Yep - I'd agree that it is dodgy to buy something with the primary purpose of impressing others or to attract attention. If you choose to aquire things for your own pleasure then good for you. An expensive watch could equally fall into either category, but isn't necessarily ostentatious of itself. The world would be a dull place if all decisions were based on utility or basic needs alone.

If someone has a flash car, watch or whatever but still lives with their parents (for example) they should probably review their life priorities.

I think that Rolex like Ferrari's seem to be classed as bad taste or for @unts with to much cash etc. but IMO i think 99% of the people on this board would have either if they had the chance!
Well I'm not an aunt but I could buy a bunch of Rolexes if I wanted (or a few Ferraris) but I don't. They are nasty, tacky things worn by insecure people. I imagine they get admiring comments at golf clubs, mock Tudor housing estates and other 'executive' hangouts LOL

I seldom wear a watch but when I do it's one of two Seikos - one of which is 14 years old - both going strong.

How can you stereotype everyone with a Rolex as insecure? What self-evident nonsense. What if you own a cheap Seiko and a Rolex for example - are you then suffering from multiple personality disorder by your logic?

As for the watches I've owned here's the verdicts:

Casio LED, 1977-79 very good, cool, but unreliable in the rough and tumble of the School playground.

Swatch late 80's - boring, plastic uncomfortable.

Accurist 91-94 - silvered coating wore off to reveal nasty yellowed alloy underneath, yeuch

Breitling Colt Superocean mid 90's, bezel jammed x2, strap lugs bent and fell apart, winder fell out and needed reapiring. Very disappointing.

Rolex Sea Dweller late 90's - now: rock solid build quality, reliable, rare, sporting but elegant, reccommended.

Leave the amateur psychiatry for the bar room please.

Nope. That person's insecure. They dropped $5K on a bauble to wear, and that overrides any other sensible watch purchases.

To borrow a local expression - all hat, no cattle.

Previous posters are right, follow an Rolex wearer home see what tacky tract home they're mortgaged up to the eyeballs on

Nasty, nasty things.

To answer the question though it's supply and demand. Rolex deliberately limit the supply of new watches to the market in order to retain 'brand value'. Waiting lists for some new sports models (like the stainless daytona) approach 10 years...so people pay a premium for immediate delivery.
Thats what i dont get.
Its complete bol10cks the above stamement.
My local authorised Rolex dealer has a Daytona,a sub and an explorer 2 for sale, brand new and list price. There is this myth about waiting lists which pushes up the price of used pieces, great for Rolex, but not very accurate.

So if they are readily available(with a bit of effort) why would anyone pay MORE for a s/h one than a new one?.........

Doesn't say much about the intelligence of potential Rolex owners.

I think if someone wants to spend a lot of money on a watch then that's their business. Don't we all need to stop judging each other? If someone has an expensive watch or a cheap watch, who really cares? You can't start making assumptions about their lives and whether they live here, or whether they live there. And really, does it matter?

If someone chooses to buy a £5k watch, why is that stupid? Yes, it's a lot of money 'just for a watch', but they might earn that much in a day - who knows?

Opinions on this and that are flying about everywhere, and don't you just get tired of it?!

These are all my opinion of course, and do you give a damn about it?! I hope not.

What if you bought your Rolex only because you like James Bond (is that then tacky and insecure) LOL
Im sorry about the Seiko comments to all you fans out there.
just an observation but the people who find Rolex a bit OTT and tacky seem to be trying very, if not to hard to push their point across. boolacks to you, each to there own

each to their own indeed- don't try to hide from other people's opinions though or diminish them. I'm ecstatic that someone likes the image of Rolex's, personally I think they have negative as well as positive connotations. Much like a BMW.

Yes, hopefully it is. Dropping $5K on watch to wave around* while you're busy paying mortgages and car loans by suckling on the corporate teat is really insecure and nasty. Yuck.

Now, if you're buying tacky baubles after you retired in your 30s and won't ever need to earn another penny in your life then more power to you. Swing in your hammock and admire your watch. But I doubt that applies, eh

All hat, no cattle.

(* do you have a $5K clock at home? I wonder if Rolex made wallclocks - that couldn't be waved about in public so easily - how many they'd sell?).

my god...what a load of crap in this thread!

all you £60 watch wearers.....do you have ppl that cant afford more tha £5 on a watch calling you names because of your excess?

everyone has a budget based on their own circumstances which will include their attitude to the item (eg. i have a budget of £0 for an aftermarket exhaust.....that budgets not based on my wealth- its based on my desire for that item)

my budget for a watch is £1,000...so i wear an Omega. my budget doesnt stretch to a £10k Rolex (again- my budget doesnt consider only my £, i could pay £10k for a watch but regard it as excessive)

This has turned a bit t1ts up hasnt it?

I must be seriously insecure according to the people in the know on here.

Here is how bad Ive got it.

If Im wearing a nice watch (which is most of the time) and Im going to the pub or a function. I will not wear a jacket, or a jumper, or a long sleave shirt. It must be a 'T' shirt or short sleaved shirt so everyone can see my watch. So I am that insecure, self indulgent, attention seeker that your talking about.
When I talk to people I will fiddle with my watch, and wave it about to try and draw attention to it. If that fails I will pass comment on other peoples watches, so I can turn the conversation around to mine. Then 'educate' the victim on the finer points of watch wearing.

Do you think it would be OK to go out with a watch on each wrist, or is that going too far.
Or maybe wear them as ear rings.

If you believe any of that your extreemly guillable, or you actually want to believe it....I would guess 60% of people in this thread would love to believe it.

I like watches, I can find enjoyment from wearing a cheap Poljot, as much as an expensive Rolex, Breitling, Omega or whatever.

Agh well, Im off to the pub. Now where did I put that tank top.....

If you go sea fishing like I do, the moon phase facility is very useful because I can work out whether tides are springs or neaps.

Unhappy

I can't understand the way this thread has gone!

How can the likes of Gareth Start calling people who wear a Rolex (or other fine watches) Insecure and mortgage upto the hilt? Well yes i have a mortgage and a Rolex and i also work very hard to pay for the things i like, does this make me insecure? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!! Should i give up on the idea of owning a nice car or house because of the image of these things, WHAT IMAGE??????? The image of a bloke who works hard and couldn't give a toss of what people thought? Yoza got it right with his "i go down the pub in a t-shirt..." comment!

If Gareth can afford "a few Ferraris" but does'nt buy them because of image, then i feel sorry for him because for one; he's missing the drive of his life and for two; he must have issues about image himself?!?!

Anyway what is it about Rolex again???

I got lost after about page 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don't give a toss about what people think why are you getting so wound up about a few comments on a BBS? Why feel the need to justify yourself like that? Perhaps becuase there is a grain of truth in some of the comments.

It's quite reasonable to say that some people may perceive Rolex wearers to be tossers, in a similar way to the perception many people have of Ferrari and Porsche drivers. They may well be wrong in drawing that conclusion but there are always going to be snap judgements made.

Personally I wouldn't own a Rolex because I don't like their styling, image or the perceived demographic of the average wearer. If I liked their watches then perhaps I'd have one and I wouldn't give a toss what anyone thought about me for wearing one. Certainly wouldn't get my knickers in a twist on a BBS in any case.

Rolexes do tend to stir up a lot of emotion. There are *far* better watches on the market in terms of timekeeping, which therefore infers most people who buy one do so in order to be noticed, as in styling terms you can buy almost identical watches for a fraction of the price.

When i bought mine, it was certainly important to me at the time to know that people would realise what it was. Over time, however, i've worn it less and less, as i'm conscious that whenever i see one, i'm usually saying to myself "I bet that's a fake", which is a shame for the brand. I enjoy wearing it occasionally.

I'd also agree with the comments about Seiko. Of the watches i own, my Seiko Chronograph is the most accurate of the lot, and has never needed anything more than a battery replacement.

Hi Narco, im not miffed but i find it funny that people (like myself) who drive cars that stand out (Scooby's, Evo's etc.) can justify there image but anything else like watches etc. get the hump!

Nowt funny as folk! LOL!

It seems most folk on this BBS aren't Subaru or even Evo drivers in any case. You have to remeber also that there are some Subaru models that are very restrained and don't stand out at all.

Also have to agree with the comments re Seiko, my divers watch is over 10 yrs old works perfectly and other than the gross styling is an excellent watch.
