Thumbs up

My mate got 9.5k on a trade in around 3 months ago on his my00 (55+k on the clock) from a main dealer (part ex'd for a new MY03 wrx though).
Worth looking at 8k+ with the mileage.

Tony

In Oct 2003, I traded my MY00 saloon 36k on clock in against a 6 month old STI 8 PPP.

The STI 8 PPP was £3,000 off list price and I got £12k for mine.

Obviously the dealer had margins in the STI 8 to give me the £12k on paper, but not to the tune of £4k surely?

Even if we assume that the dealer had a margin of £2k on the STI 8, it'd still mean I got £10k for mine!

Yebbut that had 36K on the clock - very different from 77K.

Dealers aren't charities. They'll buy as cheap as they can and sell as high as they can. As, presumably, would most of you lot. If you don't like a dealer's profit margin, go to another one, buy/sell privately, or even better - start your own dealership and do better deals for the rest of us!

Scoobies had low depreciation when they were highly specialist cars. The more common they get, the more their depreciation gets similar to any other car.

As somebody else said dealers are in it to make money - you also have to remember that they need to have enough margin to cover whatever warranty they offer you. If you buy from a dealer and theres a problem you'll be straight back to them - buy privately and its sold as seen.

I got £8,000 in December part-ex for my Y reg WRX 4 door with 61,000 miles on the clock. Thought it was on the low side but think I got a good deal on the new one, which is on contract hire.

Monthly charge for contract hire is the same as the car loan on the old one. The difference being that under the contract I am committedto 2 years not another 3!

Trade in figures are pretty meaningless unless you know how much the dealer wanted to shift what you are trading in against.
Unmodified low mileage cars are the only ones that will shift for decent money. I just paid silly money for a MY00 with 20k on the clock but I'm happy with what I have. While we know that these cars will do high mileages, we also know that they start to get pretty damn expensive at around the 90k mark.

To all those who think that high mileage cars are undervalued, how much would you pay for them if you had to sell on at a profit immediately?

main dealers will try and give you as little for your car as they can get away with...that's their job. You've got to stand your ground with them and try and get a reasonable deal..you'll never get a bargain from a main dealer...fact!!

There is no way that a MY00 is worth as little as £8k surely
Tony Burns recently sold his for £11,995 admittedly it had 30,000 miles and a PPP but that is the price I would expect to see them advertised at.
Fvckinghell, £8k, I'm speechless.

Different dealer but my mate was offered £6k from a dealer for his 9 month old Ford Focus MP3. Either the car had lost over £6k in 9 months or yet another dealer was having a larf!

Sell it private and you're sure to get what you want for it.

It's all down to the mileage if the linked 'what car' site is anything to go by.
As my MY00 with 22K on the clock came back with :

Dealer - £12,700
Private - £12,600

Not bad as I paid £11,900 for it 11 months ago (Private)

Cool

Have owned a few RS Fiesta's in the past the book price (that dealers tend to use) and the actual market value (what people are willing to pay) can be competly different. One of my cars sold for £7,000 although book value was £2500.

This was the same for all of them - the fact the car "should" be worth £2500 due to age etc is really meaningless if people are willing to pay more.

Impreza prices seem to have dropped quite a lot in the last year.
I sold my Dutch sourced Impreza Turbo 2000(X) with 35K miles in April 2003 for £11,900. According to glass's guide it's now worth less than £10,000.

Glass's give the following for a 2000(W) Impreza turbo with 77K miles:

Average condition: £6659
Excellent condition: £7500
Dealer retail: £10080

So I guess if the car is in excellent condition you should get between £7500-8000 in a private sale.

However if you want to sel it for £6000 let me know.

Raj

Just got rid of my EU import October 2001 bugeye to the trade for £11,200. I had varying replies from dealers ranging from "NO!" to "hmmm, well, they are worth £2k less than UK cars you know.." etc etc..

It had 19k miles and fsh as you'd expect. I was happy with what I got, it was what I needed to get, and I had none of the "can I come and see it next week" brigade to mess me about. Took 15 minutes going through Yellow Pages to all but sell it over the phone. As long as you are realistic about your price you shouldn't have any bother selling it on.

It's also about having the luxury of the time to wait for the right buyer. I didn't have that time, if you do then you may have to wait months but eventually someone who wants it will find buy it.
