Hi All

Taking everyone's suggestions in to account, we've come up with what we consider to be ideal structure for ScoobyNet3!! :)

We're working really hard behind the scenes getting all of this implimented, so apologies if replies are not instant.

Please post your thoughts, comments and suggestions, and thank you to everyone for such an incredible display of community spirit in the thread discussing these suggestions.

The Concept

A fresh start to ScoobyNet. Give more flexibility and features to the true supportive community members, and even more benefit to ScoobyNetPlus members. Provide an environment to reduce the burden on moderators and re-focus to provide more support to genuine community spirited members. Actively promote the supportive and community spirited nature of this community.

How?

Upgrade forum software to vBulletin.
Provide low cost subscription forums to increase the signal / noise ration for those that place importance on it.
Provide low cost additional forum features to improve the service for those that wish to use them.
Complete moderator procedure review (and ongoing), uncluding heavier moderation of anti-community spirited posts (to be defined).
In relevant subscription forums, allow thread starters to moderate their own threads in order to allow the removal of unwanted / disruptive posts.

Looking good :D

russell hayward 28 January 2004 02:44 PM

Sounds great !

Timescale ?

ex-webby 28 January 2004 02:47 PM

PS. Should make it clear that the above is EXTRA, rather than - in place of. The forums will still be available as they are (with the exception of the for sale forum), but the subscriber forums, etc will be added as extra.

All the best

Simon

ex-webby 28 January 2004 02:48 PM

timescale - realistic possibility next week, unless something goes wrong. :)

MadGrip 28 January 2004 02:51 PM

Phil

willy 28 January 2004 02:56 PM

I`ll second that, a group buy section like on MLR site.

SN3 seems a great way forward.

Willy

little_idiot 28 January 2004 02:58 PM

JohnMcC 28 January 2004 03:03 PM

Looks pretty good to me. :)

My only concern is this bit

"Reputation" system to allow members to incrementally vote to increase or decrease a member's "reputation" score.
Although I absolutely agree with it, I fear the ability to decrease a member's score will have to be closely watched otherwise it may lead to abuse?

Having said that, hopefully the full set of changes will weed out a lot of the less desirables in the first place.

Apologies if this point has been answered or approached elsewhere,

John

Prodrive Andy 28 January 2004 03:03 PM

Sounds very good to me... can we dump the muppet show section.
Group buy section sounds good also..

Andy...

Nathan L 28 January 2004 03:05 PM

All sounds spot on

Mr.Cookie 28 January 2004 03:06 PM

Looks good although i have same reservations as josh ref moderating own topics.

Also

-File Uploader (Attachments to posts)
-Can download attachments
Does this mean that if a plus member attaches a picture only other plus members can see them :)

Si
Ps can i have my ex mod plus member pack now lol :D

Andy Tang 28 January 2004 03:10 PM

Phil 28 January 2004 03:24 PM

Looking good

I'll reserve judgement on Self Moderation though can't quite get my head round that one

Looking forward to next week :D

Fatman 28 January 2004 03:31 PM

Sounds good Simon :). A few questions...
1/ Would SN+ members be able to delete replies from their own threads regardless of which forum that thread was started in (i.e. benign to effect of moving thread between forum)?
2/ I don't know what features the intended uploader has, so this may be a null question. But - some restrictions on the uploader may be desirable. For example, it could be manipulated to - say 'share' copyrighted music files, etc. Do you have details of this?
3/ Will it be possible to ignore particcular users?
4/ Are there proposed features relating to feedback of moderation? Or, is this to be tied to a moderator's user rating?

Wurzel 28 January 2004 03:33 PM

Can I have Super Muppet and Plus Member under my username (when you finally get my check) or are we only allowed one or the other?

Looking forward to seeing SN3 keep up the good work chaps.

Hanslow 28 January 2004 03:39 PM

Simon, Shaun, et al.

On the point of the reputation system, would it be possible to give reasons for the positive/negative rating that a user decides to give another user? A bit like the ebay stuff where you can at least give a reason for the feedback.

I can see, as mentioned previously, that if it's purely a click to increase/decrease then this could be open to abuse, possibly malicious, with no way of tracking how many times one person has increased or decreased a users rating and their reasons for doing so.

On the whole, looks like an interesting new proposition for the next generation of the BBS and a lot of work. I hope it all goes well for everyone concerned in the construction, migration and usage :)

jjones 28 January 2004 03:41 PM

why not use vbulletin in the first place?

Scooby-Doo 28 January 2004 03:51 PM

Looks Good, time to upgrade to plus then.

Within the for sale forums are we going to have :

Subaru Cars for sale
Subaru Parts for sale
Other cars for sale
Other car parts for sale
Non car related sales

I assume this will give enough scope to reduce BTT and be far more informative to people viewing.

Hope this helps

David

ex-webby 28 January 2004 03:52 PM

Hi Guys

Thanks for the GREAT feedback.

Reputation System
A member can increase another member's reputation by 1 point by clicking (will look in to "reasons"), and cannot affect that user's rating until they have rated another 40 members. This means it would be an absolute nightmare to abuse the system, and means that 1 person liking another person, will not be able to show them to be a huge star. We are investigating other restrictions like time until you can rate the same user as well.

Group Buy Section
Understood. We'll try to come up with a solution to this, but it may not be in time for launch as it has commercial complications attached to it.

Moderating Own Topics
Still open to final decision on this one. It will only be the thread starter, and all they can do is delete a post within it. Agreed, potentially open to abuse, but if abused, the feature will be removed for that member, or completely.
In for sale, this is vital IMHO as it will allow users to get rid of the irritating spoilers that have cropped up from time to time.
Plus members will not be able to moderate posts in non-subscriber forums.

Moderator Rating
Possibly with the standard user rating, but people have in the past (possibly not, now we're all focussed on a new start) been more willing to rate things as negative, than positive, so will need thinking about carefully, and will need the support of the people who think the moderators did a good job. Needs more planning, but feedback forum will allow usual discussion, if put forward in a constructive way.

Uploader
Only plus members will be able to upload / download attachments.. this is effectively to pay for the bandwidth. You can still post links, and use the IMG tag to insert images, etc.

Mr.Cookie - of course!! please sign up as normal and send shaun your member number rather than sending a cheque.

Ignore feature. Good point, this will be available to plus members.

SuperMuppet and PlusMember Tags. You can have both :)

All the best, and thank you once again for all the feedback and support.

Simon, and the team.

barge 28 January 2004 03:56 PM

only 100 posts needed for super muppetts !!!

most of that lot post more than that a day !!!

what ever hapened to the CD's for scoobynet ?

can the be purchased ?

kevin stanton 28 January 2004 04:01 PM

cool, super-muppit tag

:D

Mick 28 January 2004 04:12 PM

What about registration dates?

They were included in the user details a few years back but seem to be missing in the later members details?

Helps to know when high post count whether a long time Scooby enthusiast or Muppet poster when evaluating responses given! :D

How about free/ discounted Plus membership for those with more than... say 5 years membership ;)

Cheers

Mick :D

cw42 28 January 2004 04:14 PM

Plus membership sent off today.
nuff said.

"Give more flexibility and features to the true supportive community members"

True supportive community member = anyone willing to contribute to your coffers.

Still it's your site and you shall do what you want with it, but please don't try to cloak what is a blatant commercial venture as an altruistic and community-focussed relaunch.

Good luck

Suresh

Fatman 28 January 2004 04:22 PM

Re uploader: agreed, it makes sense that it's only available to SN+ members. But what sort of files may be uploaded? Graphic files, I assume. But what else? What is to stop someone renaming song.mp3 as song.jpg and uploading that for sharing? Or even, renaming VirusLadenSpreadsheet.xls as something else? Of course everyone could see who has uploaded it, but even with the best will in the world, it's possible to distribute malicious files unintentionally.

I presume that there will be specific T&Cs on use of the uploader, but I think you need some technical restrictions as well.
