jye - i would, but i don't think that the great and the good would want to sully their horses hooves in walthamstow. they'd probably have their hub-caps nicked!

Its true that the fox is a vicious killer who hunts not only for food but will kill anything it catches regardless. It can also carry rabies which is a particularly unpleasant illness. I don't think it deserves special treatment.
I think Scoobynutta 555 and Mart 260 have got it right. And as many have said, there are far greater priorities than banning foxhunting. There is also no justification for inverted snobbery in this discussion.

You should never justify killing anything unless you would do it yourself. Do you own a gun Les? Im sure you can help out here. And yes I own a gun. And yes I have killed what I eat and would do so regularly if supermarkets did not exist/they sold rabbits/I could afford to buy and store whole cows and sheep

Foxes dont taste nice (although I can only go by third hand info on this one), not unless your a hound anyway or you like splashing foxes blood on children's/newbies faces.

thought so. So if the number killed is insignificant in terms of general fox population, why dont the fox hunt brigade just be honest and say they do this for the sport and then justify that?

I agree John it is for sport. They should come out and admit it though instead of saying they are controlling the fox population.
I think its got out of all proportion now as well. Labour only said they'd ban it as they assumed that most of the electorate wanted it banned. They were then shocked to see such public support behind the hunting fraternity so then changed their tune and have just muddled around for the last few years hoping it will fade away which of course it has'nt.
In the best interests of the country I say leave things as they are and concentrate on the more important issues like health , education and crime.
Chip.

I like the reference to the number killed on the roads. It puts it into perspective.
It really comes down to the cruelty issue. Has anyone ever killed a spider, sprayed a wasp with insect spray etc etc?
If a fox was green, slimey and smelled of poo would you be so keen to protect it? don't think so. It's just coz it's cute and cuddly and has a 30 year old muppet as an idol (basil brush, not me) ;-)
I used to go fishing, purely for sport, and when I removed the hook I would sometimes accidentally remove it's internal organs. I felt bad about that, but it wasn't illegal and generally angling is not seen as a blood sport, but more fish are killed in the name of sport than any other animal (totaly fabricated statement, lol)
I used to be against the Fox hunt, but I realised it was just coz Fox's were furry
I've grown up now and see the bigger picture ;-)

I didn't intend this to degenerate into a towny versus country issue.
I just think that the hunt is a marvellous image of British history, one this country should cherish. I have never hunted, but wouldn't want to stop others from enjoying it.
Live and let live

I see that once again Tony Blair was too busy to vote on the Fox Hunting issue. On the fence again I think!

The sad thing is that Poor Guy's not a million miles away from the truth!

Alcazar,
not sure what your statement means,
"not all dogs are rabid.. just innoculated"
thats a fair comment,,, but what about cats? rabbits? badgers? cows?
rabies affects all warm blooded mammals.
The Uk operates a six month quarentine system for any animal that enters without a pet passport.
Given that foxes are now well into urban arreas, ther would be significant problems on control should an incident occur.
The point i was trying to raise was that for all the "hunt" posturing that goes on both for and against,,
it would be a case of any method should a rabies outbreak occur
