Hello Simon,

the reason i don't see the point is that such a system could be used for vendetta(harsh term, but i have a language barrier to cross ). How is such a system going to be vendetta-proof and used in the right way?

It does seem rather that if the individual's 'rating' thing is going to work, it's either not very useful or hideously complicated

Threads? Judging them by their usefulness/interest is good, but surely how interesting/useful they are depends heavily on who it is that is viewing them?

One thing that could reduce bandwidth & increase usefulness is some sort of FAQ... not too sure how it could work, though.

As an 'intro', I normally hang out in the techy areas & don't really go much anywhere else, just so you can see where I'm coming from...

There are frequently the same thing asked time & time again; sometimes these things are 'personal' (e.g. noise level of exhaust), but other times they are 'intelligent' questions that aren't easy to find the correct answer for. For example, the Dawes rage at its peak. The 'guru' on this stuff was John Banks, and all others did really was regurgitate (how hard is that one to spell? ) what he had done/said earlier. Hello FAQ, & some way of getting the info that it exists in the first place across, and also possibly providing an area for people to write them in? Or similar...

Dunno

As ever, once you start asking questions, ideas start flooding in & once what looked like a 'medium' project turns into a massive rebuild

The spirit of the web takes another battering, with yet more people trying to make money out of it!

A better beginning would be the wholesale migration of the bulletin board to a board that encourages free expression and isn't motivated by ££££'s

I think user ratings may be useful...

The thread by 'Jason' about how 'koni shocks' transformed his Cavalier into an Impreza beater being one of the highlights that could have earned him a 'could improve status' VERY rapidly!

Question

ScoobyNet3! - A new begining!!

Will there be a spellchecker for thread titles and posts? Not related to plus member status.

Webby,

I add my weight to the now-significant numbers who are uneasy about contributor rating. I'm not sure such gains as may be (and I don't really see any), are worth the effort, even if its CPU effort!. Personal VIP list+Ignore list functions would seem to me to suffice. Perhaps you might like to review this proposal since it's been picked up by so many posters, and is the only substantial concern being brought to bear?

Turning to "anti-community spirit", I counsel a fairly light hand, with disapproval being channelled principally to aggression or personal insults. "It takes all sorts to make a world" applies to SN as much to the community at large, IMHO. It's only criminals wot oughter get locked up - or in this case, have their posts deleted!!

Congratulations on a positive and constructive scheme of development.

Quite right. Come on guys, we want it all and we want it for FREE!

Free servers, free maintenance, free bandwith, free access, and preferably some free beer while we're at it.

(I trust SOME sarcasm is OK? :-) )

Ok, I'd like to address the comments from people who don't like the idea of the subscription thing. Umm, people, it's the NEW forums that will be charged for, not what already exists (ok, for sale is an exception here), unless I've read it totally wrong. So, in other words, we're getting SN as it is today, but with new BBS software, stricter moderation, and IF YOU WANT TO PAY, additional features. I don't have a problem with that.

There will be people who are still going to moan and whinge about how things are moderated, and about paying for things, etc.. well, as said before, if you really don't like it then put up or shut up, it's as simple as that.

I was considering whether to purchase a plus membership, I don't own a scoob anymore, and so it's mainly to use the new forums that I'm signing up and it might be a bit excessive just for that, but heck, I've been posting for four years on here, so I thought it was about time I chucked in a few pounds, If I could have given technical skills or such like I would have offered, but I'm not that smart, so I can't do that.
