little babys go to Africa and sort out the ones that drop dead all day long from hunger. or......dont and look after yourselves rather than worrying about others..theres better places to direct your worry if you have it in such surplus you can dish it out.

Tiggs - i'm not worrying about others. what they do is up to them. it doesn't hurt to have an opinion though, does it? of course many people will smoke and have healthy children. heroin addicts can also produce reasonably healthy children, although theymay have to be weaned off the drug after birth. i don't see what any of it has got to do with africa, though

Let them get on with it, if they want to risk problems with their child then that's fine by me. Same as all the parents I see smoking in the same room as their children or even worse the bloke I saw with his baby in a front carrying sling thing (have no idea what it's called and don't want to know) blowing his second hand smoke in the kids face. Nice people.

Speaking as an ex smoker, I am very pleased to say that I also find it a repulsive habit now since I never want to smoke again. It was hard to stop but thank goodness I did.

You have to face the facts, it is a very unhealthy pastime and does real and significant damage to your body. Its no good saying things that you like smoking and therefore intend to continue, that does not cancel out the serious effects both on you and the people around you. That tale told by the guy with heavy smokers as parents is horrific and revealing.

When pregnant, the baby is reliant on the mother for sustenance and if you smoke then the baby will be badly affected at the most vulnerable time of it's life. as a mother your first concern should be for your baby's welfare. No good people saying that they know of children from mothers who smoked and that they are alright. They will have a legacy for life from their mother's habit and it may well not show until later in life.

I think you should think more of your child than yourself and at least stop smoking during pregnancy. To hell with the stress, that is peanuts compared with bringing your child up anyway.

Hi,

I too am definitely in the no-smoking whilst pregnant camp. Someone earlier suggested that if someone thinks about it and then decides to carry on smoking whilst pregnant, then fine - it's their choice.
I honestly hope that this is not the case - how can anyone seriously sit down, think about it and then decide to continue smoking whilst pregnant !?!

It's selfish.....period.

My little lady is currently pregnant too, and I can't wait for the big day - and I'm massively glad my missus has never smoked.

Cheers

Matt

Default Ok, get this

It was reccomended by Catherine666's GP that giving up smoking while pregnant can actually have a significant adverse effect on the embryo due to the increased stress levels, lack of sleep, etc caused by giving up smoking.

Catherine was (IMO) a little rash to put the comments up above, as she bloody gave up! Its a bizarre hipocrisy people!

Smoking while pregnant is a choice, as was bringing the baby to the world in the first place. Its not your choice, so let people be.

Pregnant women who smoke are selfish (I think the same to those who also drink).

Why not give your baby the best start you can.

I think some women get pregnant unintentionally and so really don't think about it too much.

Default Non Smoker

Before I had my Ickle Muppet I use to smoke alot well you know 20 a day
but the day I found out I was pregnant I gave up just like that no help, just screwed the packet up and threw them away... that was the last packet i had.

Not fair to smoke while Pregnant, if these women do they are only thinking of them selves and there needs, not thinking of the child, very sad

Anyway thanks to my wonderful Ickle Muppet I dont smoke and never will again.

Me and my husband are thinking of having babies soon. We are both smokers, but we have decided to stop smoking one year before we start trying. And never start again.

It is not fair on the children, while you are pregnant and when they are born.

I do smoke intermittently but I make a point of never smoking in the house, car or anywhere my kids can see / smell or breathe it in.

I'm trying to give up and hope to have cracked it soon. I certainly dont want my kids finding a packet and trying one of mine - I would never forgive myself for giving them an additional opportunity to try it.

I will also never smoke if I'm with Jane (even outdoors) as 1) shes pregnant, and 2) she doesnt like it

Thats exactly what my mate said his wifes GP told her - what a load of cr@p, she could have gone on to use patches / gum whatever. Thats a cop out of the highest order IMO
