If they are pushing for compensation then that takes the pi$$ - I'd been feeling sorry for them until I read that. Also turns out they were earning £7 per hour which isnt a bad wage, especially as they obviously werent paying any tax on it.

Kat, I think the issue here is not what nationality they are, per se, but the fact that they are here illegally.

They could be black, white, yellow, blue, purple or green, it doesn't matter. If they were here legally, it wouldn't be so much of an issue.

Although to be honest, I have trouble defending people against their own stupidity in most of the cases that come to light. Not sure if this is one of them.... If they knew that the tide came in that quickly then why not make provision for it or leave earlier? If they didn't then it's very tragic but if they'd've been here legally, they would have had a lot more money and not needed to work for 23 and a half hours a day for £1 a week so wouldn't have been in that situation.

They will need luck, do you think the gangmasters would be receptive or threaten to have them killed and or do some serious damage to the "other slaves" as some form of retribution. But if they want to try, then fine.

That still doesn't make my point about the government seeking to recover costs from the families, as those who died had not paid taxes in this country to benefit from the services that risked their lives to try and save them, invalid or fu*ked up.

Look at other countries, if you are sick over there and don't have health insurance, expect a whopping great bill from the hospital. Why should we have to pander to everybody?

OllyK - if they are trying to get compensation "from the government" then it's a fair point, but i am curious as to how this would be achieved. i'm not aware of a provision for sueing "the govt" because a member of your family accidentally drowned.

Why should they get compensation? If they do get any, it should be put towards the North West air Ambulance which was used to fly the dead bodies to the the Infirmary imho. Why use the air ambulance, which is under threat of being lost to move dead bodies?

 

It would seem from the Gaurdian that they belive they ought to be able to sue the English guys who were taking them down to the beach on thier tractors, guess the English connection with the snakehead / triads or whatever.

OK, that's fair enough, I guess. But we still have the point that if they hadn't been here, which they shouldn't have been, then they would be alive. Bit like falling of a cliff that has lots of warning signs saying danger and do not enter and then trying to sue somebody for it. If you are somewhere that you shouldn't be and are comitting a crime, then if you shouldn't have any come back for the injuries caused. Think this should follow through so that burglers can't sue for getting seven bells kicked out of them if the owner of the house happens to waiting for them with a baseball bat.

The interesting point in the article is that they are interviewing a woman who was cockling a while back as an illegal and is currently working in a restaurant. Why the hell is she still here??

 

From what I can gleen with my limited intelligence, the persons family in question are trying to sue the 'gangmasters'. Ive not read or heard anything regarding sueing the government.

The cultivators/pickers get paid by the sack, the (illegal) workers get about £10-12/sack, the gangmasters get £15-16/sack off the local cockle traders.

Most of these Chinese workers have never even seen the sea, never mind being aware of its dangers.

I feel sorry for anyone who is so desperated for money, that they have to leave thier families and work in a foreign land doing a sh1tty dangerous job, with little or no training. And basically lining the pockets 'typically' of some other once illegal immigrant who has come good, and decided to exploit other people who are desperate, as he was once himself.

As usual, a chance comment gets amplified and thus further hysteria is created. Pretty soon people will be convincing each other that all asylum seekers (who all get a three-bedroom semi in rural Surrey) HAVE claimed compensation from the government.

The fact is that the illegals on the beach are unable to claim any compensation from the Government in any shape or form. Those that survived will in all probability be deported. They will not be able to claim from their gangmaster, as to contract for an illegal supply of illegal services is not something even remotely enforceable, even supposing that they had a contract in the first place.

If any of you want to jump up and down about how the nation is going to the dogs, first look at the subjects of the Wife Swap programme from a few months back. The illegals shouldn't be here, but they're quite prepared to work stupidly hard for pitifully small amounts of money - would that the indigenous population had the same work ethos.

We are almost all descended from immigrants in this country, and those that aren't (the Scots, Irish, Cornish, Welsh) are often derided as stupid and inbred. And those who complian the most then say that they want to emigrate and thus perpetuate the flow of economic migrants (which has, incidentally, been going on for pretty much man's entire history on this planet).

Because they are illegal they don't have the benefit of the nanny state coughing up dole money to them every week so they have little choice. But when you consider many paid £20K for a "better" life and manage to send about £1K or so a year back home, does this really justify them coming over? I don't think so, they would be better off with their families.

I know someone who worked here illegally as a student when she was in the UK. She's Turkish, so was easily able to get a job at £3.00 per hour cash-in-hand at (ironically enough) a Greek restaurant.

She did no harm to anyone, didn't claim benefits (wasn't entitled to anyway), made an extra £40 per week from working every Friday and Saturday night ... so where's the problem? They couldn't find anyone to do the the job, she filled a need, and much of what she earned was recycled through the economy one way or another.
