I dunno Goochie... I was in the same boat.

I bought a 1969 Lightweight Land Rover (registered 1976) which had last been taxed in 1989!!

I put the V5 in my name and did nothing else. It was only after reading up on it I found this:

"If you buy a vehicle where the Road fund expired before the SORN became enforced, your are required to declare the vehicle as SORN upon the change of ownership" You will still get fined if the it is a historic vehicle (i.e free tax)

I didn't do the above! And I owned the vehicle for a about 12months before taxing it too I though I'd be screwed when I came to tax it. But I taxed it, and heared nothing. I then changed the registration plate (1976) to the date of Manufacture (1969). And also had the vehicle declared a Historic vehicle and thus free tax. And nothing ever showed up.

So, I would delcare it SORN. I may have been lucky as they were not strictly enforcing the rules when I did it. But it appears they are clamping down

WHy cant they make it that they assume the vehicle is off the road then fine you when they catch you with no tax?.............. oh yea they do that, but it takes more effort

Ohh bu55er! Tax on Scoob ran out in Dec, thought I'd tax it in Jan and 'save' a month from the fleecers. It has been locked up in the garage since late Nov and we HAVE been using the other (taxed) vehicle.

Can I now just stroll into the post office and get tax for it with no bother as I was always going to?

Write and tell them you sent it. The DVLA has the worst record of all government agencies for losing documents. If it goes to court ask them to disclose all known and reported losses, runs into thousands.

When you declare SORN are you supposed to get something back from the DVLA? as I sent a form off in late Oct and have had nowt through the post..

I sent my SORN request off in November and chased the DVLA as I'd had nothing back and was toold I coul dchase by phone but should wait 6 weeks !!

Needless to say I've kept the email so i can prove I've chased this.

I've a feeling I'm going to get in to trouble for my track day project that is currently off the road.

I think everyone in this thread has made the mistake of registering their cars in their own name. Apparently and from various sources, cars with no registered keeper are fairly commonplace. Not only are drivers of these saving money on insurance and tax, they're also not being hassled for silly fines that cost the genuine motorist money. Annoying to say the least.

And yes, I know its a bit of paper but do we not have bigger issues for this country to deal with?

A 'friend' of mine worked for the DVLA at one point. He said SORNS were sent out in batches and if the person did not send in a cheque for not delaring it, there was bugger all they could do about it. They used to drop it, none ever went to court.

This was over a year ago, so things may have changed.

Ok just about to SORN my bike which has been off the road since April - if I complete the V890 and state that the SORN needs to commence from 1May03 will I trigger them sending me a letter about my bike too?

Awaiting MOT on the bike so taxing it now isnt a sensible option hence the SORN???

I phoned today to find out if the car is already SORN'd but all 220 lines were busy for the hour in which I had spare! FFS - I'm trying!
