Thumbs up

Hello y'all,

I will still b coming up but not in the Scoob as white van man has wrecked it at the rear (see my other post).

The run cost the last time was £35, which I believe was half price?

Alan

I have a radiator but need that pressure tested as well.

The leak I have in mine is a small crack that sprays coolant everywhere under load.

Don't think that will look to good on the rollers!!

Also want to try that FCD Dougie gave me ages ago. That's why I bought knocklink and was asking you about blow by oil as my IC pipes are getting caked in the stuff. (I could certainly do with a hand there!! )

Just waiting for my friends at Hyndland Honda to fit me in.

The only 2 problems at Star are the erratic at the wheel figures, and the cooling
Er... the wheel figure is the accurate one ! It is the calculated flywheel figure that is subject to inaccuracy on a rolling road.

If there's erratic wheel figures, i would say that's down to the car having fecked wheels, buckled most likely.

For the Knocklink, all you need is an ign +ve and -ve for the unit and run the two sensor wires through the bulkhead to the usual spot that the sensor is fitted to.

Cheers Alan,

I am aware the fitting of a knocklink is relatively easy but I have trouble with wiper blades!!

It is the fitting of the pipe work to get rid of the unwanted oil that gives me greater concern.
I cleaned the Dawes today and even after a short run to set it again the oil was blowing through it.

As for the FCD, Dougie doesn't even know if it works.

Cheers

Another thread apart from this one is necessary but briefly you need to find out where the oil is coming from, cylinder heads? crankcase? and divert this to a separate tank.
Once that's done blank off the pipes feeding back to the inlet pipe.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but having seen well over a hundred runs at Star the only figure that constantly makes sense is the fly one. I know I'm not the only person who feels this. I can't explain why, but it seems a combination of strange at the wheel figures and drivetrain losses equate to accurate fly figures.

Example: My old Impreza (218bhp according to Subaru, and it spent a while with them after its first time at Star)

1st run - 2k miles on engine (SUL): fly 204bhp, wheels 133bhp
2nd run - 14k miles on engine (SUL & NF): fly 218bhp, wheels 123bhp

The car was noticeably quicker on the road (consistently an extra 2mph on my normal acceleration run from roundabout to marking point 30-108 became 30-110) when the second run was done.

If required I'm sure I could get a stack of similar varying at the wheel figures with relatively consistent fly figures from guys on the SXOC as we had a similar discussion after their RR day at Star last year.

Using the ATW figures my RX-7 would have been the least powerful (properly running) jap import in the UK when it recorded 214@wheels last November, bit strange given it had proved to be otherwise on track only a month or so previously (which I'd hope given the money that has been thrown at it).
As a side note the car made 250@wheels at Dastek, running exactly the same setup.

I've nothing against Star, and I do regard their fly figures at accurate but I've seen too many inconsistencies (ie at 6770rpm on one run 129mph on another it's 6550 at 129mph and I suspect it's not wheel spin at that speed) outwith peak fly figures. I will be back there once the cooling on my car sorted out to try for my Star 350bhp fly target.

Cool

Ok, just signing on to let all know i'm still good to run. Provided the car starts fine this morning after being laid up ouside in the freezing cold for the past 19 days!

I'd be up for meeting at the Caird Park Shell in Dundee as i'm rather unfamiliar with the route to Star although i'm sure i could find my way there if needs be.

Pete,
Im going to bring the Skyline, as the P1 needs some brake attention (cracked disk). Does it make sense to put me at the end of the scoobs to avoid any un-necessary adjustments. Sorry to mess you around mate, but I don't facny driving through there with dodgy brakes !
I'll call you later if you don't post up here, as I'm working at the mo.
Cheers
Dave

thanks for the info pete.

for that price do we get boost and fuelling plotted?

I will not be there until noon but it might be worth asking jim, if rather than strap the cars down , turn on the fans and go straight into a run , he puts the car in the test gear and holds the car at about 3500rpm for 30secs to drop the inlet manifold temp. I am not sure if jim has started doing this but this seemed to really help control det at another rolling road. before this cooling run the inlet manifold was hot to the touch, after the cooling run it was warm. we could not measure intakes more accurately as the meter was getting used to measure egt's.

this should hopefully help to stop the cars cooking on the rollers and detting during the power run, especially the top mount cars which we have occasionally seen the run aborted.

He did this for me after I asked when we were there a couple of weeks back, although it was probably about 2-3minutes he held the rpm for (think it was around 2k he used) in order to get my temp down to a sensible level (took it from 65 degrees down to 38 before the run).

what rpm and for how long did dastek cool your car for?.

john banks, can you remember the revs and for how long dastek, held the car to cool before the run?, I was not in the car so was just guessing the revs but do not think it was more than a minute.

Think is was about 4000 RPM for a fast cruise. As we find before road dyno testing this gets the EGTs nice and warm for good realistic turbo spool up but gets enough air through the inlet manifold and intercooler to cool it down, as well as getting the transmission oil to a nice temperature and getting the coolant temperatures down.

Looks like the Scoobs will be done by 14.15 now with the cancellations and if kart_man moves to the non-scoobs section because of the Skyline wheelbase? T-uk & I will come earlier than the posted times to allow flexibility. 12:00 would certainly suit me a lot more than 13:45 with other commitments.

Remember folks in order to stick to the timetable and for it to go as clockwork all runners cars need to be ready to roll at the designated time.
Otherwise they miss their slot & have to settle for being slotted in later.

It was slightly less; about 2 mins, but at a higher rpm (around 3k I think). I had the laptop hooked up so we just monitored temps until they were acceptable before starting the run. Worth bearing in mind that an RX-7 intercooler is worse than a stock scoob top mount, cleverly located ontop of the radiator it heatsoaks for fun as soon as the car is stationary.

Wish todays uprated intercooler installation had gone to plan so I could have come along, but instead I have more of my engine bay in my living room than in the car hopefully I'll get it back together tomorrow.
